The late model TJ's are better than the early model JK's in my opinion.

The "Block 2" Jeep TJ from 2003 to 2006 are the good and the 2003 + 2004 are THE best: those have better 4.0L inline 6 block castings as they were still solid and not worn out from foundry casting use. Daimler didn't want to fix those as they didn't want to wait funds on a motor they didn't invent = NIH syndrome (Not Invented Here). *All Jeep JK's suck* as they look goofy & bloated for the aging Baby Boomer population plus depart from what a Jeep is ~ by adding 2 additional doors so little Timmy or Sally can have the Jeep experience. Also, they have a 3.8L v6 minivan engine. A 4 door JK is trying to be a Jeep Cherokee XJ and cannot pull that off as it's a phaker Jeep JK 4 door. The TJ got beat up on when it came out in late 1996 as a 1997 model for having too much plastic. Looks like Chrysler outdid itself by making the JoKe have even more plastic and thinner sheet metal. Even a "Block 1" Jeep TJ from 1997-2002 is better than any JK due to its simplicity and having less electronics to go bad. Lastly, the ease of maintenance is inherent the TJ design due to their use of inline engines. And there it is....

Loved the thorough video! A couple things i thought i'd mention as I have a Black 2001 TJ Sahara, is if you pull straight out on the tip of the signal light it turns on the factory fog/driving lights. Also the wiring harness you have in the cargo area can be shortened considerably, Chrysler says to disconnect that extension tail after you get your new Jeep home and remove the soft top that was tucked inside from new and to discard that wiring extension tail, mine is removed and it works (reaches) fine, I did however keep it in my garage in case I need it for parts, when you disconnect it, it actually has a factory plug for the washer hose leashed to the hose eliminating the need for the golf tee. FYI

Just so you know the hard top harness is so long because that's the extension that comes from the factory on the TJs that came with the both hard and soft top package and it had that extra length to go around the soft top folded up back there while the hard top was on at the same time. That's how you got the Jeep when you bought it new from the dealer. Jeep instructed people to remove one of the tops, and the extra extension and discard it because it will never be needed again since you only have one top on at a time. Pretty interesting, I found that out whatching a 45 min video from Jeep that was originally a VHS haha

Nice Jeep! Could use a Jeep ZJ tie-rod conversion & some newer 2003-2006 mirrors, matching spare tire with aftermarket carrier when one does blow up on the road + wider fender flares to help cover those 35"s as that would make a good Jeep there even better :)

Your door handles, mirror mounts, and back door handle look so nice. Mine are chipping and sun-fading, any advice as to what I could use to restore them? Nice jeep I have an LJ with 45000 miles and I thought it was the cleanest jeep I've ever found but I guess not haha. But just wondering if you would recommend 35-inch tires I have a dana 44 in the rear but a 30 up front do you think it would be a bad idea to move up to 35s? I'm just not sure if it's gonna hurt me if I don't upgrade my gearing and axels too.

So I have the D44 rear and 30front and stock 3.73 gears and it works great for me. I don't know how well the stock axles would last if I was doing some of the crazy off roading/crawling some guys do but for street driving and trail riding for me its great. But I would like to upgrade my steering to be better suited for offroad use and not bend the tiny stock tie rod.

It seems like I've seen an aftermarket mirror "adaptor" (for lack of a better word) that allows you to mount the mirrors forward of the door so they can be used with the doors off. Does this sound right?

  • @Abe.Wassenstein

Bestop make the factory tops. They do replacement tops but come in 3 different fabrics. The traditional Replace A Top is a thinner material than what the factory offers. The Sail Cloth Replace A Top has the same material as the factory material. The Twill Replace A Top is a premium BMW Mercedes Style top.

I have the slantback/fastback style soft top for my 2000 TJ and I love it. Gives it a great look. However, it is a bitch to get the back top part open because of it being so tight.

You can upgrade your tie rod to a tr from a zj grand Cherokee v8. Much more beefier and also cheap. At least until you can put a better setup. It'll give you a little peace of mind.
