Jennifer Holliday-Move-Dreamgirls part 1
Ойын-сауық
Well, here it is.The first time we ever really saw Jennifer Holliday on a Broadway stage and got blown away by that voice.....that voice. Here she is at The Imperial Theater in, I'd say, early 1982 along with the original cast( Sheryl Lee Ralph;Lortta Devine....) It was the same Year and Theater I saw the show, and it was nothing short of life-altering. I have always said that after seeing Jennifer Holliday in Dreamgirls that year, I knew there was a God.After viewing these selections(I'm putting out a few of them) you'll quickly see why these performances made history and solidified Jennifer Holliday as the Queen of Broadway..The video is a little shakey and is amatuer, but I ran the audio through my studio, and enhanced it quite a bit.So hopefully you can lose yourself and enjoy this show with this sophisticated Broadway audience.

THEN SHAT UP!! no one can deliver that line like her!
No Lorrell has yet to equal her. No one can hit the notes she hit without straining and no casting director has bothered to try find one who could. Loretta Devine- unmatched.
I was lucky enough to see Dreamgirls in August of 1982. Phylicia Ayers-Allen later Phylicia Rashad played the roll of Deena Jones the night that I saw it. This show blew me away, especially the performance of Jennifer Holiday. I was even lucky enough to see her and get an autograph at the stage door. She actually walked out with the legendary Maurice White, who produced her first album.

+Terray Wynter - Yes, Terray, Sheryl Lee Ralph originated the role of Deena, but by the time I saw the play Sheryl Lee Ralph had left the show and Phylicia Rashad, who was Phylicia Ayers-Allen at the time, was playing the role of Deena Jones.

Wanda T phylicia was Sheryl Lee Ralph's understudy in the original Broadway play
I am so lucky I got to see Jennifer and this show as a kid, numerous times, with amazing casts. The set and visual direction was genius. American Theater History. Michael Bennett.
Personally I think they recreated this into a movie really well, and this Jennifer Hudson didn't disappoint. And it's hard to stand up to the original. Go her! And go Jennifer Holiday for being awesome!
I saw the original production on Broadway at age 16. Anyone...ANYONE...who saw that production could not leave that theater without being forever changed by it. It really was a magical night. I can still remember being speechless at intermission, standing against the wall in the orchestra section (got my single ticket through TKTS for $27.50 on a rainy Monday night) and it wasn't until seeing "Hamilton" in Chicago that I had a similar feeling/reaction. Live theatre...my lifelong appreciation for it was sparked by "DREAMGIRLS" and I have had a 40 year love affair since.
I like how the movie stayed true to these songs..they're absolutely timeless
That's what you call acting and SANGING! Gentleman: What's the name of your group? Deena (Sheryl Lee Ralph): The Dream-ettes The Dream-Ettes! Effie (Jennifer Holiday): Y'all I can't wear this wig,,,this dress doesn't fit me!! Lorrell (Loretta Divine): You got the same Wig I got? Effie: Yeah Lorrell: You got the same dress I got? Effie: Yeah Lorrell: Then SHUT UP! Announcer: Ladies and Gentlemen straight from Chicago the Creamettes. Effie: It's the Dreamettes the Dreamettes!
I like how the movie stayed true to these songs
Thank God somebody had sense to record this classic ORIGINAL cast back then! #yjj
I sometimes work with a choreographer/ friend, who was in the original Broadway cast! I love the stories she tells me!
I want to watch the whole thing
Dreamgirls was Jennifer Holliday's second show on Broadway. In 1980 she was featured in Your Arms Too Short to Box with God and was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for her performance.
I sure would like to see this on DVD in its entirety.

Good luck. I've been searching for this performance or LA cast with Linda L. I've seen the KZread upload but it's old VHS (I appreciate it don't get me wrong), but I would love to find the DVD. I can't even find it on Ebay.
It's about time someone posted the original MOVE. Thank You so much. I hate that this show was never properly recorded and distributed.
Thank you for this wonderful bit of theatric and musical history!
Amazing! Thanks for posting this :)
Loving this. Post some more if you can.
Thank you sooooooo much! i love it!
This role was originally written for Nell Carter, but when Nell go the call from Hollywood to star in of all things, A SOAP OPERA, she left NYC and made it to Hollywood. Joe Papp and Michael Bennett looked all over, but it wasn't until one of the co-stars of A Chorus Line flew down to Texas to hear this unknown sing in a performance. I can't remember the actor's name, but he paid for Jennifer's Plane ticket to audition for Your Arms Are Too Short to Box with God. SHe was discovered in that show.
Wow, cameras in 1982 really sucked!!!

+Sharon Odak Don't blame the cameras of the day--which could film in much higher quality than most of us think--blame the degradation of video quality when compression is applied in order to make its size easily manageable and also degradation of the film print itself over time. Not to mention the proliferation of copies of copies of the master tape, most of which were generated within the last decade or so by peeps who don't know the first thing about video compression technologies!1!!1 lol.

Be thankful it was recorded at all. Video recordings of the original cast are ultra rare.

No they didn’t I think this person was using a older camera because I’ve seen bootlegs from the 60s with way better quality so I’m just figuring there using a older and lower quality camera.
Michael Jackson, after seeing the show, said it was the best sing he had ever seen.
thank u thank u
@gtb224 It's her this is the original...Jennifer Holliday, Sheryl Lee Ralph & Loretta Devine

+Jeff Montero This performance is part of a full one that has been posted on here for some time now in its entirety and in MUCH better quality. Just search for "Dreamgirls Full" and it should be the first result that comes up. The one posted here is not the archived version shot for Lincoln Center library. I believe this was filmed by a cast member who had set up a camera in the balcony. Not sure if that's a fact, since you can obviously see the camera moving and if it was done by a cast member, then what was he doing off that stage, lol.

If you live in New York you can go see the original production at the library for the performing arts. I saw it there this summer. It's a high quality profesional recording. The original cast is there except Ben Harney and Jennifer. Roz Ryan who played Effie was great though.
Is there any way you could post some of it? Or even sell me a copy.
how do u watch the actual play?
Well ... think about this... if you dont like this ... then you cant liek the new one... coz with out this ... there would be no new one :D
woooooow, that's an old video. cool though.
is the condition better than thiS?
hi there yes i do(i have the whole play)... i sell it through paypal...contact me if ur interested
where and with who
i like the new one better too
Why wouldn't it be?
I've always thought it was so silly that Broadway producers refused to professionally film the original casts. 😐
I think it's be cause she says "Tatanic" to make it rhyme withe Satanic.
