Jerry shmoozes about Pauline Kael

JERRY LEWIS: "Pauline Kael. She's never said a good thing about me yet. That dirty old broad. But she's probably the most qualified critic in the world. Cause she cares about film and those who are involved in it. I wish I could really rap her. But I can't. Cause she's very very competent. She's knows what she's talking about."

Kael did have a good word for Jerry Lewis, in her first book: "The Nutty Professor is too long and repetitive, but Jerry Lewis has some scenes that hold their own with the silent classics." That's pretty high praise, from her.

Mankewicz was talking about most people. He was talking about the majority of youtubers commenting on this interview, (many of whom are calling this guy an arrogant egomaniac). When are people going to learn that the success of another is not their failure? That it's impossible to put someone (anyone) in a box? That the way someone perceives themselves has no bearing on you, and should not effect you in anyway? The lack of confidence the average person has in themselves is appalling.

LaughterMadeFat My bad. You personally didn't describe him as such, but pointed out that 'many are calling this guy an arrogant egomaniac'. My point was that that's precisely why people 'judge him so poorly', not because of his so-called 'honesty', but because of his demeanor, his arrogant, superior attitude, or as you call it, his 'tone'.

Wonder why Kael didn`t like Jerry Lewis?. Many Jewish critics while decent writers have vast pretensions and tend to dislike Jewish comics no matter how brilliant. This could be construed thus as antisemitism. On the other hand Lewis is a god to the French. He is a god to them. And to my mind, as an American living in Britain, he is a god.

The same Pauline Kael who said about Stanley Kubrick's "2001 - A Space Odyssey" that it was pretty much the most boring thing she ever saw. Let that sink in for a moment. And THOSE people then pretend because THEY don't like it, they are in the right and their opinion weights harder than everyone else's. And that's why i never give a damn what Critics say because they are ALWAYS wrong.

Kathy Kautzman, He was never jealous of Dino and it wasn't the cause of their break up! LOL . Actually Dino hated that the critics would only pay attention to Jerry and not him! That was one of the reasons that lead to the split. There were so many outside forces that lead to that split as well! Not sure why people depict Dino as an angel and Jerry as a monster! When a relationship is over it is never only one man's fault. Jerry took care of the writing for the team, the business part, and pretty much everything while Dean only played golf. All I am saying is that there were numerous factors involved. It wasn't just Jerry!

I can rap Pauline Kael, Jerry. This is the woman who called 2001: A Space Odyssey "a monumentally unimaginative movie." What a dullard.

Pauline Kael said 2001: A Space Odyssey was “unimaginative”-She can be dismissed. Cool to see Jerry Lewis back in the day. Where are these shows today? Don’t exist.

Jerry Lewis isn't quite correct about Pauline Kael. Kael's attack on Orson Welles was one of the most intellectually dishonest acts by a critic. She lost all credibility on that score. She was also completely clueless about John Cassavetes' work. She did an interview with Stan Brakhage that was one of the most egregiously insulting things I've ever heard, and Brakhage was way too patient and nice to her, she was a complete schmuck. Kael was a jumped-up piss-ant, a no-talent.
