    Tell me about it, i speak basic spanish (enough to communicate) and everytime i travelled with my mom to her homeland when I was a kid some of her relatives who can't speak a word in english always would taunt my way of speaking spanish (and her way of speaking english) and would scold me into learning more spanish because "those are my roots, my **real** mother tongue", to not get too "snobby and self-absorbed" because I spoke a different language than theirs and that i wasn't being "patriotic" to my "homeland" just because I wasn't born and raised where my mom was, as if it was my fault that she decided to study overseas and later settle there to live far from her toxic family waaaaaaay before I was even born (and on top of that, her seniors would also call her out for that, that she was a "sellout for getting another citizenship" and a "golddigger for marrying a gringo" even though she graduated and worked her back out to have the nice lifestyle she rightfully deserves and my dad is literally 4 years older than her 😪 now i get why he never travelled with us) Sorry if I bored you with my story, i felt like venting a little

  • @jwo122

    @jwo122

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@imenkhichi1927 no even amongst friends if there's an age difference you use honorifics but use casual language and not formal. There maybe the rare exceptions but in most part we use honorifics. In the case of these two sisters they adopted a more western way of thinking but even so they are expected to use honorifics in front of other Koreans. When they are by themselves or with other westernized Korean it's whatever feels comfortable but it all depends on the time and place. When Korean friends the same age call for one another they used terms like yah 야 (equivalent to hey) which is considered very rude and inappropriate when used against someone older. So a more appropriate term would would be hyung 형, noona 누나, oppa 오빠, and unni 언니. And calling them by their name is a definite no no. This concept might seem complicated for people unfamiliar with the Korean language and culture but it's really not. For Koreans it's taught from the moment you're able to put together sentences. It's just how it is just like using Mr. or Mrs. in English.

    my friend’s younger sister calls her both by her name and unnie, usually depending on what language she’s speaking. it’s also out of habit, like showing respect may be part of the culture but you can’t always be perfect if you grew up using their name or using it interchangeably with unnie.

    Yeah exactly. Especially since they grew up and were born in the US before they moved to korea. So they are used to the american way of talking to each other.

    i’m from a southeast asian country but i feel the same (albeit it’s definitely not as enforced compared to SK). i grew up in the US as a kid and speak english, so my little sister calls me by my first name or dumb nicknames, while most of my friends are usually a bit more polite and use honorifics with their siblings lol

    I'm always amazed to see different culture around the world. Some cultures remain the same for centuries. On the other hand some changes over time. Nowadays in south Asia, it's not a big deal if you call your own siblings by their name. Majority of us use the informal words. My younger sister is three years younger than me and uses the informal "you". Same goes with cousins. We even call someone we are close with even if we are not blood related with the informal "you". But it was different in our previous generation. It used to be like older siblings having the same respect as parents. They are still respected but the type has changed. Idk how to explain smh

    I’d teach my kids to call the older sibling(s) my language’s equivalent of the unnie/noona/hyung/oppa, but when they are older and they want to call them by their first names, then whatevs. I mean, as long as the older siblings are ok with it. Cultures and traditions are good but srsly dont be too extreme 😂😂

    Same here, among my siblings we address our self by name. People surrounding us surprised and found it rude. Depend on what culture and how you brought up but nahhhh, does not apply in our family.
