Most people do not know that Shira battled cancer at a young age, had a kidney removed and a bone marrow transplant. This contributed to her slight build, allowing her to play roles that require it. Besides her excellent acting skills, of course. She's actually quite cheerful in her personal life.

Simon Klein I was going to reply to your comment, but I keep seeing your comments on a lot of people’s posts so I guess I’ll reply. This show isn’t meant to harm the hasidic community. There are many wonderful people in that community, but there are also some awful people as it is a common characteristic among many different groups of people. This show was only meant to share the story of a person who was raised by some not-so-great people

@Simon Klein She is only the storyteller, not the writer. Don’t confuse those. It was not her personal opinion. But even if it was, that still wouldn’t make it smear. Telling an untrue story can be smear. Telling a true story (which this story is) may be upsetting to some for giving them a different perspective that they might not have expected or wanted, but truth is truth. The truth is never smear just because it is not as pretty, comfortabel or correct as expected.

Wow she learned Yiddish for the role?! Anita’s performance was incredible in the series. My mother & I watched the whole thing in one go. Couldn’t take our eyes off her.

Jessica is the most generous and giving actor, it shows on screen and in real life.

@5,ooo LightYears Away Unorthodox is not about anything "extreme." It is about the Chassidic community from Brooklyn--Ultra Orthodox Jews. Unfortunately, Esti's story is not uncommon. Yes, there are many happy marriages with healthy sex lives amongst Satmar, or Belz, or Ger, or any other orthodox religious Jewish groups (from modern orthodox to Chassidic). However, for those who get married at 18 and have never seen TV, a movie, or the internet, and then have to have intercourse, for the first time (never having even held your husband's hand, let alone kissed him), can be very traumatic. And if not acknowledged or addressed, it is sure to lead to an unhealthy relationship. In the bedroom and out. Of course Satmar is angry about the movie. It is all over the internet. Just as all the stories of all the other Esti's have come out. If the Satmar community would actually acknowledge the problems and be a part of the solution, there would be far fewer Esti's in the world. There are other panel discussions on KZread about the movie, with women who have lived it. I suggest watching some. You will find it very enlightening.

@@stealthreporter5122 Again, not extreme. Just a different sect of the Orthodox religion that has different views and values. Those who use the internet as a medium to voice their opinions are largely those who have left the sect they were raised in, which took a lot of courage and determination, and have chosen to use the internet to help tell their story, as well as help others who may be in similar circumstances. They have already rejected the rules and confinements of their sect when they decided to leave and put it behind them. It is those who still claim to be Ultra-Orthodox and are picking and choosing what rules they follow (just as any jew does at any level), who are considered hypocrites.

First I saw Shtisel (which blew my mind). The character of Ruchami was mesmerizing to me which is quite an accomplishment if you take into account the outstanding group of collegeas of Shira Haas in that show. So when Unorthodox came out on Netflix I watched it immediately and was taken away by Shira's performance again. In a strange way, her acting has a cathartic quality, which is very rare. So I hope Shira's talent will be nourished and given the right amount of peace and rest to blossom. Be careful, her gifts are rare.

Shira did such a great job, that her character became forever cemented in my heart. I love when that happens.

I’d be shocked if this performance isn’t awarded with an Oscar. Absolutely unbelievable, had me in tears. Wonderful and a must watch!

After seeing Shira is Shtsel and Unorthodox it’s really strange to see her in colourful clothes and laughing.

Just got done watching Unorthodox. I was at the edge of my seat literally! Cried and cried. The scene at the lake really got to me. When I heard that during the divided Berlin era, swimming across the lake from East to West meant your death, I just ... sigh... wept. Having grown up in a communist country, the crossing from one world to another was the scariest thing! I could relate to that. This scene was a perfect metaphor for what Esty was going through. I wanted to jump in the screen and embrace her. Shira did such a spectacular job, wow! Everyone was just awesome! I can't wait to see what else Shira does. Shalom. :)

Just finished this 4 part series... I am so blown away with Shira Haas and her ability to convey how Etsy was feeling and it was so emotional. I literally in this moment just finished "Unorthodox", and wow, independently from the jewish martyr surrounding Esty (almost the majority of the story), his character and personality is so plausible, amazing and strong, also introvert (due to the alienation and rebuke from his "community"), I identified with her too in many aspects, her panorama (friends, her mother) establish a great fluency and power of ataraxia in the protagonist. I would love a second part, of the book and the series in the future ❤️

Or over time she developed more security. It's what happened to me!! People would never guess how quiet and to myself I aas when I was younger...my senior year in HS i just did a 180! Never been back!

She killed my soul. Broke me into small pieces. In every scene I felt like she was chipping away a little piece of me. Her inner battle between wanting to commit to the traditional expectations of her heritage and her yearning for "something better, something different" that the world outside of her community had to offer, GAH! I FELT IT. She's Amazing! And her song at the end.. AHHHHH. PAIN! YEARNING! SORROW! HOPE! FREEDOM! My heart broke for YANKY too, "I can be different too" 😭😭😭

It's nice to see actresses supporting each other.

It is a great story and watching it I felt sometimes like I was there, so real like, that I forgot it was a series, congratulations!....

I watched "Unorthodox" three times. Shira Haas was wonderful as Estey, as were all of the actors in this series. Yanky, her husband, was also excellent, as was Estey's mother, Yanky's mother, Estey's aunt and grandmother, and I could go on. Excellent show.

I saw her in other neflix series she was living in israel little girl help the mom with the baby brother and she was the niece of the husband the guys with blue eyes , in New York . THAT YOUNG GIRL PLAY PRETTY WELL. SHE IS A GOOD ACTOR , WE WANT SEE HER AGAIN IN THE TV , I like her have baby face etc

Loved her in Shtisel. So watched Unorthodox. Blown away. Chastain, on the other hand, has such good taste in what films she does, you're almost assured you'll get a good ride. Loved her in Miss Sloane.
