The performance is wonderful but it's the video's coda, that moment of insight into the process of learning a piece of music that is perhaps the most poignant moment. The moment of laughter that reveals the spirit of dedicated musicianship; the spirit one must embrace, not of frustration, but the joy of knowing one will indeed master the moment as one has always done before. “Saltarello” was worth all the trouble, MD! I have loved that piece in one form or another since my young teens, and I wanted to go back to the original version and craft my own arrangement for mountain dulcimer. :-) Thank you for following the journey...

Yes, “Saltarello” is a song that stuck around for me, too! My cousins and I used to dance to it when we were younger... Hence, I felt that I needed to create my own arrangement! :-)

The version of DCD is very good but it is a traditionnal italian dance from the end of middel age / rennaissance Christopher. A saltarelle or a saltarello is a dance like a andro or hanterdro or polka or mazurka or bransle or bourée. ;-)

Well done, Jessica. A few years ago a friend gifted a mountain dulcimer to me and I was amazed at how quickly I was able to make music on an instrument I knew nothing about. It seems that the dulcimer lends itself very well to the style of music you are playing. This is the second of your videos that I've viewed and have thoroughly enjoyed both. I'm about to explore your others. I also noticed the very first capo on a dulcimer that I've ever seen. (shows I don't get out much)

Love this piece and you played it beautifully. I play it on guitar but have not tried it on dulcimer.....thanks for the inspiration! Loved the outtake at the end......cracked me up because that happens to me all the time when I record.

Very ice version of the piece - well played. Maybe one day I'll work up to it on my Aussie-made 6-string AD. You hear this piece in a lot of movies. The first time I heard it was on the original Conan the Barbarian movie with Arnie! The piece sou ds quite middle-eastern.

Hi Jessica, i use this tune in my song "King Henry" which is an old ballad, kind of the opposite to Beauty and the Beast. I learnt from a recording by a medieval group and play it on the Hammer Dulcimer which I sing with. It was lovely to hear the fluiditiy of your version without percussion. I see from Nonsuch Dulcimer club that you'll be a tutor next year.

I am glad you enjoyed my arrangement, RL! As far as I can tell, this piece is anonymous and was composed in the 14th century. The arrangement, however, is mine. :-)

Thank you for your questions, Fest! Standard tunings for mountain dulcimer include D-A-D, D-A-A, D-G-D, and C-G-C (although sometimes I play in C#-G#-C# or Db-Ab-Db). The bass string is an octave lower than the melody string (e.g. C3-G3-C4).

I have found for 20 € in south of Finistere near from Quimper a old dulcimer (probally 50 or 70 years (looking like old musical instrument from the 1 war world) very bassicly simply. the sound is not so terrific. The 1 frete is ruined.I have tuned in DDAD. and now i understant why you put the capo on the 1 fret : becoaus to have the minor game without impossible to play celtic and medieval music. Now i can play (or ty) to play your music. I met a guy there. A american named John Molineux who plays dulcimer since the sixtees. He has plays in the groupe of Roger Nicholson. He learn me a lot of think about this instrument. Do you know him ? He has a style near from yours i think. He is very friendly but i dont know if he travel back to the US

What a treasure! Perhaps it can be restored... :-) Yes, I have heard of both the players you mentioned, and I recall that Roger in particular played a lot of early music.

I was wondering if I could request a song from you. There is a video of a young lady playing the dulcimer by the name of Sara Morgan. She did a tune called "walkin' in the parolor" . I was wondering if you you could play and post that particular tune.

Ghosttoast., this song is indeed played with the strings tuned to D-A-D, but I put a capo on the first fret to place this song in the key of E minor. :-)
