I owe a debt of gratitude to the Tanners for having a hand in saving my life. My only life would have been wasted on a lie, and they directly and indirectly by influence brought forth so much of the truth about the church that I found my way out. Thank you Sandra and Jerald.

Sandra Tanner is beloved by me, as Jerald was. She is NOT full of hate. When I spoke to her in SLC, I began to feel that if either of us was a "hater"... it was I. I will not entertain any negative suggestion that her motives are anything but the purest. Her ministry has never benefitted her in any material way. They were in danger, and if given the time, they would likely been in the cross-hairs of Mark Hofmann.

Such important historians, the Tanner's work is invaluable. They have saved many faithful believers mental health. Leaving 'the only truth you know' is emotionally destructive. And the only source of help, has been reading material from truth seekers. And then realizing 'I am not crazy, I was lied to!' Betrayal from a spouse, or friend is hard enough. Being betrayed by your religion is heartbreaking.

Im a Franco-mauritian. Living on a tiny island far away from America. I just stumbled across this channel and I'm finding it incredibly educational. If you can imagine someone who knows nothing about being a Mormon, how crazy the religion comes across if you try to explain it to someone who has never heard of it before. It's wild. I know this sounds incredibly ignorant but some people in the world do not have knowledge about Mormonism. It really sounds crazy that educated Adults believe all the chosen people landed up in Utah, America. I don't mean to offend anyone. Can you imagine listening from an outsiders perspective?? Anyway, I will continue to educate myself.

It is truly nonsensical. My family has a lot of mormon stories, beginning at the church's inception. My ancestors 7 generations ago bought into it early on; they were some of the first baptisms and formed the first congregation in New York, 1930. They have a street named after them in the most famous town the mormons built in Illinois. My maternal grandparents were born and raised in the polygamist mormon colonies of Mexico (1880s) because polygamy was illegal in the US. One of my grandfathers 5 generations back had 50 kids with 3 wives. He helped build several mormon towns in the mid 1800s...

@@parrotlover9035 That is very interesting. It is crazy how different parts of the world have different opinions and religions. My family, I can trace back around seven generations as well. Heavily influenced by the roman catholic religion here. My Great-grandfather even met the pope. People have this clear belief that what their family believes is the correct religion and the clear path but it's really just a matter of where you ended up being born and raised. I would love to visit America one day and learn about all the history.

An interesting podcast. I met Sandra Tanner once in 1992 when I showed up at the Utah Lighthouse Ministry unannounced to buy some of their material that they published. I was just barely off an LDS mission and she looked at me skeptically from behind her door. I probably looked like a Mormon spy to her, so I can understand her reaction. But she did sell me a few tracts and answered my questions, and she was polite. I initially became interested in her and Jerald after running into their positions about the church in my youth and saw their Mormonism: Shadow and Reality in my local library. I do remember in my childhood about the effects of Ed Decker and the Godmakers, Walter Martin and CRI, etc. When I was a kid in Orem these evangelicals would come around the neighborhood and throw their anti-Mo books on the driveway of the homes. Some of these books quoted the Tanners at length. I personally felt they were little more than thinly-veiled hate. When I was in New Zealand on a mission I had heard stories that in the 1980's whole congregations left the church in some places as a result. I would agree that their research was based on documents. I seem to remember that they had a microfilm company or something. The thing I didn't like about their books and pamphlets the most however was not their content or conclusions, but the annoying CAPTILIZATION in their format that appears throughout them in order to overemphasize a point. That got wearying. The other thing I recall about their work is the whole negative vibe it had to it. I realize that coming out and doing what they did that pointing out what they felt they needed to about the Church, it was probably unavoidable.

I often put myself in a believing Mormons shoes and pretend I'm hearing this info for the first time. I marvel at their ability to wrest the veracity of "truth" they think they have. Emotional alchemy at best; delusion at worst. Though we'll likely have access to the Tanners work for years to come, many people won't read, so to have the information on a platform such as MS, it's a great thing.

This was amazing and so eye opening! I remember in 1974 my great grandfather was a temple worker at the Salt Lake temple. He related how a patron had come to go to the temple and some of the workers had a weird feeling about this man. Long story short is apparently the man had negro blood (as he called it) and they wouldn't let him in.

'Crisis of Conscience' by Raymond Franz, a former Jehovah's Witnesses Governing Body member, wrote this account 3 years after his expulsion. It's an apostate classic. I haven't read it but have heard it's highly regarded. 'American Sermons: The Pilgrims to Martin Luther King Jr.' (Library of America) is great. 'Elusive Grace' by Rev. Dr. Scott Black Johnston is a splendid study of loving one's enemies while pursuing social justice. It's deep. I recommend these as well as 'A Short History of Atheism' by Gavin Hyman. ' L. Ron Hubbard, Messiah or Madman?' by Bent Corydon is another apostate book that's fine. Dr. Steven Hassan's (cult expert) books are good.

Around half go on to become nonbelievers with roughly 40% becoming straight atheist. IIRC of the other half that remain believers only around 30% become Christians. This doesn't mean the rest become Hindus or something. They just go on to become theistic non-denominationalists or some sort of rational deist. If you stick around in Mormon Stories, you'll fimd out that the current crop of ex-Mormons have included problems with the Bible itself in the mix, including things like Adam and Eve, Noah's flood, Second Isaiah, changes made to the four canonical gospels, and pseudepigrapha in the NT. This is why the more recent ex-Mormons are far more likely to drop out of organized religion altogether rather than follow the Tanners into Christianity.

The Tanner's book was one of the first anti Mormon books I read, back 40 years ago. I was given a pamphlet in which they quoted Joseph's boasting speech. It sounded horrible so I went to the library to look it up for myself. I was truly amazed how these people who called themselves Christian could lie so much. I learned a lot about understanding propaganda by reading their book.
