The greatest bass in my opinion

Bravo. One of the finest bass vocalists that several generations have had the gift to listen to.

This is the most resonant voice ever to sing the bass arias in Messiah. Tozzi-a good friend of mine, could not compare with this!

I'm a young, fairly low Bass and can attest to that. I can get the Notes, sure. But actually making music there? Incredibly difficult.

Jerome Hines bass voice was an impressive instrument- great in every way

I have no problem with tempo, given the majesty of Jerry Hines' voice and that of his rendition.

It is so much more difficult to articulate and sustain the lines in coloratura at such a tempo. This goes to demonstrate that Jerome Hines is a true master of his art. BTW a majestic bass can fire off coloratura runs like any providing the conductor allows him free reign.

I see that a lot of knowers do kritisize the tempo. Today we can hardly imagine 100%what tempo Handel intended here. The only thing is clear, that his music was a big style and loud and magestic, drammatic and heroic(excuse my english) . So should be the voice. In Handel's times it was also 1/2step lower than today. So we have real bass with big voice, in any case not a baritone! So we have here something near the Handel's tempo. Why do I think, that it was loud and big? 1)it sounds very testesteron, 2) Jonatan Swift wrote a parody on Handel's music comparing it with Giant's music, that was impossible to listen:so loud it was..

Tempo also depends on what's best for the singer...what will be most successful for those involved.

....thank you. I am always enjoying Klemperer Tempi. The value of every note leaves space for Händels breath. Today tempi are so fast, you would assume, dinner is waiting at home or or the door is wide open for intruders. Here everything is perfect, awesome. Jerome Hines is an icon for all current singers. He should be. Mi piace moltissimo

All of Klemperer's tempi were slow

Hines lends his rich and powerful voice to two arias from "Messiah". The aria 'But Who May Abide' was recorded at a time when it was customary to assign this number to baritones and bassos, and I prefer to hear it sung by a bass or baritone.

The slow tempo mars this. Speed this up to 1.25 and it sounds much better without sacrificing Hines sound.

When considering criticizing any singer for his/her slower tempo, one must consider the fach. Hines is an obvious dramatic bass. Most singers who sing this aria are lyric baritones. Hines cannot have gone any much faster than this given the voice type, his voice was a truck, heavy and big. Singers who do this any faster are mostly smaller, lighter voices. The criticism that it is slow is not justified given his type of voice.

Bullcrap! Maria Callas was a HUGE HEAVY instrument that learned how to move VERY well. Jerome Hines could move however Klemperer had an affinity for making of certain music go slower than what was written. It has NOTHING to do with the fact Hines was a "dramatic". Dramatic voices just like Lyric Voices are REQUIRED to do coloratura and fioritura -- no excuses whatsoever. Just because you're a lyric basso cantabile, means you learn how to cantabile! And do it with the utmost respect to yourself and the composer's wishes.

You don't learn fachs. I never said that singers cannot learn to to coloraturas. And facts like Maria Callas had a huge but agile voice are only exceptions, in other words rare. That is why not many people can replicate the extent of her repertoire. So I call bullshit on you.

STOP!! i AM sick of all this idiocy. KLEMPEReR wanted the tempi slow. NOT Hines. In Hines' La Scala Debut as Hercules he sings coloratura very fast. Klemperer preferred slow tempi to almost everything. I heard he died during an upbeat :)

Xerkun Fach has NOTHING to do with someone singing fast or slow, sir. You're highly uneducated if you believe so. People couldn't repulicate Callas because her voice was one of a legendary vocal fach/type called the Soprano Sfogato/Assoluta. She had more things than the average soprano voice could even handle or imagine thus, she was credited for singing repertory which fit her temperment and because she wanted to restore the drama back to the classic grande seria of opera. She was tired of canarys like Pons, Peters, Sutherlands come in and THINK they could sing the big girl repertory without having expression or emotion to back up their singing. Same goes for Jerome Hines. He had a voice only blessed by God himself that allowed him to further cement these same ideals as well. You're idiocy regarding Klemperer is not only astounding but saddening. It is a KNOWN FACT, Flemperer had an affinity for slowing tempi down to a heavy degree.

Hines has a terrific voice. The tempo, however, is a bit too slow.

It's too slow. Faster tempo makes a more effective and powerful recording, but if this is how Klemperer wanted it, so be it.
