Well done Jess, if we don't have MPs able to vote with their conscience, what on earth will we end up with? My question on this issue is that we constantly hear the Israeal has a right in war to defend themselves but does Palistine have, or has ever had, a right to defend themselves? This is never mentioned.

She is afraid of the muslims in her constituency.

She’s done the right thing for her career. We’re likely to see atrocities in Gaza for months to come at least. Taking a principled stance at personal cost will probably make her the best choice for the next leader of the party. Especially if she can deliver on ‘deeds not words’ to promote peace and unity.

Sorry Jess i think you are wrong on this one, Labours ammendment was the only one that talked about long term peace, the SNP's was a trap to cause division within Labour for purely domestic scottish political reasons and you fell into that trap. The footballification of this issue doesnt help and neither does the baggage left behind by corbyn's antisemitism. Had i been an mp last week i dont know how i would have voted my head would have abstained but my heart would have voted for the snp ammendment. Given the dire need to get a Labour government in the UK i think we should be listening to our heads not necessarily our hearts, what is happening in Palestine is truly awful but little Britain exerts very little influence, even more so since isolating ourselves from the EU.

What doesn’t help is Keir Starmer clear hypocrisy and double standard on this issue. He had no problem condemning Russia illegal occupation of Ukraine and support sanctions and investigations by the ICC into war crimes committed by Russia. We now have Israel, a country that according to countless UN resolutions and the ICC has been Putin Palestinians under illegal suffocating occupation for over 50 years. A country that cut food, water, medicine, fuel and even international aid from 2 millions civilians, half of them children. A country that is indiscriminately bombing civilians and has murdered 6 children every hour. Despite this level of barbarism shown by Israel Keir Starmer suddenly thinks it’s not a political place to condemn Israel or call these actions war crimes while he had no problems doing exactly that when it was Russia. If that is not corruption and hypocrisy I don’t know what is.

Rubbish - genuine concern from SNP MPs. Not the time to play political games. How many more Palestinians have to die before there is conflict resolution. At the end of the day Jess was representing her constituents.

@@deklane3139she has clearly and repeatedly denounced Hamas and their terrible, hateful action. She simply has a different opinion to you on how best to secure peace in the short and long term. Personally, I would have voted for a ceasefire, but I’d do so with significant doubt about if I was right. Life is seldom as simple as many appear to think, the ramifications can be unpredictable. Sometimes we stand on principle, in this case the wholesale slaughter of civilians, sometimes on pragmatism, sometimes a bit of both. Voting for a ceasefire is not anti Israel, it’s merely disagreeing with the way they are going about achieving their goals. As I said, I would have voted differently, but I wonder how many grudges are being created by Isreal’s actions and if it will ultimately fuel the hatred and violence. Personally I’m glad for people like Jess Phillips that I disagree with, but who make a good argument for a highly defendable opinion. I wish other politicians were as principled and open.
