JENKEM - Behind New Jersey's D.I.Y. Haven
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Filmed By: Sean Colello
Edited By: Sam Fickinger
We drove over to New Jersey and talked to one of the builders behind Shorty’s - one of the biggest and most recognizable D.I.Y. spots on the east coast. Created by a bunch of skateboarders and friends that live in a bootleg skate house nearby, what started as a couple of obstacles in a empty warehouse down the street in 2011 has since become a full blown park.

people like him keep skateboarding alive for the true skaters
In case anyone was wondering, this place is vaporized. As if it was never there. Drove by the other day and the entire lot is now filled with shipping containers. Heartbreaking.. RIP...

Him and a group are doing it again just like he said he would if it got demolished. Its in a shipping area location closed off
andrew: there's ENDLESS amounts of abandoned buildings, idk why more people don't do it also andrew: shit happens... guy got shot in the face over there 6 months ago, middle of the day
I've filmed this place in 2014.. I was delivering a load and needed somewhere to park afterwards. I started seeing parents dropping their kids off to this abandoned building. All the kids had skateboards in their hands. Me being from NY, I asked them could I come inside and film them..Kids said kool , Not a problem.. Amazing place..

Parents definitely were not dropping their “kids” off in downtown Newark at an abandoned building
I'm not a skater but I did BMX back in the day. I really appreciate these guys turning nothing into something just driven by a "screw it, why not" attitude.... I can stand behind that mentality. That's how you get barren concrete jungles transformed into cool hangout spots... just guys wanting a sick spot to skate at. And like he says, you can't really appreciate it the same way unless you were one of the 50 guys actually sitting there forming concrete at midnight in freezing weather. Super cool.... it's a shame places like this are suddenly being demolished, after years (or decades) of being left alone.
Love that dude's attitude.

I miss the warehouse park me and a bunch of homies built back in the day...NJ represent!
God bless these men. They are pioneers. Good men.
The world needs more people like this that use abandoned buildings and transform it in to skatepark
Me and my friends used to sneak into an abandoned warehouse that had pallets plywood and filing cabinets. It got torn down a few years ago
Any updates on this homie? Is he still good? Love these segments.
Hell yah dude!! This guy is awesome and built a sweet ass park.
epic! thank you!
good stuff 👍
Man what a beautiful place.
I used to help build and skate an old mini golf course in Buffalo that was completely over grown and behind a grocery store. At its peak all the mini pools had extensions and stuff. It was awesome. It was in one of the most sketchy places though. A lot of people used to use there. I once saw a guy that seemed sober and he was with this dude high off his ass. The dude just fell straight on his face in glass without putting his hand out or anything. The sober dude did nothing. Just looked me in the eyes and lit a cigarette. I thought to my self “ If I make any facial expression I might be dead”
I get how he feels, me and a few of my buddies had a little skatepark on an abandoned tennis court but then a bunch of kids blew the spot up. So much work for nothing
Anyone know about this guy and his scene? do they have a vimeo or Instagram lol?
beautiful sentence to end on
New York City would be wise to encourage its countercultures.
Respect
Fred Gall he's the man
Wish i could find a place like that to live. Lol like no joke. I'd be more comfortable there than most places. Especially with a skate park in it
i been here 2 years ago it was still there but now when i drive by it looks like it got shut down

If I’m not mistaken I think The city of Newark tore it down after street league plastered pros skating it on the Jumbotron at super crown (prudential center) in 2013 or 2014 I forget which year

But i know of a spot in the woods off the side of the highway in north jersey , in like some old building I guess they forgot to knock down after building the highway , I’ll ask if the builders mind me telling since they have so many other spots
It’s been 4 years, he still living there?
@ekola1

It's been torn down since
Fuck yeah
Last questions answer, they are too lazy or think that it comes from nowhere haha. It’s hard work cleaning up and claiming a spot for skateboarding. I hope i can get to that scale someday
So that guy lived there for at least 5 years with no heat or electricity and people were shooting people in the face? That's pretty bad ass.

I know the building is gone, we need an update on Andrew
Motorcycles probably forced them to have to take it down
I do it from Boston
I had a best rents abonded ware hiuse and we made soo many ramps and ciol skate obstacles until the cops ran us out for vandalism
The city of newark new about the spot they left it alone cause no harm no foul the property was purchased that's a valuable industrial area that was the only building not building in the area not being used.
I built a skatepark in this abdonded building and we where doing this for 2 months and this was our life staying up till 5 am planing it and where the next slappy rail is gonna go then one day like 15 cops pull up and say nect time they see us here they will arrest us for trespassing
I can't believe this spot nearly got taken down
