Jeremy McGrath on changing Supercross, where modern Dirt Bikes are lacking and more…

Jeremy McGrath is the King of Supercross. With 72 wins and 7 championships he stands alone as the man inside a stadium. Obviously I am a lifelong fan of MC but it wasn't until recently we got to hang out at Mammoth Motocross where I got to see the secret to all of his success. He really love riding his dirtbike.

On track is probably 2000 Dallas supercross where he was clipped by Windham coming out of the first turn. I was in the stands no more than 20 feet away from where he hit dirt. Watching him in person come back from 40+ seconds down to almost a podium was insane. Also, he started quadding the second rythym section on a 2 stroke!! He had to have been 8-10 feet higher in the air than everyone else. It doesn’t translate on tv. Off track, his wife was battling her diagnosis and searching for donor matches. She has thankfully made a healthy recovery. He actually took the time to message me and say thank you for volunteering as a candidate. Who knows how many hundreds or thousands of people he did that for. MC is a 100 percent class act and quality human being

Really good stuff - I was following SX in the late 90s/early 00s so it was good to hear the inside take from Jeremy. I was not such a big fan at first of MC since he seemed cocky, but this sheds some light as to his approach and why he did what he did. He seems like a good guy, even back then if you really paid attention in interviews he was likeable, but of course everyone likes to see the top dop taken down (so at the time I was pulling for RC when he come into 250s!)

Just….72 Supercross wins…🙏🤯. Just think about that for a moment. Seventy-Two👑 All done with style, grace, professionalism and a distinct lack of any malevolence. No one will ever equal what he did, I just don’t believe it’s possible.

My Mount Rushmore of childhood heroes was MC, JS7, RC and Reed...... over the years I've had a chance to meet them all a few times (Reed only 1x) and not a single one was a bad or awkward experience. Ricky was a lil more serious than the others lol, but all 4 were super down to earth and cool guys, who seemed much more appreciative than annoyed by the fans. So my advice just pick a moto dude as ur hero and u prob won't be disappointed 😂, 99% of em are super chill, awesome guys

Regarding Ducati wanting to build an MX bike I am reminded of Fiat CEO advice to Apple's CEO: 'If they have any urges to make a car, I'd advise them to lie down and wait until the feeling passes' I say this as the (ex) founder of ALTA Motors. The main reason? The total addressable market is very small and the engineering and racing investment is huge. On the other hand Ducati has breathed new life into the "win on Sunday buy on Monday" strategy.

I love it. McGrath is even totally into talking about Your racing even though it doesn't even compare to what he has done. I don't know much about McGrath just what I have seen here and there over the years. This has really made me see what a cool and humble dude he is.

As an Aussie watching Jeremy on all those fox and steel roots videos as a moto fan could only be compared to watching Michael Jordan. MC was a god! Japanese probably went aluminium frames because of the massive jumps from the videos?

I idolized Showtime in the 90's. Never had the tv guide so catching supercross on ESPN was hitting the lotto. I was in 8th grade 98-99. Jeremy had those pork chop side burns. 13yrs old I was shaving for those pork chops bro. I wanted them just like McGrath bro. I'd be walking home from school kids would shout from school buses passing by "Hey Elvis Presley"... Not even close kids not even close

Met Jeremy a bunch of times. First time was at Broome Tioga National. He was on the Peak team. We were 14 and young riders he was the coolest guy and hung out with us and talked racing. He stayed late just to hang out with us. Still have his signed jersey in a shadow box on my wall. He always took the time and was never the arrogant guy, some would say. Class act, and he changed the motocross world. He is the OG

Back in 1995, Jeremy parked right next to me while at an open practice at the old Starwest track in Perris, CA. He was super cool with me and my buddies. He sat and talked with us between his practice sessions and took pics with us. He is one of the friendliest racers I have met. He gave me a few riding tips and told me that I was the biggest rider he has ever met!

MC talking about choosing the best bike over money truly says a lot about his success as well ac RC. A lot of these dudes will switch teams for a big pay raise and then struggle with the new bike in the beginning (effectively wasting a year of their career chasing settings). Or even worse, they NEVER adjust to their new machine. With MC and RC, you can say they had no choice but to leave Honda because of their internal problems, which is different of course. But I think the ultimate goal for these riders should be to find the best bike to suit their style, not how much money will their bank accounts hold. I think that’s when you’re gonna see the best out of every rider. Look at Jett for example. Dude is ridiculously comfortable on the Honda because it suits his exact riding style. But guys like sexton and kroc struggled on that bike (with some ups along the way but mostly downs). And with Kenny back on Suzuki, he surely has that old spark in him again because that bike suits his style perfectly. Tomac on yamaha, Anderson to Kawi, barcia’s move to gas gas. These dudes all stepped up their game when they got on the exact bikes that suit their styles. End of my Ted talk. Thanks 😂

I raced enduros from 1998 to 2008 and looked up Gary Semics’ website back then, picking up some pointers. The biggest thing I took away was “positive inner feelings”, and I ran with it. No matter how race day looked, I charged 100% to get an edge on my competitors. Mental toughness. It served me well. 👍

Currently supercross/motocross riders are purely machines. I haven't really seen a rider with their own personality. Back in my day, Ricky Johnson, Bob Hannah, MC ect were creative and brought their own style to the sport. MC is still the pinnacle of what I think when someone says anything about a dirt bike. It's almost like these kids are so serious that there isn't an enjoyable moment or the sponsors won't let them be who they are. Yes they're most fit and fastest of any human on earth but is that what it's about now ?
