A note from Lawrence:
Jeffrey Sachs was the youngest tenured professor in Harvard’s history when he was promoted only a few years after receiving his PhD. And for good reason. He is one of the most remarkable intellects I know. I have always been amazed and the breadth of his reading and knowledge, and when I give him one of my physics books, he reads it in a day, and comes back with great questions.
Jeffrey has not been content to stay within the confines of academia, and for 17 years served as a senior advisor to the head of the UN, and has worked, sometimes controversially, with numerous governments to help them out of economic hardships. His interest in world affairs has caused him to write a great deal about power politics, global conflict, and diplomacy, and I wanted to sit down and talk to him about two conflicts about which he has written recently, Ukraine and Gaza.
But first, we talked about his own career, his interest in economics, and also his thoughts about the UN, an agency which of late has dropped considerably in my own estimation.
I agree strongly with Jeffrey that only diplomatic solutions to military conflicts have any hope of lasting, and that nationalist politics that sustain military adventurism inevitably only causes the people within both warring countries undue hardship. But how to extricate countries from the cycle of violence is a difficult challenge, and Jeffrey doesn’t mince words in that regard. I have to say that I agree with him wholeheartedly about Ukraine. Not as completely on the Middle East, though our disagreements are subtle. We both agree that a two state solution in the middle east is essential, and detest many policies of the current Israeli government, especially on the west bank (although no more than I think we both detest the policies of the terrorist lunatics governing Gaza, who seem intent on inflicting as much or more hardship on their own populace as any external government does, most often to score political points on the world scene) I am less sanguine about the likelihood that UN troops and Arab nations could or would realistically and fairly implement and police such a situation, but I sympathize with his views that the UN may be the last resort.
I expect I may read some angry feedback about some of Jeffrey’s suggestions, but once again, reasoned discussion, especially about disagreements, is essential if we are to make progress, in science, and in the real world. As a result I feel particularly lucky to have people like Jeffrey to have such discussions with. I hope you are as stimulated and educated by the discussion as I always am when I talk to him.

His extensive knowledge and commitment to global diplomacy and economic solutions are truly inspiring. The topics covered in this video - from conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza to global diplomacy - are of immense significance to the global community. Lawrence Krauss, your interview with Jeffrey Sachs not only showcases his impressive career and contributions to economics but also his unwavering dedication to finding sustainable solutions through diplomatic means. This is a much-needed call for reason in a time when military confrontations often take center stage. The open and respectful nature of the discussion, even in the face of disagreements, underscores the importance of clear and analytical approaches to solving global issues. Sachs is a voice of reason who should at the very least be listened too and make one think a little deeper about their positions. I had much of my notions or positions challenged over the years. It’s quite liberating when you aren’t formulating opinions based solely on what is being touted by one political party, the state department, Fox News, or CNN etc. listen to alternative views and start to think critically! Anyways, looking forward to listening! I’ll be watching Sachs conversation with Tucker Carlson next.

Wow. Ive listened to a lot of Jeff S but I have never heard his back story. It’s very interesting and important to hear. I have been on a journey or a quest rather that started by asking similar questions as Jeff. I feel like my pursuit of knowledge is me trying to answer a few questions & one being ‘how does this world work?’ & some secret questions as well. I like to listen to smart, well read people who talk about books they’ve read. When a book is mentioned I look it up and depending on some variables I purchase and read it! This has been a major factor in my mental gains. It’s all about asking the right questions & looking for the right answer.

The underlying, unspoken, unacknowledged aspect of this conversation is the sheer privileged foundation from which Dr. Sachs began his journey. I cannot help but wonder how many wise, big-hearted, genuine human beings fell by the way-side due to economic anonymity? Nevertheless, I think that Dr. Sach's awareness of his own privilege underscores much of his contemporary analysis. He seems to be an anomaly in current world affairs.

American treachery is widespread and long standing. We rarely honor treaties and agreements we've made with countries during diplomatic relations. Since the Civil War there's a history of lying to Native indigenous tribes, ultimately using violence and/ or demanding complete subjugation. Placing them in segregated, closely managed reservations where we erased their cultural identity, language and family system. Russia was once a great friend, but lost their utility after WW2, where their sacrifice was greatest. Putin made countless attempts during his presidency to join the NATO alliance, and strengthen ties with the West. Consistently being rebuffed or ignored, he ultimately gave up. China, our greatest trading partner, is now considered the enemy. All of these diplomatic failures were intentional, as it didn't suit our hegemonic goals. The casualties are always the people, who are last on the list. Dying in endless wars, not for "Democracy" and preservation of "State Sovereignty", but to maintain the status quo. The Cold War never ended. It's seen in our intervention in political outcomes around the world. Instead of having productive relations that benefit the many instead of enriching the few. The U.N. is a grand idea, but has become increasingly toothless and performative. The fact that investigation into destruction of the Nordtream Pipeline was summarily rejected and never to be revisited. The worst act of environmental terrorism in history, resulting in Europe's economic free fall.

Two of my favorite public figures engage in a rational discussion about our current global state of affairs. Unfortunately neither presents to too causes or potential solutions. The root causes of course are capitalism and religious mysticism. The solutions are an economic system that distribute ownership to all citizens and a commitment to seek truth through the only process ever devised that actually reveals reality, the scientific method.

John Mearsheimer precedes Jeffrey Sachs. There is also Gideon Levy. What I find interesting is that now that public opinion finds the state of Israel, the IDF and the propaganda (via the Israel lobby) repulsive, disingenuous and predatorily opportunistic (see Mearsheimer’s take on the dire future for Israel), all of a sudden some American Jewish academics, some American Jewish podcasts are sagely nodding their heads as they criticize Israel and its occupation of Gaza. (Heck, even the word “genocide” is being used.) I think that some American Jewish academics realize that the necessary good will, post- Holocaust, is gone and are gingerly approaching the non-Jewish audience/population. I don’t think that it will work. The die is cast. The Jewish population’s complicity in Gaza etc. has rendered obsolete (in some way) the history books that I read. This is so, so sad. 😕

"The Origins Podcast" with Ph. Jeffrey Sachs get an invite to attend THE BRICS 2024 SUMMIT in Kazan this October 2024. If BRICS+ members knew Jeffrey Sachs would be interested to attend, BRICS+ would hold a reserve seat for Ph. Sachs and offer a warm hearted Invitation to Attend. Biggest Event of the Year will be in Kazan in October 2024.
