Lyrics:
The last car on the line
I guess you're back doing time
The ghost of Christmas past
Left Walt Whitman in the trash
You started out with nothing but lonely days
You used to like the sad songs of doom and gloom
You started with nothing but throwaways
You couldn't live with me so you moved to
Brooklyn
Artificial desserts
Some have cars some have kids
Hit the pathmark after work
Some never been past the bridge
You started out with nothing but lonely days
You used to like the sad songs of doom and gloom
You started with nothing but throwaways
You couldn't live with me so you moved to
Brooklyn
I sometimes lie awake until sunrise
Wondering how we become what we despise
No more couches to surf
Only beaches in your dreams
No more trannies near work
It's still a drag walking in Queens
It's all blood money in the bank
Somehow some people find the nerve
Like the soldiers they thank down in DC
If I could only find the words
You started out with nothing but lonely days
You used to like the sad songs of doom and gloom
You started with nothing but throwaways
You couldn't live with me so you moved to
Brooklyn

As a New Yorker, this song has always hit home. Wonderful, Jesse.
Wow. It's always been a great song but this version is the best. The arrangement and production are stunning and the key fits Jesse's voice so much better. Easter egg in the video: playing the song in F# at the beginning and F at the end.... ;-)
A wonderful artist. Get well soon Jesse xx
The past is always part of out future. A beautiful re-release complimented by vintage footage and pictures❤🎶Bravo!

The fatal metaphor of progress, which means leaving things behind us, has utterly obscured the real idea of growth, which means leaving things inside us. GK Chesterton
Being a old Brooklyn boy, yes, I dig this mucho. Cool use of the old third avenue el footage !
Beautiful stuff. Excited to hear those new of a favorite record that meant so much to me 20 years ago...
Great song. Love the postcards on the red brick wall. Memories are sometimes all you have.
I moved to Brooklyn in 2003 when this song came out, I loved it then. It marked the beginning of the Brooklyn that became a brand. Brooklyn wasn’t a sexy word or a likely song title before then. I always connected to the song sitting in Brooklyn, it seemed like a respectful salute from an East Village prince. Brooklyn sucks now, but the song is still great.

It doesn't "suck" although NYC Democrats do.
I didn't think it was possible to improve on this song but Jesse found a way. It's even deeper and more introspective than the Bellevue version and the thoughtfully produced TFAOSD version. This video is so good, too. I love how he builds out the wall collage of meaningful artifacts. It's so poignant.
Man he's amazing, very inspiring to any songwriter.
Nice!!!!!!! THE BOOM!! AND THE PIANO TO BROOKLYN You Can Feel It , They Got it !! They captured a feeling !!
I will never forget the night I heard Jesse’s solo stuff for the first time. My Dad burned a Green Day album for me some twenty years ago and snuck in “Queen Of The Underworld” onto the disc. Thought surely it was an obscure “b side” until I discovered the total gift that was and still is “The Fine Art Of Self Destruction”. I’ve been a huge fan ever since that night! Looking forward to the re release of the album. See ya in NYC in March!
this is chilling, i'm in goosebump city & i've never even been to brooklyn & only ever had one new york night, love this version, the honeymooners intro gives it a really unique, special feel, & the fine art of self destruction reissue has a ton of bonus tracks, really a double album now, looking forward to 1/17/23! hoping for a future when glitter in the gutter can get a reissue too with all the deluxe bonuses esp sister christian! 🖤📽💘🎤🖤🎸💗✍🖤📓💗🎶💖🔥⚡💥✨🙌
I love your videos. I play some on my flat screen every day. I even made my own mixes. xo P.
This transplanted Bronx girl loves it!
My first time hearing him ... I like his music ... kind of reminds me of an American kind of version of The Verve, sad to hear his health situation, I'll keep him in my prayers.
Jesse, you did a beautiful job with this video. It looks like a lot of work went into making it. The song seems sad, love the pictures. God Bless you Jesse ❤
Beautiful song and video. ❤
I love this so much.
Beautiful.... gave me goosebumps!
Jesse comeback soon we need you.

@Darry Guli It's fascinating when an artist and vocalist only ever gains on himself. So rare. We're witnessing in real time what will be long remembered.
the bass and underside of the song sounds very similar to Lou Reed Take a Walk on the wild side. Haven't heard Jesse Malin in a long time. Glad he is still going
Nice job Cat!
Anyone know what bar that is? It doesn’t look like Niagara.
