No matter how ill he looks and is, his voice is unmistakable.

Yes, he was ill at this time. But still you could hear every letter he said. Every word. That's a true actor. And a great one.

Jeremy Brett exemplifies the British stiff upper lip, to a large extent, I think, especially when he gloriously portrays the character of Sherlock Holmes!!

🤔, himself said : "Don't be too brave. Bravery is a fine thing on some occasions, but sometimes it can be quite a dangerous thing. The stiff upper lip is not always the best" Let's have in mind that he went through not usual difficulties from his childhood on : - his speech impediment causing a certain isolation - the rheumatic fever about which he said he had sensed the proximity of Death and that he had to face painful ordeals : - the unexpected and brutal lost of his beloved mother in his twenties - his early widowerhood. Therefore I think that the reasons why he came to this way of thinking are both most probably complex and understandable. For me, he was right : being disable by birth and having had lifelong others obstacles to a fulfilling developing, I'm of the opinion that it's meaningless, if not destructive, to put up a good show almost constantly if it is mainly in the intention or worry to make the good impression and to be accepted or to not bother the people we come across or live with. Besides, I think that we should be careful as to the real motives and ways we admire and appreciate prominent people who are rightly likeable but remain unapproachable to us : sometimes we claim that we know our close ones and are finally surprised to find that we didn't really, 🥴...

Even though he was obviously suffering whilst doing this the fact that he went through with it shows how much he loved his career and his fans

Agreed. His health wasn't good while filming some of his final episodes of Sherlock Holmes. The second actor to play Watson, Edward Hardwicke, asked why he was continuing to film them. Jeremy Brett replied that he didn't want to disappoint the fans of the series.

Jeremy is so short of breath and sweaty here, you can tell hes not a 100%. Love him though, and miss him lots.

Nevertheless, there was this sherlockian fire still burning in him, when he made that turnover around the chair and these exclamations. One of the favorite actors of my youth!

Как грустно видеть великолепного Джереми Бретта таким больным. Наверное, это его последняя роль. Но голос и интонации неизменно потрясающие! Интересно было бы посмотреть фильм целиком. А актриса-то - Келли из Санта-Барбары🙂

I have'nt seen this version. John Lynch, Jeremy Brett, so excellent actors in the film. I thought she did ok, not easy to do a Cockney accent without sounding music hall but she isnt forcing it here. Im a British Cockney and she's alright by me. Its a great story, I will watch it. Thanks.

Just watched an excellent Granada TV version of Moll Flanders starring Alexandra Kingston and Daniel Craig. It aired the same yr as this one - 1996. Truth is, Granada did a much better job! Turns out this version with JB does not follow the Dafoe novel. The whole script is totally made up, unfortunately!
