A very different vibe to my last post with two rock chicks together; here I have two big voiced American singers on one of the biggest songs of the era of big hair and oversized shoulder pads - the 1980's! 'The Power Of Love' was first recorded in 1984 by one of its co-writers - Jennifer Rush, and the song was HUGE around the world; including here in Australia where it made #1; and in Britain where it became the best selling single of 1985; the 9th highest for the entire decade, and the first woman to achieve a million selling single in that country! Quite incredulously, America didn't embrace their own songstress with 'The Power Of Love' not even cracking the Billboard Top 40.
Maybe it was because Jennifer was based in Germany, but despite a prolific recording career and major success in Europe and in Australasia, only one track bearing her name cracked the Billboard Top 40 - a duet with Elton John 'Flames of Paradise' which made #36 in 1987.
'The Power Of Love' has been famously covered many times since the original landed - most notably Air Supply's in 1985 (the same year it charted for Jennifer) and Celine Dion who recorded it in 1993. But I decided to pit another big voiced singer against the mighty Jennifer Rush - the late, and great Laura Branigan who could belt out the ballads as well as the dance and pop confections that made her a name around the world with hits such as 'Gloria', 'Self Control' and 'Solitaire' just to name a few. Laura recorded this classic in 1987 for her 'Touch' LP and it would become her final Top 40 outing, reaching #26 on the Billboard chart.
Pitting Laura and Jennifer feels like a fair fight, but i did consider throwing in Celine Dion, but apart from that being probably weighted towards the French Canadian, that would simply be too much power and too much power of love! So fellow youtubers, who wins this battle?

I must confess, I've never heard Laura Branigan sing this before. And I gotta say, WOW! She has beautiful high notes, and a growl in her voice that just grabs me. She's sings it like she owns it. Awesome.

Jennifer is warmer,sweeter and high enough. It gives you heart beating feeling of all age women, first love, girl friend, wife and mom. You can image a female human being that you can hug, you can kiss, keep close enough. Laura voice was kissed by God, it’s sound from heaven. I have to purify my soul when listening to this angel. I really appreciate being able to hear.

Jennifer Rush version is a performance. Laura's version is believable, raw emotion. She reaches down deep inside, grabs you and won't let go until she is ready.

In the Philippines during 80s,90s even now ,the veraion sound in the air wave is the veraion of Laura Branigan....and no doubt i like the timbre of the voice of Laura B. Ha s Husky 11:16 voice ,rocky....i like it.

Jennifer's version is great without a doubt. Laura's version is one of the best things I've ever heard. Nobody will ever sing the back half of this song anywhere near as passionately as Laura.

Well, I cannot even tell what it is that I don't like in Laura's voice! Every time she starts a note it sounds as if something is scratching inside her throat! 😮 Jennifer is flawless, the original (in 1984) and my overall favorite female singer in popular music (I have to state in contrast to classical music)! 😍

I admit that I heard Laura Branigan's version first and always thought it was a great song by a fantastic singer. After I heard Jennifer Rush's version I found that there was something about it that I liked better, maybe because she co-wrote it. Both singers have such powerful voices. Jennifer is my favorite with Laura a close second. Don't care nearly as much for any other versions of this great ballad.

I agree.
My own assessment; even though I adore Laura Branigan and she imbues a lot of emotion in her recording, there is something technically pure and simpler but more effective in Jennifer's version and she co-wrote it which often leans me towards the composer's versions. They both sing their hearts out.

Well she's gorgeous but Jennifer absolutely owns this one she just has the voice for it.
I cannot tell who is the best, but I can feel when it is Jennifer singing.
Jane Lloyd has it perfect from a month ago, Jennifer Rush by a mile and so much more, with amazing power and so much more ease, not a strained note to be heard. What a spectacular performer, as good as it can be.

I “missed” Jennifer in her prime-in fact, I only discovered her 2 months ago. I am a big fan of Celine and only discovered Jennifer because I came across Celine’s cover of POL including Jennifer. I couldn’t believe my ears. I’m 84 and have heard them all, from Ginger Rogers to Edith Piaf to Vera Lynn. Then Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, Barbara Streisand, Dusty Springfield, Tammy Wynette, and Bonnie Tyler. Add Gloria Gaynor, Connie Francis, Lauren Branagh, Linda Ronstadt, Rita Coolidge, Celine, Mariah, and Whitney and you have the lineup of the greats right up to Adele and Susan Boyle. But, Jennifer Rush has the all-around best female voice I have ever heard. Her operatic training adds an unmatched vibrato containing depth and texture. And she sings everything: opera, pop, rock, and ballads in English, Spanish, German, and Hungarian. She has written or co-written the lyrics and music for many of her songs, done duets with Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras, Elton John, and Brian May-sorry-Sir Brian May-and performed live all over the world-but not in America, except in March and April 1986 on the Carson show and the Dick Clark Show; that’s it. Yes. If Jennifer had decided to live her life in the US, she would still be in Las Vegas or on tour. It would be great if you reacted to 3 more of my favorites: “Who Wants to Live Forever?”, “Hero of a Fool”, and “Stronghold”.

@@jadezee6316 Hiya! Last time I looked, Whitney Houston and Dianna Ross were African American; also were Aretha Franklin, Gloria Gaynor, Roberta Flack, and Mariah Carey. Ella was a tremendous singer in the jazz niche. I loved Etta James but here again, her scope was narrow, as was that of Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday, and Sarah Vaughan. By the way, you left out Nicole Simone, Dionne Warwick, Lena Horne, Donna Summer, Gladys Knight, Nancy Wilson, and a number of excellent voices from the days of Fats Waller, Wilbert Harrison, Slim Gaillard, Bo Diddley, etc. Yes, I heard them all many times, but Black or white, we’re talking here about the best all-around singer. All-around includes writing or co-writing some of your songs, a Guinness World Record, singing everything from blues to opera, singing and writing songs in different languages, range, texture, expression, emotion, earthiness-on occasion, sexiness-and on and on. When you check all the boxes, only one remains: Jennifer Rush. Cheers!

@@jadezee6316 Then the question rises: What do you know about singing? As far as I know Jennifer had had an opera singer education. That makes a more polished voice with almost no weaknesses. Weaknesses you can clearly hear in Laura's version (like something is scratching her throat when she sings)! I totally agre with @janelloyd4332 Jennifer really owns this song (not only because she co-wrote it) but also did she perform far better than anybody who tried this song!
