jessi was born and raised in the NYC area and moved to korea when she was a teenager. (her entire family still lives in america to this day.) she actually went through A LOT of hardship trying to be successful in the korean music industry, including being homeless and sleeping in bathhouses. there were multiple times she took extended breaks and went back to the states, but she perservered through a lot of unfair judgments (mostly for being “too aggressive,” “too American,” etc.) and is finally being recognized for her insane talent. seems the industry and general public are warming up to her individualistic style and honest-but-kind personality. she has her own YT talk show called show!terview with jessi that’s become a massive hit, and her music keeps blowing up now that she’s signed to PSY’s label, p-nation. she’s an absolute boss!

P-Nation is shaping up to be something substantial. Obviously it's gotten off to a good start, but if Psy keeps this up for the next few years and whoever he signs, P-Nation is going to become "that" label that's relatively small but punches way above it's weight class.

I would also like to add on: Jessi left America at 15 to pursue her dreams of becoming a singer. She moved in with her grandma in Korea. Then, she was signed to a label, and when she debuted on stage it was a flop, jessi also really didn't like what she was singing and doing because it wasn't her. She has been in many labels but none of them have really done her any good. She also was a part of the group 'Lucky J' but unfortunately disbanded (their songs are amazing!). Later on, she finally signed with P Nation (PSY) and is creating even more bops. She has been in this game since 2005 (when she debuted). She was also in Unpretty Rapstar where she was in second place, she also precided to roast people on numerous occasions. Now she is getting more reconization then ever before and she truly deserves it. She is also on 6sense (sixth sense). She is truly amazing, and please keep supporting her in the future!!

Iwouldn’t say she’s controversial but she’s a very honest and real person so she always speaks her mind it being good or bad. I respect her for not caring about other’s opinions Edit. Please don’t argue this is my POV

Yeah but her person is controversial in such a conservative society as the Korean one. It doesn’t mean she’s doing wrong or being provocative. Just means that people find her questionnable, and at a certain extent she causes people’s disagreements. Of course we can only salute her strong character and uniqueness !

She’s not really controversial, she’s just different from average k-artists. As she breaks from the stereotypes that they have to have to be all cutesy/people pleasers , while she isn’t afraid of showing a little skin and has a more extroverted/ bold personality. She’s a strong 💪 independent woman that speaks her mind and doesn’t care about what others opinions. And she gets hate for that as Korea is a conservative country. She’s talented, funny, kind, and beautiful inside and out 😊

Loved this reaction🔥 Jessi was born in NY and raised in New Jersey. She moved to Korea at 15 by herself and has been in the industry since she was 17 (she's 32 now) but never got the recognition she deserved until now. Her rise to fame's been a long time coming!!! She's been seen as "controversial" because she doesn't try to fit into the mold of what is expected of a kpop idol (fair skin, soft spoken, innocent, girly) --She's loud, outspoken but kind hearted and unapologetically herself. She's stayed true to who she is as an artist/person and the Korean public has finally warmed up to her an accepted her❤️

She just breaks stereotypes about korean artists in a conservative country. She’s similar to Hwasa in that sense, that’s probably why they’re good friends. She’s known to have many friends in the industry because of kind caring personality towards younger artists. People tent to be put off about that because of her strong appearance and bold personality.

Yea Jessi is def a controversial artist because she doesn't act like the "typical" kpop idol or Korean person generally. I'll just say she's NOT conservative in this sense. She is VERY headstrong and HIGHLY opinionated and many people don't seem to like that in Korea. Also, she went through ALOT to be where she is today. Fun fact: she was born in New York, raised in New Jersey, and moved to Korea at 15 but still went back and forth from the US and Korea. However, I love Jessi because she's soooo different and she knows that she is and OWNS it. She is a boss!

But at the age of 15, she came "alone" to South Korea (not even knowing the language) to start a career. 2) She's DEFINITELY NOT controversial. She/'s outspoken and true which is what makes her stand out. SHE IS GREAT!!!

she is controversial but in a good way. There are certain topics the Korean public avoid but she doesn't. she says things as it is and doesn't cover up shit. if she doesn't like someone she will say it and the funny thing is that the person turns out to have a horrible personality. That's why people label her that way, she's down to earth.

She has absolutely no problem showing off her figure and saying she's got jobs done etc, and if you watch her in variety shows you'll see how much different she is from everyone else. But SK has really started to accept her more and more, and it's great to see that all her work is paying off. Coz she's a really funny, sweet and badass woman.

Jessi has been in the game in one form or another for 15 years. She's now seeing major success and Im so happy about it. I guess you can say she is controversial only in that she doesnt fit into standard Korean looks (curvy) or behavior (unapologetic, loud, curses) . Korea is still rather conservative in manners and such, alot of rules on how to act etc. BUT people seem to be coming around. I have heard she is the nicest person to be around and work with, fellow artists admire and respect her. And if they dont Im pretty sure Jessi gives zero F. AND THATS WHY I LOVE HER!

Lived her life in New Jersey. At the age of 15, BY HERSELF, left for Korea. She’s not controversial in the sense of her doing things that aren’t right. Instead, she’s mostly judged by others who don’t like the way she acts and speaks her mind. Especially in the kpop industry, they don’t really see someone like Jessi. Even to the girlies who don’t fit Korea’s standards as an artist [hwasa, Tiffany, etc], she’s the most outspoken than the rest of them.

Yes "Jessi" her stage name, was Born in New York & raised in New Jersey, @15 she came alone to Korea to fight for her dreams as a Rapper/Singer, song writer, you name it that's Jessi, regarding the Controversial part of her career, it basically has smth. to do by how diff. she is from the stereotype of being a Kpop Idol, Artist in Korea, Idk if "racial discrimination" is the right word or description for what she's been through but I know that its b/w those lines, so she struggled, from company to company, until she finally found "Pnation" her match, where she can freely express herself in her music, so yeah thats the short version😊, but right now she's booming all over Korea because she is finally accepted or seen for who she really is as an Artist! She's just Legit of all Legit, just like my fav. Catchphrase of hers😂 "Don't Mess With Korean/American! "... That's why we call her "Queen of Queen's" because that's the word to perfectly describe both her as a person and as an artist😍 A Badass B😘... Love by both the old & young!

She used to be controversial in Korea but not anymore. People didn't like how aggressive she came across because of her loud voice and American mannerisms. She had a really strong and rude image. When people realized she's actually a huge softy and doesn't mean any harm with the blunt way she talks she blew up in popularity and is doing really well in Korea right now. :)

Jessi isn't k-pop lmao, she is a hip-hop/rap artist. Not all music that comes out of Korea is k-pop and in Korea what westerns consider "k-pop" is called Idol music. K-pop isn't a term used in Korea frequently, westerners just use it as an umbrella term to shove all Korean music under one label but it's not really appropriate. There is also a big misconception that k-pop is big in Korea. It isn't, the biggest genres in Korea are R&B, Hip-Hop/Rap, Ballads, and Trot. Very few "idol" groups make waves on Korean charts and are not streamed as significantly as soloists in R&B, Hip-Hop, Ballads, and Trot. In fact, out of the 100 most-listened songs in 2020 on Mel0n (Korean streaming service), only 20 were from idol groups and 10 of the songs alone were solely BTS. BTS is probably the only exception to idol music not being big in Korea because BTS is everywhere in Korea but other groups not so much. Although it can be argued at this point that BTS is beyond idol music and k-pop.
