JELLYFISH STING that causes an IMPENDING SENSE OF DOOM !! ft. Irukandji

The Irukandji Jellyfish has one of the most painful venomous bites of any creature and, as if that WASN’T ENOUGH, victims also experience an IMPENDING SENSE OF DOOM - they feel like they are going to die! But there are lots of different jellyfish in Australia so Jack visits the Lifeguard Hoppo from the Bondi Beach Lifesavers (as seen in the TV show Bondi Rescue!) to find out how to tell them apart, which one's could be deadly, and which one's could in fact just cause a mild sting…
Australia’s lifeguards are known all over the world for keeping Australian’s safe from the deadly creatures living in the waters. Always be careful when swimming in the sea; If in Australia, make sure to swim between the red and yellow flags; and do not swim in areas sign-posted as dangerous.

Yeah, I got stung. i think it was not the full delivery, as I had no pain. It was a day trip to the reef, and it began on the boat trip back. "Impending doom", said it all. I just knew the boat was going to sink and we would all die. I desperately wanted to jump over the side to escape the calamity that I just knew was about to happen. Then the horrible knowledge that this feeling wasn't going away when we reached shore. The incredible feeling of impending doom lasted for about three days before it started to lift. Highly suicidal. The worst part was that we had no idea what was happening to me. I think it was early days of knowledge about this (30 years ago). I will never forget it!

@@tw8464 I didn't know enough to seek medical help. I thought it was just me... going mad. Or something. We were staying in a camping ground in a tent (wife and son), and we had a severe lightning storm; I just stood outside, willing the lightning to get me. My wife asked my son to keep an eye on me when I went to the showers / toilets, for fear of suicide. There was absolutely no way I could travel in the car. My wife rang friends to pray. We knew of nothing else to do. I think if I had known that it would end after a few days, it would have been somewhat bearable. It was hell. Suffice to say, I now understand a little, what severe unfounded paranoia is like.

While I appreciate the humour in this comment, the missing factor is frequency (or likelihood), which is rare (or low). Hence when it happens it is a shock to the locals and is quickly highlighted in the press. If other australian hazards were also judged on their likelihood, one would never drive or eat high cholesterol food. That is not to say that the press is not valuable in reminding locals of the inherent risk.

There are different types of pain or maybe it could different sensations of pain. From my own experience there's broken bones which have a deep throbbing ache. The hammer your fingers or stub your toe which gives a burst of words and gradually subsides. The achy muscle pain from overuse. Then the 2 worst: 1.The sinus surgery to fix broken septum in your sinuses. The surgeon uses a chisel and hammer to break off deformed bone pieces. You will feel like your sensitive sinus bones were hammered on. Only a higher dose of hydrocodone can tamp down the pain. I will NEVER have sinus surgery unless its necessary. Plastic surgery for looks....you will regret it I guarantee. 2.Burning & stinging from the spinal cord & branches coming out thru the vertebrae. At least an 8 to bordering on 9. Usually caused by arthritis and the roughness it makes on bone joints. Those big nerves hate to be irritated and they send their anger all the way down to the toes. I'll take several broken arms or legs any day over this misery. Arthritis doesn't go away so the burning/stinging goes on 24/7. Only surgery to remove the roughness or a nerve cutting procedure will help. Problem is the actual problem site doesn't show up on MRI very well. Only by finding a super skilled surgeon who is familiar with proper diagnosis and surgical technique will you find relief.

Blue bottles are not extremely painful. Although the venom is strong, the stings are very superficial, so it’s tolerable.

I guess the blue bottles are what Americans call the Portuguese man o'wars. Why Portuguese? Don't know. I once walloped one with my shoe on the beach in Florida. It popped and a bit landed on my arm. It didn't cause much pain but for a while my arm started feeling numb. Years later I was swimming and a tentacle got me. It felt like someone had whipped my leg with a branch of a rose bush. Fearing paralysis I swam out. Nothing more happened and I went hone and emailed my friends a picture of the line of about 5 stings.

Mantita Tech that’s is 100% incorrect. A quick google search will show you that irukandji is considered the most venomous animal on the planet. More venomous than a regular box jelly by FAR. But box jellies kill more often because of their size. Seriously I’m not trying to debate look it up. Irukandji are way way more venomous. Also if you Study that right, a sub species is still that species. It simply has other characteristics. That’s like saying a bengal and Siberian aren’t both tigers. The bengal and Siberian tigers are sub species of tigers. So once again, irukandji are box jellyfish. Though a sub species, still a box jellyfish with way more potent venom.

I love the watch and so decided to look up the Irukandji jellyfish and found your video. Great video. I love the watch and even more now I know the story of this tough little jellyfish so thank you. understood Alexander, you could say the bluebottle technically isn't a true jellyfish, which isn't a scientific term, it is a colloquial, common term. All the species in the episode are in the subphylum Medusozoa. We will make a new video featuring all these in the group and the differences between them. Thanks, Jack
