All these over price hoist systems are not only overpriced but way more complicated than it has to be. I bought an $85 2,500lbs wench from Harbor Freight, a 2x12 board at 8ft long, drilled some holes for the wrench and nut/bolted the wench to the 2x12 and then tossed it all above my ceiling joists and nailed the 2x12 above the joists once I got it where I needed it. I lowered the hook with the wireless remote it came with, and got a 100ft nylon rope for the straps. Since I have a Gladiator I went under the front of the hard top with one rope and then another separate rope inside the back window and through the front of the hard top and tied figure-8 knots on both sides of each of the two ropes once I got the size I needed and then cut the excess off. And that was it. I have a powered hoist that lifts my 85lbs top off that HAS a weight maximum of 2,500lbs and everything is bolted and nailed down. Took me all of 30 minutes to slap together and I guarantee you it’s stronger than this $450 rig in the video and it costs no more than $100 all together.

I did the same exact thing with a 880lb Champion hoist. Still cost significantly less than this option, and far less complicated (just like you stated). I cut a grommet into the ceiling, and installed the unit in the attic above the joists. It gives an extra foot of clearance, and completely hides the hoist motor. I also used sling load straps to connect to the clevis hook.

This is the best JT top hoist design I've found so far. I haven't tried any of them yet. Still researching.

I think my hoist device is only a single spool device. Does this change anything?

Any issues with the back window lift if you have headliners installed in your top?

Is the 2x6 alone enough to support the weight of the hoist with the 4” lag bolts? Assuming that there were no studs in the ceiling where the motor is installed.

So there is no way to use the single cable hoist that came with our JK setups?

this is way over-complicated in my humble opinion... you just need $99 harbor freight hoist with a single cable from overhead and some ratchet straps through the windows.

exactly. I been thinking of building a hoist and dont understand all the complicated designs vids I've been watching. It's a 150lbs...one winch over head mounted to the joists, a hook and 2 straps through the windows...😂
