“Once I Was” might be the saddest Jeff performance recorded. Makes me sob... near the end it sounds like he’s about to as well, can barely muster a “Thank you” at the end.

I don’t know what they are waiting for. I am 2 years older than Jeff. Been following him since I saw Mojo pin video on MTV. Point is we are all getting older, I don’t get why they don’t release more music/video, because I would certainly buy it in a second.

😔 It’s so confusing why Tim never acknowledged Jeff. He had no idea how lucky he was to have Jeff as a son, this was a phenomenal tribute. Jeff never let his father go, regardless of how he was treated. That really is Grace.

Jeff said Tim had a horrible father. All Tim could see himself being, if he were in Jeff’s life, was a terrible father. That is at least what Jeff believed.

Tim's father was quite an abusive and frightening man and Tim was apparently scared of repeating the same mistakes that his father had made with Jeff. He also believed early on that he would die young so he chose to commit himself entirely to his music while he could. There's no doubt he loved Jeff and missed him dearly and his regret and sadness at having to leave was the crux of the pain he communicated in his songs.

This was an earth shattering moment in musical history. Hal Willner is a visionary genius for putting this together and Jeff Buckley in many ways owes his career to Hal Willner. Hal Willner met buckley and orchestrated this tim buckley tribute as a way to launch Jeff into the music scene. Hal clearly knew what he was about to do.

I believe this was Jeff seeking closure.. Can you imagine being the abandoned child singing this whilst knowing you've only been asked because you look and sound like that man? You can hear it in his vocals.... It's a fuck you! And a statement to the fans... "I am not a lyric to envoke empathy for a metaphorical father and his unknown child, I'm a person, and I'm real, and this is the outcome. He did this to my mother and I." Unfortunately it feels like it was lost on them? Who am I to say, though.

I was there. It was bone chillingly amazing. My best friend was 13 years older than me, and had introduced me to Tim Buckley's music. Jeff was soon to start performing around NYC after this, but this was a trial by fire. The whole show was a knockout emotionally. I also saw him play St. Ann's church again with his own band during Grace, which was another amazing night.

I don’t think people realize how significant it was-that Jeff decided to play “I never asked to be your mountain”. Maybe I’m misinterpreting that song, but I’ve always thought that was clearly about Jeff, his Mother, and Tim. And if I’m being honest… Although I think it’s an amazing song-I’ve always thought its “message” was absolutely disgusting, and made Tim seem like a piece of shit. Maybe I’m just interpreting it in that way because I also don’t have a relationship with my father… But it sounds like Tim was saying “I never asked to be your mountain… i.e. I didn’t ask for all of this… so you can’t be mad at me for not being around”.

I think you’re exactly spot on. I think Tim wrote it for Mary and Jeff from the documentaries I’ve seen about it. And exactly, the meaning is, I never asked for this, to have a child etc. I feel the same, I love the song but it actually makes Tim look bad because he abandoned his son and wife basically
