I don't know them but I couldn't be more happy about them winning. They worked all their life and finally figured out how to beat the system and put some money in their pocket. Instead of being greedy they decided to share the wealth. Amazing story. Congratulations to them all.

If this couple personally made 8 million.. which is a 36 million spread divided among 25 investors.. then the avg of 4.2 million a year in returns equally for a 6 year period.. then their group averaged 168K per year in profits.. then rotated 220K as an annual investments for an avg of $388K in returns over this time frame!

@@davidquinn9676 That's not how state lotteries work. Someone could win every single time and the state still makes money. A specific amount, generally 25%, but can vary by state, of all sales goes to the state. That money is *_not_* counted as part of the lottery "winnings." Even when someone wins, about 40% of it will be taxed, with a large portion going back to the state. (Yes, the government double dips on taking taxes.) What you seem to be thinking of are casinos, but you're still incorrect. Casinos play the long game. Slot machines always favor the house, even those that promote 96% winnings/payback, because that means 4% is _always_ going to the house/casino. And the 96% are the rare, high-end (usually they are in the 80% range). At casinos, all games favor the house, with the exception of Blackjack. And that's where people who can count cards and know the statistics succeed. (Both of which are legal to do.)

This is a great story. This man did nothing wrong or illegal. He’s smart at math and figured out the odds. This is the same reason, similar people are banned from Vegas casinos (private businesses). Those good at math aren’t allowed to play there because they would lose money. All the, “State lottery” could do is, shut down, “this” version of lottery game. I loved this story especially how generous they were in sharing their knowledge. A lot of people won in this including the state, so I wish they didn’t stop the game. Jerry was very observant and methodical by reading the rules of the game, understanding the odds of winning after the roll down and applying his basic math skills to determine his rate of return. While many say he was a genius, he is very humble besides generous in sharing saying it was applying basic math skills. He certainly was smart enough to figure out the so called loop hole and be able to apply his math skills in his head. While I understand the explanation of the roll down and could follow thee math presented I wish there was better explanation on the odds of winning calculations he did both from initial odds of winning five, then four then three numbers and how he was able to break down the returns so quick. For me it would have been helpful to have more visual breakdown of all the math that Jerry was able to do in his head. I like being able to follow it better and yet I think it is remarkable how he was able to quickly put it all together in his head and seize the opportunity he discovered. State of California never had a "Roll down" Lotto. After this man explained what he did one can see why lotteries don't do this anymore. I have a mathematics degree and the ONLY lottery system I ever had was solving the algorithm placement of winning scratcher tickets when the lottery first came out in 1985. I would buy up 500 to 1000 scratchers then scratch off the areas where the winners were located then return the unscratched tickets to the store where I purchased them for a refund. Back then one could return unscratched tickets; can't now. Then I would redeem the winners at another store. It worked until the tickets were sold with the legal condition that once sold, gone for good from the store, whether one scratches them or not.
The really smart part was how well they kept it all documented.
I just found this surfing on KZread and it made me happy all over again. I remember this story from when it first aired on TV and, once again, it restores my faith in humanity. Thank you, I needed this. Congratulations to all the winners!

Fantastic reporting on a fellow who paid attention during his math classes… Education pays off for those who use it!
What an uplifting story. Good for them.👍🏻
WOW!!! What a heartwarming story & they’re fellow Michiganders! All my respect to Jerry. He’s a mathematical genius. However, he’s so humble and just matter of fact.

State should be embarrassed and fire everyone associated with the lottery, with a college degree, who missed this. But nobody gets fired for incompetence in government. What a feel-good story!?

The “underdog” was the hundreds of thousands of people who lost the money that they won as well as the (tax) money the state took out of the prize pools.

@@sarahdeshay1394 No one forced them to play the lottery. No one forced them to vote to allow the state to sponsor a lottery. No one forced the state to be so incompetent that they devised a game that could be 'beaten'.

@@mitchyoung93 Not so much beaten, just cracked to loosen the pools wall to leak a little. The state still "won" 120 million in profit, then taxed the winnings of 26 million enough that this couple only "won" after taxes 8 million... So it's not really incompetence, a couple someones figured out the numerical loophole and got just rewards

The dumb part is the lottery commission "didn't know" how easy it was to win. They accused the winners of being the problem.
