All common complaints toward speed cameras and roadworks aside, you can completely understand Jeremy's distaste for them. In 1994 (just before speed cameras were common place), he had to drive as fast as he could from London to Sheffield to say goodbye to his father before he died. Imagine trying to do something like that now. There's a large likelihood that you wouldn't make it.

My dad got a ticket for speeding when my mum went into labour with me for doing 40ish on a few 30 limits to get to the hospital (that used to be 40 back a few years prior). Wasn't an easy birth and had he adhered the the speed limit things wouldve gone a lot worse. Bunch of those roads are 20 limits now so if all this brainless speed reduction shit was as harsh as it is now 2 decades ago I or my mum might not have made it.

Every time they had a government representative on the show to talk about speed cameras and speed limits it becomes incredibly obvious they've never watched Top Gear. Jeremy had repeatedly brought up different studies and research statistics that disproved every single thing the government reps say. The government reps in this compilation all say something to the effect of "every study shows that speed cameras reduce accidents" despite constant evidence that accidents either remained constant or went up. Speed cameras exist for one reason and one reason alone, tax revenue. That is reason enough to get rid of them. Anything that is done for the sole purpose of stealing people's hard earned money is government endorsed extortion.

The thing that I'm curious about all of these studies is they say that accident figures remained the same, but it seems like they are talking about raw numbers? IE, that there are 3,200 accidents a year, or 25 fatalities, or whatever, but they never specify if that's normalized for the number of cars on the road. Over ten years you'd expect there to be some changes in how many people are driving, and the numbers are meaningless if you don't take that into account. Now maybe they have done, and Clarkson knows it wouldn't be good TV for him to sit there and go '3,200 accidents per 100,000 drivers' or whatever, because that isn't snappy, but it's hard to know

As an American, I gotta chastize the boys for being such goody two-shoes on our roads. More often than not, you can get away with going well over the speed limit, and only really have to worry about traffic flow, big cities, and small towns. While some areas do have speed cameras, most of the cameras out there are for simple monitoring for traffic alerts. Don't let the hall monitors scare you. Just pay attention, don't crash, and try not to be an arse. Except in Arkansas. Don't cock around in Arkansas. Although its good to see they found workarounds in later episodes.

Regarding speed cameras, in Australia radar detectors have been illegal for decades but since GPS's have come out, the newer ones have come with standard fixed camera warning & you could add mobile ones by pressing a button, but sometimes the camera had changed position by the time you got the warning. Recently my brother got a new Toyota Rav 4, I'm not sure if they have them in other country's, but the technology in this thing is phenomenal, one of the features is a live GPS unit that reports everything from accidents to speed traps, in real time. I'm sure this technology is available in other vehicles but it was like magic to me & as I was usually a passenger I could update new or old speed traps, accidents & road works & leave him to basically just steer the vehicle.

Infact I think all Ministers in certain jobs such as Defence, Food and Education should have first hand experience in those subjects as it will give them insight into what is actually needed for the department to work effectively. Listening to Ladyman make excuses makes me wonder if when you decided to become a Politician, is there a school you have to attend where they teach you how to avoid answering questions and how to make up excuses for everything so that the stupid policies you put in place can be seen as effective? The reason I ask is because whenever there's a Politician on TV being interviewed they do everything they can to avoid answering the questions they have no answer for that people will accept.

Meanwhile, here in the Midwestern United States, everyone does at least 5 miles an hour over the speed limit at all times. The only exceptions to this rule are little old ladies and people coming home from the bar. The former drive at least 5 miles under the speed limit, while the latter drive in the rightmost lane at exactly the speed limit.

I have to say, living in remote areas around Australia and seeing a constant and systematic reduction in speed limits, significantly increases many people's travel times. Due to the long distances people have to travel, it causes fatigue and is consequently dangerous for everyone on the road. Although, that being said, the speed limit was reduced outside my house from 80 to 60km/hr and we don't have any more accidents with people pulling out onto the road on blind corners.

Interstates are 65 once you get out into farmers territory. Throw in a 40 or 45 mph zone here and there, and you've basically got Oregon.

Here in Saudi Arabia they have upped the speed limit on intercity highways from 120 to 140 (Kmph). BUT, even with that, there is a concession of 10%. So basically you are good for 132kmph on a 120 Limit etc. The cameras are hidden, painted to match the background and are moved around every few days or so so you can never be sure of where they are. Sometimes its just a small tripod with a camera on it which is damn near impossible to see even after its flash goes off. Peraonally, I think the cameras here is a good thing because they have slightly tempered the entusiatic driving style of the locals. They dont fear death and drive +250kmph on the shoulder, tailgating and bullying other road users.
