I've watched him for years. In terms of physical stature I related to rice far better than most receivers who were fast and stronger. The one thing that I have not seen any other receiver do as good as Rice was his he had zero wasted movement and could beat guys off of the line of scrimmage and enough years and timing with a hall of fame quarterback and you'll have a sweat connection. Rice looked fast because he could make defenders go off balance which gave him his crazy separation and he could break his route in a flash. I mean just watch him run a hook route and oh my goodness. The one thing his game lacked was making contested catches, but for him those were rare.

I never really knew how fast Jerry Rice was, because they always made him run in slo-mo. And now that I'm seeing it, he's pretty freaking fast. BTW, all you stickum guys, stickum doesn't break tackles. Stickum doesn't get him open. Stickum doesn't move his legs. Stickum doesn't move his arms. Stickum doesn't help him jump. Honestly, he probably could have done the same thing without stickum. I mean, the gloves that wideouts wear today, they're super sticky, yet no one complains about them.

Modern NFL receiving gloves are 5x as powerful at gripping footballs than the best stickum available back in the day. Also if he used it every single game i guarantee he would have been caught, he would never have gotten away using it for 20 years. Even though this is a Rice highlight reel, i found myself going time and time again, "look at that throw." Montana and Young were so good at hitting rice in stride. those 3 had excellent chemistry together. Throw after throw is just perfect on the timing and execution of the route. even with all the scoring in todays game, i dont think anyone will ever beat jerrys TD record.

When I first saw Jerry highlights, tbh I didn't understand what made him the goat. "He's always open" I said to myself. But then I realized. HE'S ALWAYS OPEN. He was the greatest route runner ever, with the surest hands ever. Jerry just had a natural ability to get himself separation and then cut it up the field for gains. He was always in the right place at the perfect time, and if the ball was a little off, he'd find a way to go get it. You'd say, "how the hell do they let THAT man get THAT open?!" But that's what made him great: they're doing everything they can to stop him, and he STILL gets that open. Dude is the goat receiver by a country mile

Jerry Rice didn't get caught for using "stickum". Jerry in an interview simply stated early in his career when it was widely used still in the NFL to gain an edge that he also used it. He stated it nonchalantly because it's use wasn't a secret. Rice is so far and above the greatest receiver the NFL has ever seen, his stickum use is irrelevant. Especially considering we know it was used by NFL receivers up to the late 80's when they cracked down on it.

Looking at the comments, people seem to forget or not know that Rice’s breakout year in 1986 came with Montana missing half the season. Rice tore it up with Jeff Kemp of all people at QB. He dropped a lot of passes his rookie year but you knew he was going to be great when he was dominating with Jeff Kemp playing QB. His numbers didn’t really suffer either with Steve Bono and Elvis Grbac at QB either when Young missed games in 91 and 95.

The thing I can say about Rice that is the biggest compliment is that his highlights don’t look as amazing as some other players because he was clearly so much better then the DBs covering him. Most of the plays Rice broke so open that if he had a step on his man he. Seemed to know exactly how to cut to make 1 step 5 steps and an walk in touchdown. Where other players like AB had the OMG how did he catch it moments, Jerry Rice was so good he was able to be in the position where wasn’t toe tapping while diving out of bounds, he has the clear step on his man and if he didn’t he made the mid-air adjustments to help lead his defender just far enough away from the ball that Rice could make the tight coverage catch look easy.
