Jellyfish Can't Swim In The Night Has Endless Potential

Фильм және анимация

Jellyfish Can't Swim At Night is well-directed according to folks like me...but what does that mean exactly? What is the Doga Kobo team, and director Ryouhei Takeshita, doing to make this story so standout even just on the first episode? A lot and in ways that we don't often see in the medium too which makes me really excited to talk about it. So let's chat about direction, specifically shot types, setting matches, a little bit about transitions and focus, and hopefully get to the heart of why Jellyfish has endless potential. And why, please someone explain to me, why I lose my mind every time an anime makes a train have symbolism.

Just based on personal bias it’s definitely the new Spice and Wolf, the original being one of my all-time favourites, but in terms of completely new shows it’s got to be Jellyfish, like you said, that first episode was extremely impressive so I’m really glad you decided to make a video about it! Also, apparently all 12 episodes are finished already so there’s a good chance it’s not gonna crash and burn which I would certainly appreciate.

Train to the End of the World also looks great, and has great potential. the 'post apocalyptic journey' sub-genre has a lot of bangers to begin with, and the surrealistic apocalypse in this one has particular potential. Some of the imagery in the opening reminds me of Paprika or even Annihilation. There's ominous hints, and something that is...not exactly a death flag, but a curse hanging over all our heroines. the juxtaposition of their youthful naive enthusiasm and the encroaching darkness of a surrealistic hellscape world has so many possibilities. The second episode visually references the train scene from Spirited Away pretty obviously, and I think in general Spirited Away has a strong visual and thematic influence on the show. A Salad Bowl of Eccentrics is nothing that special from a directorial/visual perspective, though the character designs are really charming, but it's playing in the same comedic territory as Hinamatsuri. even 'we have Hinamatsuri at home' is a cut above most anime comedy, and it's also kind of a nice touch that it's allowed to explicitly, repeatedly reference Detective Conan. when I compare it to Hinamatsuri it's not just the kind of twisted humor, but also that the second lead girl ends up homeless, repeatedly. It actually milks a lot of value out of the 'fish out of water' dynamic of people from a fantasy world in our own world, so it also has that season 1 Devil is a Part-Timer vibe. Mysterious Disappearances hasn't quite done justice to the manga with its first episode, but I still feel like it's going to be pretty good on the strength of the characters, and the vocal casting for the lead pair is fantastic. Ai Farouz finally getting to voice a character that isn't either in goblin mode or an ojou-sama, lol. some people will be too put off by the 'fanservice', but look, people have got so hot and bothered about shows leering over high school girls that they can't tolerate adult nudity. I'm just appreciating the camera lovingly observing a THICC adult woman for a change. that's real culture. also she got the tanuki eyebrows, and she's an adult fail-girl who feels like she fell off after high school. best girl forever. Go! Go! Loser Ranger! can be described as a genre deconstruction of super sentai focused on a mook who has Had Enough of being a public punching bag for the supposed heroes. the first episode is entirely set up, but it's well-directed with some genuinely impressive effects and it fully commits to the bit, so I'm excited to see where it goes. Kaiju No. 8's premiere episode was shockingly great, really atmospheric and with great background art, a banging soundtrack, and efficient characterization. obviously I'm onboard Spice and Wolf, I do have qualms about the character designs, but a lot of the background art and animation is superb, and the soundtrack is GREAT. and the pacing's less glacial feeling than the first series. I gotta watch whatever material is in between season 2 and 3 of Sound! Euphonium before I can start season 3, but I've been dragging my ass because I'm still bitter about the needless yuri baiting. also: worth noting that apparently Jellyfish has all its episodes already completed and ready to air. which is no small thing in the anime industry

I just can't help but notice the blue oni/red oni... once again. In their casual outfits, Mahiru is dressed in red and she's going with the flow of things, where as Kano is dressed in blue and appears almost distant. However, in their costumes, they show more of their true sides; Mahiru is now blue, being constantly unsure of herself even when picking the outfits, leading to her ending up with that one in the first place, and having given up on her talent, making her fairly gloomy character beneath the surface. Kano meanwhile gets the red outfit, because she takes action, and can be quite lively despite her initial appearance of having given up.

The direction on this episode blew me away. It’s just so good. The only other episode I’ve see by this director is the Yuri Hell one on Flip Flappers, which might be the best one on that (incredible creative) series. And to keep praising this incredible direction. My favorite thing is how quickly it establishes characters, settings, pasts, desires and how neatly it ties all that together in what feels like two soulmates falling in love at first sight.

Is it a stretch if this show really reminds me of lycoris recoil? like the execution, the plot directions, and the characters, really make me feel like a dejavu? the way both shows instantly made me fall in love with the overall show!

I went into the first episode with no major expectations one way or the other, but ended up being really invested. My focus is more story, so I won't notice the directorial choices, etc., you mention, but watching this video I can see they how they would have contributed to my enjoyment of the show, even if on a largely "subliminal" level. Now I kind of want to watch the 1st episode again and really take it all in, that's how much I love it already. I feel like we see lots of shows predicated on the idea of dreams, but I genuinely think this one could be unique.

Fantastic premiere that sets up the series themes in a single episode, it might have a little too much symbolism as a whole but with this direction this strong and dynamic, that's a only a nitpick and I'm looking forward to more. Thanks for the video going over the little details.

Liked it a lot glad you also enjoyed it so far!. Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night and Train to the End of the World are my favourite non-sequel shows. Also looking forward to Kaijuu No. 8 as my action show for this seaseon but that's only one episode so far. Also took me almost 5 min to realize that the BGM was from VA-11 HALL-A when I heard Safe Haven feeling like Jill is talking to Fore again while I read the lore on the articles.

I think it's amazing that we have 3 Cute Girls Doing Music anime airing this season, and they're all great so far. My ranks are Jellyfish Can't Swim at Night as number 1, Girls Band Cry as second, and Whisper You a Love Song at third. I know, I know, the full CG show of Girls Band Cry as number 2 you ask incredulously. But it's solid 3D animation, almost on par with Studio Orange. If you liked Jellyfish, I highly recommend you give Girls Band Cry a shot.

Time Traveller here: Show kind of dropped the ball in the second half, and also Episode 7 kind of cemented the show as a bit gross and not so innocent. It's a shame because I absolutely agree with the video and the potential of the show from the outset, and was rooting for it across the season! It does do some great things directorially and starts as very genuine, but feels rushed (and hence, inauthentic) towards the end. The actual direction and visuals don't really diminish across the season though, just the storytelling and characters. It's still a good show, but not an anime of the season, let alone the year. Girl's Band Cry, however, I think delivered on the potential this show didn't.

Who specifically are we talking about here? Haven't really looked into the staff at all yet so I'm not yet aware of any controversies. Worth noting that being a creep doesn't necessarily mean that they can't make their child characters compelling. Made in Abyss and the Monogatari series, for example, have some really creepy stuff while being very well written and, especially in monogatari's case, their child characters are some of the most compelling I've seen.
