Jeff Lemire’s MOON KNIGHT: The Fight To Find Oneself

Ойын-сауық

An analysis of Jeff Lemire's Moon Knight, a Marvel Comics run from 2016 with art by Greg Smallwood, Wilfredo Torres, Francesco Francavilla, and James Stokoe, that delved deep into the mind of Marc Spector with a psychedelic and metaphorical battle between Spector and the personalities of Steven Grant, Jack Lockley, and Moon Knight, but most of all, the fight against Khonshu in this extrapolation of the effects of Dissociative Identity Disorder with this 14-issue comic's focus on mental health and the path toward healing.

I was going to read this run online, but after I read the first issue I knew I had to get it physically. It probably had one of the strongest hooks I've ever seen with that double page spread of New York being engulfed in sands and pyramids. I was able to buy the complete edition and good god it's just fantastic. Every page was amazing and a delight to look at and read. Not only that, but the fact that it was so empowering towards mental illness (and disabilities as a whole) towards the end was just icing on the cake. Currently, this is easily my favorite comic run I've read so far in my newfound appreciation for American comics, and I'm so glad you made a video on this run so other people can give it a try too.

It's being made by directors that have an interesting filmography so it has the chance to really stand out when it comes to the other marvel shows that have been released. I remember first knowing about Moon Knight through your first video on the character. And I read that run by…[redacted] and then finding the Jeff Lemire afterwards. And wow, Lemire now might be my favorite comic writer but this is easily one his best works from his non-creator owned material. You can definitely tell he had to a tight rope to walk on with exploring the mental health side of the character while still keeping it an entertaining Marvel comic. And from my perspective as someone who does suffers mental health, I think this is one of the most respectful and nuanced takes. And the artwork by Smallwood and Co.? Fantastic. I am cautiously optimistic for the upcoming MCU show because while I have faith that since this a character starting from scratch they’ll do something interesting and Oscar Isaac + Ethan Hawke, none of the MCU shows age well after thinking about them more due to their limitations. (Loki is the exception though). As for the comics, I’ve read the [redacted] run, the Lemire run and the Bendis/Maleev run (I thought it was okay). Any other recommendations? (Jed McKay’s run I’m planning to get into)

It’s interesting that you mentioned immortal Hulk during, since the hulk is confirmed to be appearing on the moon knight show. It’s strange that the 2 characters almost never interact considering that they both have D.I.D. Bruce and Mark could certainly compare notes and come to view each other as kindred spirits. I honestly believe that Mark’s D.I.D would be totally manageable if not for Khonshu’s influence and manipulation. Bruce’s D.I.D is more rooting in trauma, so he has a more uphill struggle, and why I think it’s so easy for him to allow himself to backslide into self loathing( which Savage Hulk calls him out on in immortal Hulk, and in the current hulk run, his mental state seems worse than ever.) It’s such as missed opportunity that Bruce’s D.I.D has never even been hinted at on film in the MCU. Stay, it’s fascinating that this and immortal hulk Parallel each other so much, despite being written far apart. Both characters end their journeys confronting a literal god and Uniting their fractured psyche. It’s just too bad that happiness for Bruce never seems to last. The moon knight show looks intriguing and hopefully werewolf by night with show up. Oscar Isaac will turn in a great performance.

Without a doubt, Lemire's take on the character is the cherry on the cake, moving Moon Knight lore onto a whole new level. I met Greg Smallwood maybe 3 or 4 years before this Moon Knight run. It was always fun talking to him and his art immediately became one of my favorites. I think it mostly came from his background with graphic design because I feel like at his best, Smallwood really loves to play with page layout in an impactful way. Jeff Lemire is still great, but at that time, it felt like Lemire was hitting an absolute peak with his writing. Smallwood had already put work in at Marvel with the half comic story in A+X #15 that featured a Beast and Dr. Strange story. The art in that story was so fun and the layout was so topsy turvy that I really wanted to see Smallwood on a book like Dr. Strange or something with magic. When I found out he was doing Moon Knight, I didn't know much about the character but was stoked to see a Lemire/Smallwood Moon Knight. Man, that book did not disappoint. Matt Draper explained the art by Smallwood in this book wonderfully. It's a short run and I would highly recommend it. Writing and art are great together. A true testament of comics and why they are still an important and valid medium. You do not need to know more about the character other than maybe the most basic setup. Haven't started the show but I've been rooting for Oscar Isaac since Sucker Punch and Drive. Even with "bad" characters, he performed so well. So much talent around this character.

Always thought this run was immensely underrated, tackles some dark stuff but also feels very playful and imaginative.

I just finished this run, it's hard to articulate but it reminded me of Naked Lunch by William S Burroughs. I loved the Lemine run and am working on the Bendis run now. Think Moon Knight might legit be a new favorite character.

I watched both of your Moon Knight videos to prepare for the Disney+ series, but after some reviews, I think I wanna read the comics more than watching the event series. Maybe you could review it in the light of the comic run and give us your opinion. Great video as usual, Matt!! Thanx!!!

So I’ve watched Matt’s videos for a while now and I just realized that he list the music in each video. Has anyone made a playlist as I feel like there are some bangers I’m missing out on

Since you bring up Immortal Hulk, I honestly feel this run is a lot better in regards to how it tackles mental illness than IH. I never liked the whole “One Below All” business & how it establishes Bruce becoming the Hulk as an avatar for cosmic Satan . I feel that was an unfortunate wrinkle on an already problematic backstory, as Bruce turning into a violent monster because of his child abuse always felt a little offensive to me to begin with. Moon Knight is a much more human, grounded story in spite of the Egyptian god Khonsu, because as you noted, it’s ambiguous as to wether or not he exists or if the confrontation actually took place. Anyway, those are my thoughts. I know everyone loves IH, but I feel this a very underrated run that resonated with me a lot more. Hope to see more Moon Knight videos from you in the future Matt!

I'd love to see you cover Jeff Lemire's run on green arrow. It's relatively short but a fantastic run. Maybe not the deepest story, but it's very well written.
