Jegs English Wheel Unboxing, Setup, and Initial Impressions…and…Oh Yeah! We Moved!!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Hello, folks, and welcome back to the channel!
So, basically, I fell asleep at the beach 6 months ago, and woke up way out here in the middle of the desert. Ok, that might be a slight embellishment, but I DID move way out in the desert, and, while I hesitate to declare that “I’m back” just yet, I DID make a new video…and I’m going to try REALLY hard to make another one next week, too. :)
This week, I’ll show you my latest tool purchase, and in great detail. It’s an #EnglishWheel kit from the fine folks at Jegs! It’s good some good points, and it’s got some not so good points. So sit down, crack open your favorite beverage, and let me show you what to expect if YOU decide to purchase this same tool.
I hope you all enjoy this week’s episode! Please don’t forget to hit that “LIKE” button, and “SUBSCRIBE” to the channel and hit that notification bell if you like what you see, and want to see more videos like this! Also, hit me up in the comments section to let me know what you think of this video, about the project on a whole, and to tell me what YOU want to see more of in future videos.

    Thanks John! While I find some of the Chinese manufacturing short-comings to be quite frustrating, it’s nice to have quality service from an American company like Jegs to fall back on. They certainly don’t deserve “bashing”, even if their product requires some fine-tuning. I appreciate your comment, and I look forward to sharing my projects with you.

    Wow,a new video! Good to hear from you. I guess those cheaper tools have always some issues, like that beadroller. I think my next tool investment, what ever that will be, may be something pricier. I am kind of had enought with these cheaper ones, there is always some quality issues or other crap like that. Well, the beadroller looks good and so does your new garage. Give us a shop tour at some point?

    That would be the way to do it, Scott! I’m now into this tool well over $400, and the anvils lie somewhere between disappointing and useless. But, it’s also a lot harder to buy that same Harbor Freight wheel for $200, anymore…

    I actually watched your video prior to pulling the trigger on this one, Larry. I probably should have left a comment on it. 😂 I’m glad to hear the run out is somewhat inconsequential. Hey, I had a minor freak out about a month ago, because I thought I had lost that box of rivets in the move. I DID find it however. I hadn’t yet opened it, because I wanted to do it on film for my first Bomber Seat video, but this time curiosity got the better of me. The note inside said Merry Christmas, so, holy crap, it’s been a year!? Anyway, I haven’t forgotten about you. I’ve been slowly refining these seats in my head, and I’ve been very hesitant to take a sophomoric effort at the raw material. I’m sure I’m going to screw stuff up because of the learning curve involved, but since Frank Wallic quit making seats, I want to have all my ducks in a row, and hopefully take a crack at mass producing these seats. I bit of a “secret” I’ve been harboring, is that I’m adding CNC Plasma to my workshop, and while it might sort of be cheating, I want to transfer my patterns to CAD, and hopefully be able to cutout and “pick” all of the rivet locations with the plasma table, as that is the only way I think I will be able to make these in an amount of time commensurate with being able to sell them at a reasonable price when finished. Anyway, that’s all my very long winded way of saying that the seat build is still coming. It’s honestly the project on my horizon that I am most excited about! Thanks for the support, and I will be in touch soon! Casey

    @@crazycaseyscustoms Great to hear from ya. I had a local opportunity to buy a real deal English Wheel locally....I live in a "cool stuff" deficient area.... I passed on it. I'm comfortable with my wheels output but like everything...it's subjective how close makes you happy. One thing I may offer to your bomber seat plans is that my local recycler gets old copper sheet material dropped off. Copper is a cool add to these old cars. Hope all goes well. Thanks, @@BoxcarsGarage. I’m trying to find my (new) local recycler. Interestingly enough, recycling of any kind doesn’t really seem to have caught on in Northern Nevada. Our local dump charges the same amount whether you’re dumping food scraps, or scrap metal. It’s really odd.

    So Casey… what’s the final resolve concerning the anvils being out? I just ordered one these Jeg’s English Wheels before seeing your post about the runout. I’m hoping for a better set of anvils than you received. Oddly, this English wheel was shipped from Mittler Bros. I guess they import the unit from China and are distributors.

  • @crazycaseyscustoms

    @crazycaseyscustoms

    8 ай бұрын

    Interesting regarding the unit coming from Mitler Bros. now. That bodes well for the quality you should hopefully receive. Regarding the anvils, I’m afraid you DO notice the runout when you’re working a panel, and the 0.005” runout I mention in the video was actually on one of my best anvils; my low crown (which I use the most) is actually about twice that bad, and like I said, you really do notice it. Though, with that said, I haven’t replaced or fixed these yet, so, it’s livable with my current skill set, anyway. Let’s cross our fingers that your anvils are better than mine; it sounded like from talking to Jegs customer support that they were trying to have a better quality anvil set coming in their future kits, and this video is about a year old now. And if you do end up with some excess runout in your anvils, you may consider looking into “flat spot anvils”, and potentially make a set out of yours. That would be a lot less daunting than trying to reprofile the whole radius; and that’s what I will likely do with mine, if I ever get good enough to notice that these are holding me back. Thanks for the comment! Cheers, Casey

  • @crazycaseyscustoms

    I believe so. My understanding is that the wheel with the curved frame is an older design that nobody sells anymore. In reality, this wheel is working pretty good; I don’t know if you saw my bomber seat video, but I did the roll in the seat bases with it.

  • @jessehenry9152

    @jessehenry9152

    I have not seen that, but I'll check it out. Jegs still shows the curved style in their listing. This video and one review I found said they got this style which I prefer. Anything I buy I go ahead and expect it to be junk and need modifications. So far with those expectations I have only been disappointed once, and that's because they didn't send me anything! Did you true up the wheels or does the frame flex enough that it absorbs it somewhat?

    It doesn’t seem to be much of an issue, but I’ve found my forming band rolls off the side of the upper anvil, which is annoying, and I think where true could have something to do with it… @@jessehenry9152
