Jerry Garcia Envelope Filter Tone (Comparison to LIVE '81 GD)

Музыка

As requested, here's a quick demo of my MicroTron IV envelope filter. I tossed in some footage of the Dead for comparison. Thanks for watching. Like and subscribe for more videos. Feel free to leave other requests in the comments!

You must be a reader or something I was listening to this exact 80's show last night, and you put in a comparison! I think the early 80's shows are the peak for how good his wah sounded. I'm only 16 but I've started listening to the dead a whole bunch because I got these Mutron videos recommended and I got obsessed with his tone. I have to say this is the best/closet sounding estimated I have ever heard (I'm rewinding some of your riffs a billion times). There is something so captivating about his speaker and amp setup even on just the clean setting that makes your hair stand up. I do have one question though: How does your milkman compare to your SMS preamp? For my birthday I have just scored a 1 by 12 JBL E120 in a cab for only 300 on reverb and I got it plugged up to my amp. Do you recommend the Milkman 50/ 100, can it get as close as this? You made my day though thanks so much for making this!

Cool that this video made your day! Another case of strangers stopping strangers. What a coincidence about the show I picked. Glad you've joined us on this tone chasing journey. To answer your question, I would say go for a Milkman. With your 1x12 you are going to be totally portable since the Amp only weighs 2.5 pounds and you can zip it into the pouch of a gig bag. As for how it sounds-through the JBL, you will NOT be disappointed. I picked mine up used online for about $450 (ridiculously good price) from a Guitar Center. You can find deals on Reverb occasionally and it can be worth it. 50 or 100 Watts... you can probably go with the 50. It's LOUD. I can crank up my 50 and keep up with my band just fine. With the Milkman you can record much easier too. And practice silently with headphones. A big win in my college dorm was the headphones feature. Yes, the SMS + McIntosh has a distinct thing, but you won't be able to take it anywhere without expecting to carry 75 pounds of gear, and work with a few too many watts for a 1x12. The best bet for your money and any gigging and recording interests is the Milkman. There's a bit of extra brightness you can get out of the full Jerry setup, but the Milkman is absolutely KILLER. Basically the same thing as the whole Jerry setup, a tube preamp into a low noise, high power solid state preamp, but portable. As it turns out Jerry's modified Twins shared a lot of circuitry with another Milkman Amp meant for pedal steel. Good thing the Amp 50/100 is made for pedal steel players too. A big part of what Milkman does is pedal steel, which is a VERY similar tone genre to Jerry. What would make more of a difference in the tone equation are some DiMarzio pickups. Super II or Dual Sound in the MIDDLE position. The middle pickup is the secret sauce that makes you sound the most like Jerry through any amp or speaker. Expect some more videos soon on the Milkman vs the full setup. But the Milkman won't let you down.

@deadicatedguitars Sweet man thanks for all the great advice! Hopefully, all be able to get a dead band together or something. It's hard to find people our age who are also into this music because most kids like rap and Kendrick Lamar. Thanks for all the detail though I think I will try to get a milkman. It's up to us to make sure the music never stops!

sounds great! Try a bit more treble or mids imo if you want to match him perfectly. But you don't need that unless you're in a band mix anyway.

Hey quick question... I have just received a weber cali 12 and got it screwed into a cab in combination with the milk man 100. It sounds great but have you gotten your speakers ¨broken in¨ and does this make a difference?

Also the weber speaker on the website in the notes says to "avoid distortion" should I not use overdrive pedals with it?

@@BanjoSkeleton I got mine used/a couple years old, so it's fair to say they were already broken in when I got them. Play a variety of percussive stuff and chords at medium volume for an hour or so to break in the speaker. It'll loosen up a bit and be more responsive. And you can totally use overdrive, but be aware that the speaker is very bright, especially the aluminum capped ones. Just adjust the brightness of your effects to taste. Enjoy and post a vid so I can hear!
