Jeremy McGrath The King of Supercross

Glen Helen Raceway and Dubya are very excited to announce the 2022 recipient of the 26th Annual Edison Dye Motocross Lifetime Achievement Award will be Jeremy McGrath, the most popular motorcycle racer of the 1990s. This seven-time AMA Supercross and AMA 250 National Motocross champion transcends motocross.
Born in San Fransisco on November 19, 1971 and later moved to Southern California. After just three years of riding as an amateur, McGrath made his AMA debut in 1989. He finished his first Supercross season ranked eighth in the 125 West Region Series. In 1990, he rode for the Kawasaki’s support squad and began to make his an impact on the sport. That year, he won his first 125 West Region Supercross race in Las Vegas and finished the season ranked second overall in the series.
While McGrath was becoming known as primarily a Supercross specialist even at this early point of his career, he proved he had skills on the outdoor circuits as well. In total McGrath won 17 AMA Motocross Nationals. In 1991, he was ranked fifth in AMA 125 motocross and eighth in the class in 1992. McGrath also won the Tokyo Supercross in 1992. After winning his first AMA Supercross race, McGrath went on to dominate the 1993 AMA Supercross Series, winning 10 races and earning the championship.During his career, McGrath rode for Kawasaki, Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha. He was the first rider to own and ride for his own factory-backed team. He announced his retirement before the opening round of the 2003 AMA Supercross Series in Anaheim. Though retired from full-time Supercross and motocross competition, McGrath continued his racing career after being inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame. McGrath’s legacy in the sport of motorcycle racing will be felt for generations to come.

Nothing is greater then hearing Art Eckman announce McGrath. MC was my idol growing up. Had all the replica gear, replica helmet, bike parts everything. Wanted to be like him just like every other kid. He’s what motivated me to start racing and want to ride a lot. Met him several times. I had a friend from church who was friends with Jeremy (Eric “big e” bartoldus) and him working for GT he was able to get me a GT showtime bmx bike which i still have. He also let me meet him in the Yamaha trailer at the 99’ glen Helen national and get the number plate to the bmx bike signed. Such a memorable thing.

"Plus... He was an MXA test rider"... God Bless you Jody! Jeremy was so meaningful to all of us in the sport. Ask me what my son's name is... Why Jeremy of course! That's how far reaching Mr. McGrath was, is and always will be. On a side note, if my Mother only knew how much school lunch money went to MXA mags when I was a kid... I'd be in deep doo-doo. God Bless the Jody's, the Wolfman's, the Super Hunkys and all the rest. You guys changed young guys lives...

Jeremy will always be one of the most RAD dudes to exist in my eyes. As a teenager, I met him at autograph booth and saw him win Minneapolis SX twice, then at Millville he stepped away from his pre-race pit routine to sign my cast. Brought him joy to know I broke my wrist racing BMX haha. Legend ❤

I talked to his dad, Jack for a long time at Las Vegas 2000. I asked him how his son is so cool and humble with his fans. His answer: “He better better be humble! All can do is ride a motorcycle. Can’t even mow a lawn worth a shit!” I’ve never laughed so hard. When I met Jeremy, he asked if I raced, what class etc. He encouraged me to have fun. One of the best days of my life. Great guy.

The greatest icon in dirtbike history. If you look at moto gp, F1, basketball, football (soccer for usa) for example, you don't necessarily need to have the most titles, most world championships, most records or most accolades to be considered the greatest ever or greatest icon. MC did what Jordan did, put the sport to a whole new level of popularity and greatness, made the sport even more interesting and classy, been the most copied and followed especially after being retired. People wanted to ride and dress like the MC, same happened with Jordan. An icon's style is timeless. MJ had (and still has) the best looking and most iconic sneakers, MC had (and still has) the best looking and most iconic helmets, same with their videos. MC the King of SX, simply the King of Dirtbike.

i saw the sport grow in my country since the 70's, and it all grew in 83 when i started avidly reading motorcycle magazines, then in 1989 everything changed, i saw my first copy of Motocross Action Magazine in my hands, and that boosted my taste for motocross and supercross tremendously, and later on the pages of the magazine i followed the emergence of this talented young Man, i think from 1993 onwards, which only increased my passion and enthusiasm even more, becoming since 1996 a Heart fan of this Guy who is eternal inspiration for Motocross fans and riders around the world, in addition to being an example of humility and character off the tracks, the Sport owes a lot to the person of Mr. Jeremy McGrath, who contributes to my own motivation never running out...

We all gather around the TV rooting for Jeremy McGrath to win just watching the style the smoothness the pin point landings and just the way the bike was put on point lap after lap after lap was amazing definitely inspired all of us to get on our dirt bikes and ride and improve and just try to get better and do things right so much fun. I’m not a big autograph guy, but I met him at Redbud at 97 and he signed my fox hat. I still have it to this day. It’s about the only autograph I have, but I’ll never get rid of it. Showtime!!!!!

Happy Memorial Day to you and your family King Jeremy McGrath! You've upheld the American Dream and your Supercross record is unbreakable. I had this feeling if Eli would have carried his momentum and wrapped up the SX title a few weeks ago... that he could have taken that outdoors... and perhaps 2 more seasons he could have come up with 21 more wins. But 2 of those were supposed to have been this season... even then... it was a longshot. If Chase gets it together, he should stop Jett from realizing 72 wins. Only other guy alive racing expert or pro that might stand the chance to pull it off... Danger... Thanks for the great racing and good vibes King Jeremy!✌😎🏁

I was fortunate enough to get into racing at the end of 1993 when I was 23. I started watching the SX races in '94 (back when we'd have to wait over 2 months for them to be televised, lol) and was just amazed at how effortlessly MC seemed to float around those difficult tracks. I went to my first SX in '95 at the Seattle Kingdome, and seeing a SX track in real life mesmerized me. I probably stood staring for a good 10 minutes without moving. Seeing Jeremy in person (and the other racers) was pretty exciting. I went again in '96, and then moved to SoCal to start my civilian firefighting career, AND I had chosen SoCal because, if you rode and raced, that was the place to be! I just did local races, but I got to hit all of the SX and MX races down there, so I was following MC's career very closely. In '98 I finally had a chance to meet him at the Chaparral Open House before the opener at the LA Coliseum. Totally humble and a nice guy. I even said something like "you really need to get your championship back this year" and he replied with "I've been training my butt off to do just that. Are you going to the race?" to which I said, yeah, I'll absolutely be there. I was stoked to be at those races until the end, when he retired after getting hurt on the KTM. Living in SoCal and riding at Perris, or Glen Helen, or Elsinore, you get used to seeing the top pros at them during the week, but I still always got excited when I knew Jeremy was at the track that I showed up to on a particular day. I couldn't wait to get out on the track and try to race with him, which usually lasted for maybe two corners, lol. I came into the sport as a spectator at exactly the right time, and feel very fortunate that I saw the best Supercross racer of all time. Thanks for the memories, MC

Short story I was with my son and he was a huge fan I don’t remember what year it was but it was back when jeff Ermic was challenging him, I live in Vegas and it was the big show down , I was walking the pits and of course he was the man and that’s who everyone wanted to meet. So everything was roped off and we where standing back just watching and a parent came up with another guy holding a clip board and got in and the kid sat on his bike talked , took pictures and my young son didn’t understand why he couldn’t do it to. Well I found out it was a make a wish request and I explained that to my son but he was 6 and he just looked at his hero and wanted to be like the other kid So after a few minutes and I am telling you there was maybe a100 people lined up to get stuff signed etc. we were leaving and and a heavy set guy softly yelled to me as my back was to him. We both walked up to each other and low and behold it was Jermey dad, he had been watching us,so he told me to hang on and in less then 5 minutes my son was hugging Jermey taking pictures and anything els we wanted, I mean here we were at the championship in Vegas with so many responsibilities on him but yet he did what he did. That is why the people love him so much yes a great rider but a greater man!! My son is 32 now and to this day he recalls that day minute by minute and so do I. Just wish there were more people in the world like jermery it would be a better world to live in.

This dude got me into racing, even though I never reached the pinnacle like Mc ? I have years and years of amazing memories that cant ever be removed from my hardrive... You tend to forget about the injuries that pile up and Dr. bills , lost sleep by your loved ones worrying about ya . I dont ever think of the bad times , I only think of the amazing times . In retrospect ? his mindset rubbed off on a South Carolina kid that became the baddest dude in his town on a dirtbike . won some Amateur nationals at Muddy Creek , went to tha Lorretta's 3 times and finished in the top 10 once , His persona had to rub off.... Small town kid that actually thought he could become the King ?? Yea, Mc definitely left an impression... Nothing but love and respect here , You were and STILL are my biggest role model..
