Jerry Garcia's Rip-Snortin' Cocaine Interview

I extracted this audio from an informal pre-show backstage interview from the Paramount Theater in Portland, Oregon, October 2, 1977. I don't think it's a coincidence they opened the show with "Casey Jones." Why did Jerry Garcia go to Disney World? Because he heard the lines were long.

He stated that cocaine was not addictive and was not considered to be as big a problem for the young due to the high price it cost at the time. This is awesome lol. At this point in time it started being heavily regulated. But in '66 my dad start working at a pharmacy. He had to make the codeine and other meds from scratch. There was a safe where they kept pure cocaine. It was never really that big of a deal. He jokes about how he even had to call the orders in when it was getting low. Lol, with a wink and a nod I know they never kept track of what was there either. So, I'd hazard to guess even in the '70s with the right connections they were not doing something imported. Crazy to think about nowadays...

Great comment. I recently read a lengthy transcript of an old Dan Peek interview. He said that he and the other members of America had been playing together as teens, from 1963, gigging , practicing, and touring right until their success hit full bore ( 1970?)….He said that he was a multimillionaire at age 19, going on 20. Pretty much overnight. Anything he wanted, he could buy, and he had the best of everything. The problem though, for him at least, is he said that because of their newly born fame , they had huge a huge responsibility to tour for their label. He hated the travel, groupies, and the partying. He said that he was miserable being with his band mates and they had to be together 24/7…..practically hated each other most of the time… His escape was drugs….LSD , Hash, quaaludes, amphetamines, alcohol, and LOTS of cocaine. I believe he had over a six year run with his abuse before he got squared away. His biggest point was that it was the most horrible feeling to have everything ( money , fame, possessions) and be emotionally drained, miserable, and addicted, while not enjoying their music in those prime years . Apologies for the lengthy reply, but your comment struck a chord ( no pun intended) and I immediately thought of Peek’s interview about the drugs and conflicts with immense talent as artists.
