Jeep xj with 35s on stock gears is it possible??

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Why Upgrade?
The stock 3.55:1 gear ratio you find in most automatic XJ Cherokee’s is perfect for the stock tire size or even a little bit larger. We’ve seen XJs on 37-inch tires run the stock gear ratios, but it was struggling to turn to those big tires. As you increase the size of the tires you effectively raise your gear ratio. Higher gear ratios are great for fuel mileage since your engine will be turning at a slower speed, but they’re not good for off-roading.
If you make your gear ratio lower, it multiplies engine torque. The more effective torque you have, the easier it will be to crawl up obstacles. The whole idea behind lowering your gear ratio as you increase tire size is to maintain the effective drive ratio of a stock XJ Cherokee. If your effective drive ratio isn’t near the stock ratio it can cause transmission issues amongst many other problems. If you’re building a crawler you’ll obviously want an even lower gear ratio for more torque.
Gear Ratio For 33-Inch Tires
When you upgrade to 33-inch tires you can run stock gearing, but we strongly don’t recommend it. A good gear for an AW4 automatic with 33-inch tires is a 4.10:1 or 4.56:1 gear ratio. Both of these will keep you around the stock drive ratio. Personally, we think the 4.56:1 gear ratio is better thanks to its improved acceleration and crawling abilities.
Gear Ratio For 35-Inch Tires
For 35-inch tires, the stock gearing is really going to struggle. Unless you have a V8 swapped engine we strongly don’t recommend using the stock gearing. A good gear ratio for the AW4 automatic running 35-inch tires is 4.56:1 or 4.88:1 gear. Part of the reason we recommend 4.56:1 gears for the 33-inch tires is because they also work well with 35-inch tires. If your Jeep has the AX-15 automatic you’ll want around a 4.10:1 gear ratio. At this tire size, you’ll also want to look into upgrading your rear axle to a Ford 8.8 or Dana 44. Make sure whatever gears you buy will work with the axles you’re buying.
Gear Ratio For 37-Inch Tires
At the 37-inch tire size, you’ll probably want to upgrade to full-size axles. You can make narrow width axles work, but you better get used to swapping axles shafts. If you’re running an AW4 automatic, a good gearing ratio for 37-inch tires is 4.88:1 or 5.13:1 gears.
If your Jeep is equipped with an AX-15 automatic you’ll probably want 4.56:1 gears. At this tire size, your Jeep won’t be very street friendly so an even lower gear ratio than what we recommend might be better for crawling.
Gear Ratio For 40-Inch Tires
At the 40-inch tire size, your XJ will basically be un-driveable on the street. Depending on what axles your Jeep has, your gear selection may be limited. The Jeep in the photo below is running 5.13 gears on 40” tires, but with the addition of an Eaton M62 supercharger.
If your Jeep is just a stock 4.0-liter you’ll want anything from a 5.29:1 to 6.17:1 gear ratio for the AW4 automatic. If your Jeep has an AX-15 you’ll probably want 4.88:1 or 5.13:1 gears to make crawling as easy as possible.
For an AX-15 manual, you’ll want around a 3.55:1 gear ratio. Fortunately, most automatic XJs have 3.55:1 gear ratios so upgrading should be pretty cheap if you opt for used axles.

I’ve got a wrangler 6 cyl manual on 35’a and stock gears. Very lethargic. There’s an xj44 with a mini spool and matching 4.56’s in my garage right now waiting to be built for that reason. 3.07’s even in low range don’t make for much of a crawler.

I have a cherokee 2.5L manual it has 4.11 gearing, i dont know if its stock gearing. Dana 30 front chrysler 8.25 rear. Is it okay to have 35 inch tires? I just got it. Thanks!

Pretty solid info. Id say though that the gear ratio charts are very generic taking the one size fits all approach. Find a calculator that asks for transmission final drive ratio and rpm at a desired speed. Often if you just use a chart you’ll be disappointed and wanting a numerically higher ratio.

I wouldn't go any lower than 4.56 with the Dana 30, the pinion gear is really small on a 4.88 and 5.13 gear for the dana 30.

I’m on 32’s no lift. I’d like to go to higher, but I want Dana 60’s for that. I may change gears, but if I go with stock axels i am going low as possible on 37’s

5.5" lift, 33's w/4.56 locked f&r. Night & day difference. Way more low end pull & fun on the street. Sure you can keep stockers, but why? Don't putz out now.

Ya I'm same lift,33's but I opted for 4.88's thinking I'd upgrade to 35's but im real happy with this set up. Stock gears made everything work harder and gas mileage went out the window.

Hey Ronnie, hoping you can help ease my mind a bit. I currently have an 01 wj thats basically on 32s 2” lift and according to the vin has 3.73 gears. Its an absolute pig on the highway with no passing power but ive never had a 4.0 that was fast so maybe ive gotten to used to my 260hp 4.0 4runner. Anyways im looking at buying a gorgeous 01 xj with 6.5” of lift on 35s and stock gears. Guy says it drives fine and hes been daily driving for awhile. Which concerns me abt the condition of the tranny. But this guy also lives in toledo and works at chrysler so im gonna go drive it. Just hoping ill be able to daily it as i work construction and work all over ohio. It seems to be a good value and id pay to have the gears done but the wife might be mad at me for wanting to spend a grand plus after just buying it. 😆. Thanks for the video. You give me some hope bc the forums say your a nut job and the jeep will literally explode if you do this.

So my xj is a trail ride and doesn't ever see the highway. I have about 6 inches of lift and want to run 35s but what kind of problems if any should I expect to run into being that it's only a trail build.

Nobody ever says anything about upgrading the torque converter which would help also with larger tires. I mean if you upgrade the gears you really don't need to upgrade the torque converter but you could probably upgrade the torque converter and not upgrade the gears and still see some improvement.

Me and my buddy both have 35s on a Chrysler 8.25 with 3.55 gears (98 Cherokee 6.5in lift). We wheel HARD in mud holes and do a lot of hill climbing. No issues. I welded my rear 6 months ago and haven’t had an issue yet.

You'll feel the difference but it's all good. 31s made my speedo off about two and a half to 3 mph,(at 50/55mph). 33s have pushed it to 5 to 6 mph off. Even with the 33s regearing seems like an option not a necessity.
