Best western ever made. Sam Peckinpah was an incredible filmmaker. The opening soundtrack accompanies the men on horseback into town, action stops on black and white still images: amazing cinematography. I have a vinyl copy of this soundtrack. Jerry Fielding is a brilliant composer.

And sir, as you may well know, Holden ONLY got the part because Lee Marvin decided to do " Paint Your Wagon", instead of this masterpiece! OMG, did he live to regret that decision! Borgnine's role was supposed to go to Charles Bronson, but he also turned it down. Ouch!! ------Wolfsky9, 70 y/o

Did not know that, thanks. Fascinating how many "what if" roles were offered and refused, i.e. Tom Sellick turned down Indy Jones because of his TV show.

Holden had several solid performances in the 1950s, including 1953's "Stalag 17," for which he won a Best Actor Oscar, and he was excellent in 1976's "Network," his last great role, so he's got at least a couple of "gold rings," but yeah, in between plenty of turkeys. Hard to imagine Lee Marvin doing this role in "The Wild Bunch." Holden seems perfectly cast here. Marvin was pretty good in another western, "The Professionals," but that was an entirely different kind of film.

i liked the score better than the movie. fielding is incredible. his scores always have this offbeat clashing of instruments which is so cool and surreal, even in action based movies like this. i think Straw Dogs is his best work (also nominated) because the movie is a mind-game between hoffman and the town bullies.

I have read that Peckinpah thought of creating an anti-war allegory when he developed The Wild Bunch. The carnage of the Vietnam war was likely on his mind at the time of the film's production.
