The world needs Jeff Porcaro. true legend.
You were six feet tall when you played. You were truly a master drummer. Greatly missed.
my favorite drummer is Jeff porcaro!

What an amazing soul Jeff was!
One of the greatest drummers ever but I will remember him now for his love of his father.
King of groove!! untouchable and will forever be....
and well spoken
the master of beat...
what great drummer.
And look at the friendship between them..
The groove master himself!!!
Legend.
Wish I could go back in time and warn him about his heart and circulation issues. That's likely why he couldn't play more time as he discussed here.

@@elroddin76 according to sources he complained of cramping in his arms from the age of approximately 20-21. Maybe earlier. That's not cigs and coke. Steve L, and others, have stated Jeff was the least of the group to "party," at least to the extent they did. Obviously was a congenital issue, or should I say, it seems like that. Not saying cigs and coke didn't exacerbate the issue though.
In regards to height: I've always thought that as well. Whenever I see drummers that are tall and lanky, they always tend to look like their playing is more effortless. I'm 5"6 and I always wished I was taller with longer arms etc. Jeff Porcaro...what a class act! Wish he was still with us.

I am 6"0 and being tall in drumming is tricky most of us destroyed our lower backs due to bad position now that I raised my throne I have troubles with the height of the hi-hat stand, it is just not enough, stick sizes are an issue too, now I tend to go with bigger drum sizes and cymbals .... well fit them in a car and so on, little nick nacks like that, and when I see Japanese drummers, so in size with the more common drum sizes, they even make 13" hats look normal and cool, if I use 13" hi-hats would look so ridiculous hahaha

Bernard Purdie was a pretty big influence on Jeff Procaro. The "Purdie Shuffle" (as it's called) was a groove Jeff picked up and took it to the next level on tunes like "Lido Shuffle" and "Rosanna".

funklover24, Yes, and Jim Keltner, as well. My reply was regarding Gordon’s influence on Jeff’s Lido Shuffle. “T Keane” mistakenly credits Purdie for that. Jeff said that Jim Gordon’s work on Steely Dan’s “Charlie Freak” influenced Jeff’s Lido Shuffle. He speeded it up. Purdie’s influence is heard on Jeff’s “Rosanna” shuffle.
Merci

It says he was 5'7, that's not that short. Why does he say he wishes he was 6'? Is drumming easier for taller people? I don't quite get that.

Yeah, it is A LOT easier for tall people. A few inches can mean a lot when playing for a long time. And Jeff played for 8 hours a day 6 days a week through 15 years straight, which would have been so much easier for him if he was 6 feet.

He was wrong about Size. The Bigger you are, the more energy that is required to run the machine (just like Cars). Look at Boxers....Heavyweight fighters are slower and get tired easier...the lightweights can swing all night~
If I only had seen him live on stage once 🙏😕
I’m 6’2” and see no real advantage to being tall. If anything, it’s harder to be balanced behind the kit the taller you are.

Height is an oversimplification - a larger frame would help with added bone and muscle mass to counter the physics of live playing which Jeff did constantly. Jeff's own criticism was that he didn't hit hard enough.

Aren't that what mic's are for? I mean I have seen hours of video, as you have too, of Jeff playing. His ability, or lack of, to pop a drum didn't seem lacking at all.
How would more height help you play longer? Am I missing an obvious answer?

It makes sense too, because he's always had a weak heart, so the blood wouldn't flow perfectly through his veins to all his limbs. Few years before his death he often complained to Steve about just being in constant pain after playing for a certain time. Luke said this in an interview, however I can't recall which one at this very moment

Simon Phillips, the guy who replaced Jeff, is also a really small guy. Do I see a pattern here?
where this interview was he had 2 years to live, and he had to die in shitty gardening. Life is a whore. Some rapists and murderers live until they die of old age. God has taken us great musicians like Mike Porcaro, Jeff Porcaro Fergie Frederiksen. What an incredible suffering the parents and brother of Jeff and Mike Porcaro suffered. If you are traveling by car then you will always hear the music of TOTO up and down the radio and you will always be plagued with memories all your life. God protect Mike Jeff and Fergie, In Heaven they can do a second Toto Band Reasons and the angels with beautiful music make happy.
