Lyrics:
There's the moon asking to stay
Long enough for the clouds to fly me away
Well it's my time coming, i'm not afraid to die
My fading voice sings of love,
But she cries to the clicking of time
Of time
Wait in the fire...
And she weeps on my arm
Walking to the bright lights in sorrow
Oh drink a bit of wine we both might go tomorrow
Oh my love
And the rain is falling and i believe
My time has come
It reminds me of the pain
I might leave
Leave behind

I like to think of Jeff Buckley as a comet. He appeared and shone so brightly with such force bedazzling those who were lucky to witness him at his prominence but only existed for a brief period before disappearing back into the eternal beyond while people were left scratching their heads in disbelief wondering what exactly had just graced the sky. If I were tasked to sum up his music, his spirit, his emotion and his passion with one word it would be... *Celestial*

I still find myself looking through all sorts of albums looking for something to stratch this very specific musical itch that this guy's album left on me. his style of rock has traces of grunge, alt rock and a whole lot of bands like led zeppelin, but none who came before or after have sounded anything like him. the overall melancholic atmosphere, the heavenly falsettos, the really fucking sick riffs and the tone of his guitar. This guy was a one of a kind musician

Sam Williams so true. I was a low income kid whose family had no car and no cable (no MTV, etc) so if it didn’t play on the radio or my (also low income) friends didn’t have the tape/cd how were we going to hear it? A trip on the bus to the mall or a music store (some stores would have rows of headphones and CD players where you could preview a CD) was kind of a big hassle just to browse (again, couldn’t afford to buy). I remember if a girl I liked mentioned a band she was into, wishing there was a way I could just listen to them or quickly learn about them. Times sure have changed lol.

In Buckley's words: "It's about not feeling so bad about your own mortality when you have true love." Wikipedia: The song was based on an instrumental song called "Rise Up to Be" written by Buckley's collaborator, Gary Lucas. Jeff wrote lyrics inspired by his saying goodbye to his girlfriend at the airport on a rainy day, and the vocal melody came naturally.[1] In Buckley's words, "It's about not feeling so bad about your own mortality when you have true love." Here's what Jeff about Grace during a 1994 interview: "It's about not fearing death, or fearing any of those countless slings and arrows that you suffer sometimes on this earth, because somebody loves you. You're not afraid to go, you're not afraid to withstand what you need to withstand because there's a tremendous fuel that you feel regenerating inside because of someone else's love for you. That's what Grace is about. And it's just about life sometimes being so long. At the time I was anticipating leaving Los Angelos for New York. So I was waiting to go. I'm not afraid to go, I'm not afraid to die, I'm not afraid to go away from this place or from any place but it just goes so slow. And I had somebody who loved me in New York. A lot. And it was amazing. It still is."

This song give me chills down my spine. He even sings about death and the line "and I feel them drown my name" is just so eerie because it's like he predicted what would happen. If his first album was this good, imagine how he would've developed as an artist. I just feel like it can't get better but it would. Breaks my heart. But it's beautiful his music lives on. He was so beautiful and looked a bit like James Dean, who also died very young, both had so much more to give...

Both of Jeff Buckley's parents were musicians. His mom was a classically trained musician and his father was a rock and folk musician who died at 28 of a heroin overdose. He grew up playing piano and guitar and singing from a young age. That's why he has such an amazing voice and why he has such a huge range.

There's the moon asking to stay Long enough for the clouds to fly me away Well it's my time coming, I'm not afraid, afraid to die My fading voice sings of love, But she cries to the clicking of time, oh, time. Wait in the fire, wait in the fire Wait in the fire, wait in the fire And she weeps on my arm Walking to the bright lights in sorrow Oh drink a bit of wine we both might go tomorrow Oh my love And the rain is falling and I believe my time has come It reminds me of the pain I might leave, leave behind, Wait in the fire, wait in the fire Wait in the fire, wait in the fire And I feel them drown my name So easy to know and forget with this kiss I'm not afraid to go but it goes so slow Wait in the fire, wait in the fire, oh oh yea oh oh oh yeah unh Wait, wait, wait in the fire, wait in the fire Wait in the fire, wait ah uh unh ah Songwriters BUCKLEY, JEFF / LUCAS, GARY Read more: Jeff Buckley - Grace Lyrics | MetroLyrics

My dad was obsessed with this song. Every second weekend he would drive us up to my Nan and Grandad's cottage in the Lake District. I was squished into the backseat of the car as it twisted and turned up hairpin bends going up the hill to the cottage which was perched at the top of it. My dad would play this song and for me it symbolises the excitement of going to see my grandparents, of racing up hairpin bends in the dark, all you could see was what the headlights illuminated which was literally just tufts of grass at the roadside and the smell of leather from my dad's new car was in my nostrils. Such an amazing experience. I hear this song and it's like joy to me.

Jixie Dye - There's something about your description of this - I swear I could smell the leather and the earth of the Lake District. My parents brought the family from England in 1960 - we lived in Toronto and then in 1973 I moved to Los Angeles. I've never been back to England but as I get older I think about it all the time -- " in England's green and pleasant land ..." Jeff Buckley - he was so sweet and wonderful - a magical being, really.. I was in a band in Toronto in the 1960's and we spent a week with his father, Tim Buckley, driving him around . He was a mystery too. My daughter became friends with Jeff - 30 years later and they had a magical connection. It's weird, even though I know Jeff is no longer with us - I forget - and it REALLY FEELS LIKE HE's HERE!

+zaxapitsa Both were excellent singers, but I would say they both were very different as well, so I'm not sure how to compare the two. Reading your previous comment, I think you should listen to Peter Hammill (if you haven't already), or the band where he was a singer, Van der Graaf Generator. His vocals are just... superb, and I think that's even an understatement. A louse is not a home from his solo, and Still Life from VdGG should give you a good sense of his talents.

  • @zaxapitsa

    @zaxapitsa

I know van der graaf, not much though. You're right, he has an amazing range, thanks. It's hard to compare, I try to forget about all the intangible, I mean the charisma, the stagecraft, the instrumental, but in the end it's all about your own criteria. I, personally, have never been so impressed with a singer as I was with Buckley, how he balanced power and delicacy at such high notes, it's ridiculous. As a singer myself, I find that impossible. He didn't have a beautiful tone like Robert Plant or Chris Cornell, or delivered like Mercury, but he was just paranormal.

Here's what Jeff about Grace during a 1994 interview: "It's about not fearing death, or fearing any of those countless slings and arrows that you suffer sometimes on this earth, because somebody loves you.

Grace is probably my favorite song of all time, every single detail in the recording has a special place and a reason to exist, obviously starting with Jeff’s voice (that goes from almost whispering in the beginning to almost screaming in a super high note at the end), the structure of the chords (the tension that creates and then resolving) and melodies, the power and rhythm of bass and drums (even the toms are perfectly toned and miked, please pay attention to that), the Magical Guitarness of Gary Lucas that creates a mysterious kind of background, and the strings arrangement (specially in the second verse), the lyrics and its deep meanings, and how everything merges together forming a beautiful masterpiece.

Anyone still listing to Jeff's story in 2021? Music for the soul, his voice just resonates with the frequency of the soul. No idk if it hits 7 but I feel calm everytime I listen

He was a good songwriter, a good guitar player, a good singer and good looking, how is it possible that he didn't become big in the 90s?

537 people don't know what good music is. You may not enjoy this so much, but clicking "I don't like it" to this is one step further that only proves you can't appreciate music. Even if this song doesn't get to you, at least you should appreciate the quality of the voice, the feeling in it,the harmonies... I think it's just a masterpiece.

Came home late one night in ‘94 and switched on MTV. It was around 2am and I was sitting alone in the living room when this song came on. It was as if it had arrived from a different dimension. I hardly slept that night. The harmonies haunted my mind.
