Jeffrey Dahmer: Monster or Madman? - Defense Opening Statement (1992)

WI v. DAHMER (1992): It's been 30 years since Jeffrey Dahmer was arrested. Dahmer then pleaded guilty but insane to the murders and dismemberments of 15 boys and men. A jury would decide if Dahmer was sane at the time of the crimes. Depending on their verdict, Dahmer was facing life in prison or admittance to a mental institution. Dahmer was killed in 1994, by his fellow prison inmate Christopher Scarver.

He showed with a decreased person in the bath. He held a person's head in hand whilst he relived him self. Had body parts in fridge. Relived himself inside a dead person. He eats body parts. Yet this is the actions of someone who in legal terms is sane.

Yeaaah, I feel that this would be a very different case today, given the new knowledge of mental disorders. In my eyes, yes he was extremely intelligent and maybe wasn’t insane, but he had struggled with necrophilia his entire life mixed with homosexuality. Having no one to talk to/feel comfortable in your sexuality and talk about your feelings can make you feel hopeless. And his case was hopeless, due to the fact that society also failed him.

In terms of common sense he was totally nuts, but in the legal sense he was not. That's the problem with courts is they have to divide human behavior into black and white, when life is many shades of gray. Dahmer was both deranged and sick, and I think had he received proper treatment he could have stopped this early.

So true.. If your guilty and confessed you shoulnt need a lawyer and make that lawyer look bad and argue to get you a less judgment. ....duet 17 ....After they have interpreted the law and declared their verdict, the sentence they impose must be fully executed; do not modify it in any way. Anyone arrogant enough to reject the verdict of the judge or of the priest who represents the LORD your God must die. In this way you will purge the evil from Israel. Exactly, we want to think he was crazy but in reality he's just human. Look at his interviews in prison he seems perfectly normal and his parents didn't notice him going mad. He just simply had sick fantasies and was willing to play them out and normal people don't want to believe it. Look at how quickly humans became completely barbaric in Iraq and Syria during ISIS times. A lot of those people will have been normal working people in Syria especially before that war started.

I understand where you're coming from. If it wasn't for this prosecutor and the DA's office and even Jeffrey Dahmer's lawyers, then we wouldn't have the psychological studies that we have today. I know that sounds horrible because it's like the victim's had to be some sort of Lab rat for this study to take place. But at least some good did come out of this. For the victims who did die in a horrible most disgusting way, their deaths are not in vain. Because now we have the signs to recognize if your child may have any psychological homicidal tendencies in the future. That helps save lives.
