"He was extremely generous in helping people with their philosophy" I can attest to the truth of this statement. 10 years ago, I was in my second semester in community college when I fell in love with Professor Parfit's work. I genuinely began to idolize the man. I decided to analyze one of his books for my final paper, and kept running into ideas that I needed clarification on. After much deliberation, I decided to email the man himself with my questions. There were a lot of them. I was some no name kid from a no name school in Florida, so I didn't expect a reply from one of the greatest philosophers & thinkers of all time. To my astonishment and joy, I received his reply 2 days later. Derek had painstakingly read through my very lengthy questions, and provided extremely precise, organized and thoughtful explanations to each one. He had even attached several pdf's with information where I could learn more about each of his points. THe way he wrote was beautiful. His words managed to convey a sense of peace and humility without trying to. The man really was saintly.

Derek Parfit is my hero.

It would be of philosophical interest to have Derek Parfits' photography career made public as a way to inform of correlations between image capture and text. This would amount to a wholistic appreciation of a public intellectual who gives analysis on theories and concepts, such as, personal identity.

Thank you Prof. McMahan. I had brief encounters with Parfit as a graduate student and was each time deeply impressed. When I've felt disheartened or cynical towards philosophy, remembering Derek Parfit has brought me back to having good and positive thoughts towards the discipline.
