This episode was made before the before the smart phones and the explosive growth of social media. In the 14 years that passed, we can text, talk, and video on the numerous platforms on phones, we can have access to the total human knowledge in the palm of our hands. Thanks to inflight wifi, we can literally do all that from anywhere in the world, even over vast oceans. I find it amusing that for years now, I have used my phone for everything, except making actual phone calls. It makes me wonder what the next 10 years are going to hold.

IIRC, he actually does cover that subject partially in one of the other episodes of this series. I want to say it was either the "Television" episode or the "Computer" episode, but I'm not positive. Both of those episodes are also here on KZread, probably even in the list of Suggested/Related Videos on the right side of your screen (assuming you're on a computer). If it isn't covered in either of those episodes, then it may actually be in an episode of a series James May did about the 20th century, but I'm almost positive that I remember hearing Jeremy's voice going over a short summary of the event.

The winner is the one who actually develops a working product people are willing to pay for. Almost every famous invention had multiple origins and the credited inventor usually worked with others. Whenever Antonio Meucci is discussed an of fashioned telephone is always shown, but in fact he created a speaker system for his house and not an actual working product. Likewise there were pervious versions of the telegraph but they weren't nearly as good as Samuel Morse's.

I agree that no matter who technically invented perfected the voice telephone it was Bell that had the knowhow and overall knowledge to bring it to the world. I also don’t blame Bell personally for his lawyers theft of Elisha Grays schematics although I do believe it likely happened. I really don’t put too much stock in the whole Antonio Meucci story as to much time had passed for this to be confirmed. That’s more trash history than anything else. These are just my opinions I entered the world of Telecom in 1991 and I’m now atheist Telecommunications Engineer for my local Government. I am mostly responsible for VOIP IPPBX communications now but I also provide integrated email and IM’ing. I have to say that verbal communication is without a doubt superior and should NEVER be abandoned for written text. I think that the reason that written text is so preferable these days is just another sign of moral breakdown and the lack of courage. I think that the internet, email and txt’ing has really hurt the world as it’s so impersonal. It’s really a cop-out way of communicating. Yeah sure “ will you grab some milk on your way home” is ok to say in a txt you should NEVER argue or attempt to have a serious conversation this way. People prefer to do it tho because they can be ten feet tall and bullet proof while txt’ing. Man-UP people! If you have something to say then just SAY IT!!

aaBeing socially shunned and isolated can lead to people developing some pretty intense emotions, but even disregarding that, it's not like the guy fully fleshed out the context of his actions/reasoning. Don't judge him for a situation you know next to nothing about. Also, the fact that he left that "apology" message is proof that he knows it wasn't an acceptable/normal reaction to whatever was being done to him. And he wasn't being "offended", he was being harassed/insulted/bullied (possibly even physically bullied as well). Sounds like what he did was just an excessive form of self-defense, which is a great example of why teasing people is just not acceptable behavior. You never know what the person on the other end is going through and, therefore, how hard they will take it.

Wait a minute, this doesn't make sense. When talking about Churchill's secret phone they said the germans could hear everything he said from a dutch listening station. They then said that the reason they were able to listen to his conversations was because all communication across the atlantic had to be done through radio. But they had just said that Churchill and the Americans were talking by phone. This doesn't make any sense. Was he speaking to the Americans by phone or by radio? If it were a phone, how could the Germans pick it up from radio signals? I'm probably just being thick but I found this whole part confusing.

No mention of Philipp Reis, who inventing crucial parts of the telephone, long before Bell and/or Gray. And invented the name „telephone“.

In America we grew up hearing about how it was Alexander Graham Bell who invented the telephone, we never heard of Elisha Grey. wow! this was all news to me. of course Bell had the great fortune that his name happened to be Bell and that we associate a telephone call with the ringing bells from a phone. the US telephone company for over 120 years was even called the Bell telephone company.

The phone / face test is flawed because he didn't deduct strictly from voice, which I assume was the point. He asked questions indirectly describing the person on the other end. A more accurate test would be having each person tell him the same thing.
