Season Four - Episode Six: "Cornered"
Episode Overview:
As the drug cartel increases its pressure on Gus with the brutal hijacking of a shipment of blue meth, a story about Gale Boetticher’s murder combined with a suspiciously heartfelt phone message from her husband leads Skyler to confront Walt. Doing his best to defuse the situation, Walt insists that he only briefly crossed paths with Gale and had nothing to do with Gale’s death. However, when pressed about whether he and his family are in danger, Walt tells Skyler that he is the one people need to be afraid of and not the other way around. Walt later looks to apologize for his outburst, but discovers that Skyler is gone. So when it comes time to take possession of the car wash, he has to go it alone.
After Walt, Jr. reveals that his mom has taken the baby and left town, Walt admits that he isn’t planning to move back home any time soon. To defuse his son’s anger and relieve his own guilt, he buys Walt, Jr. a brand new car. Meanwhile, as Jesse continues to accompany Mike on his missions for Gus, Walt warns him that the drug boss and the private eye may be luring him into a trap. Not wanting to believe it, Jesse storms out of the lab, forcing Walt to enlist some women from Gus’s laundry to help clean up before starting in on his next batch. But when Gus learns about the unapproved arrangement, he punishes Walt by ordering the women to be deported back to Honduras.
As Skyler returns home, Mike takes Jesse to stake out a house where a pair of addicts are holed up with the stolen meth. Though Mike is content with just watching for now, an impatient Jesse relies on his personal experience and confronts the addicts face to face, recovering most of the stolen drugs and leading Mike to a message left by the cartel bosses inviting Gus to meet. In the wake of their stakeout, Jesse and Mike are rehashing the day’s events at a local diner when Gus arrives. And after he insists on a moment alone with Mike, Gus tells Jesse that he has chosen him to work with the private eye because he sees something worthwhile in him. Finally, upon returning to find a new car in the driveway, Skyler explodes, warning Walt that it’s the kind of purchase that will call attention to all the money they are making and ordering him to return it at once.

Paul's acting can t be more on point than this. It's incredible how he can portray three different emotions while standing still and not talking. And the transition between them requires accurate and precise contraction of very few face muscles, it's art.
What's funny is they're actually both right. Gus needed to occupy Jesse cus he couldn't kill him and was impressed at how Jesse conducted himself. Gus also wanted to drive a wedge between Walt and Jesse to undermine Walt.

Gus would still have Jesse killed once Walt was dead. Yeah, he may have "respected" Jesse to a degree but it doesn't change the fact that Gus hates to be closely associated with "junkies" which Jesse was (in Gus' mind). While Jesse did turn it around at this point, Gus knew that he was as unpredictable as Walt is (a trait that made Gus really hate Walt).

@@christiankarlkarganilla2763 he kills jesse and he loses the only one who can cook the meth at that high of purity. Unless Gus can find a reliable chemist its unlikely he would kill Jesse and even though he was a junkie, Jesse saved him and Mikes life in Mexico so maybe that changed things between them

@@christiankarlkarganilla2763 True but only applicable before Gus's Mexico tour with Jesse, Jesse earned Gus's and even Mike 's full confidence and respect after that, cuz Jesse basically saved their lives!
I love how the writing really skilfully brings Walt to that specific inarticulate conclusion "its all about me" but for Jesse and some of the slower audience members that line was their realization of the scene
Jesse: Walter: "This is ALL about ME"
This was the exact moment when Jesse became a former Navy SEAL
Occasionally, instead of watching these clips and thinking "this is an amazing series" I find myself thinking "damn, I wish I could write this something as good as this" It must be extremely satisfying

God I know right. Except I always wish I could act half as good as these two can.
I love how Walt is right, but he delivers his reasoning with such arrogance and self-importance that he ends up making their division worse
Rewatching this series ,in complete, a few times now it astonishes me how Walt’s deranged mind destroyed a perfectly run empire. Whether it was his paranoia, anger, vitriol, narcissism, jealousy, or general all around psychosis, the king lost his crown to himself.
My memories of breaking bad are slowly fading away so I watch these every now and then lol
2:33 Lewis Strauss when Oppenheimer and Einstein were talking to each other
The irony of this scene is that, as everyone has pointed out, it does play off of Walter’s insecurity and ego-centrism to be able to explain Gus’ ploy but be unable to convince Jesse of it. But it also utilises Jesse’s own insecurities, “maybe I’m not such a loser after all”, saving Mike made him feel useful which increased his self worth and reduce his dependency on Walter as a father figure of sorts. No one seems to have mentioned this, I guess it really is all about Walter.
MAN! I'm over here on furlough STILL in July because of Covid-19 binge watching breaking bad. I'm watching this episode today, its such a good one I almost missed it (Been just letting the episodes play through and kind of "half watching" them since I've seen them before.). I like this episode so much I rewound it lol. ANYWAY I'm glad I did, I missed so many little Easter eggs in it! The Beneke mug in the kitchen with Walt and his son, never noticed that. And I FINALLY realized that Jesse was setup by Gus and Mike and he actually wasnt getting ripped off. When Gus mentions he will pay for the repairs to his CARS (Plural) he obviously means both cars. And the conversation with Mike saying his plan worked to Gus. It was so tongue in cheek I never noticed it before! Glad to see I'm not crazy. Thanks for the video explanation.
Gus was always 2 steps ahead of Walt. Gus knew Walt would confront Jesse about this and thus draw them even more apart.
A pity Jesse was too insecure to heed Walter's advice. Sure, Walter came off as arrogant, but he was 100% right about all of this.

I love how Walt is right about being a set-up but the way he says it makes him out like a paranoid lunatic. I wouldn't have believed him either lol
"its all about me" How cute gus showing signs of love to walter 😊

Reminds me of when he took a guy's breath away right in front of Nacho and still, told Nacho "you are mine." I suppose it's always been teased that he likes boys!
"Its all about me" That's some Sheldon Cooper levels of ego there Walt!!!
Loved the part where he says “what if this is… about me, breaking bad?” Brilliant as alway Vince!
this is the moment walt realizes hes in Breaking Bad created by Vince Gilligan, truly a moment in this tv show bravo bince billigan
Every time I watch these Breaking Bad clips it reminds me how great of a show this was...
« This is all about me » has to be the funniest line in the show
I love how Walt was actually entirely right here
Jesse is much smarter than anyone gives him credit for.

Jesse was letting Gus and Mike manipulate his emotions and trick him into forgetting that this whole scenario has come about because Walt stepped up to protect him during a hideously self-destructive binge on Jesse's part. Walt set fire to his amicable and mutually respectful relationship with Gus for Jesse, and Jesse turns around lets them dazzle him with flattery.

Are you a former Navy Seal? Do you need to have your hands registered as lethal weapon? 🤣🤣🤣
"Register this" lolll it's been in my head for a whole day
"How long did those guys chase you, huh? Because the way you described it, they gave up pretty damn easy. No, no, this... this whole thing. This CHICANERY"
By no means was I sure and I KNEW it was a set up. But even as it was happening I remember suspecting and wondering if it was.
I love Walt’s intuition.
