Jeep Sport or Rubicon - Which Do You Need?
In this video we go over the biggest differences between my Jeep Wrangler Sport and Jeff's Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. Both are extremely capable vehicles and have their own pros and cons. Luckily I've been able to get to almost anywhere I've wanted to go in my Jeep Sport, convincing me this Jeep is probably the best option for someone without a "Rubicon budget" but still wanting to get into the world of Jeeps.

Another great video! Stock Jeeps are more capable than most people realize.

It’s not stock. It’s modified
Dude you made my decision for me and I guess a sport s is the way to go
New to buying a jeep but have spent quite a bit of time researching information. This was great.
Been binging Jeep videos. I dig the straight forward advice and talk. Subbed
Great content I have been in the market but couldn't decide which to get. I think Ill go with sport s and use the extra money for upgrades. Thank you for the help.
Great video. I drive a 2017 JK 'FREEDOM' model. It is basically an upgraded SPORT. I have 18" wheels and M/S tires. I live in Colorado. I am a fly fisherman. So the places I go I can get to with my Jeep. As a matter of fact the only time I have needed 4WD is in snow or on a big rock trail. When I bought it I asked myself, 'What do I really NEED and am I willing to pay the price.' The Rubicon was $12,000 more than mine. I decided to go with the FREEDOM and put the extra money into what I wanted to add: mainly A SUNRIDER roof and LED light group. I am glad I didn't go with the RUBICON. However, if you want to go on super hard trails spend the money and get the RUBICON.
This is a great video. I like the idea of not spending so much upfront. Then spending as you go.
I have a 2017 j/k and it came stock with the factory touchscreen radio, Alpine speakers and build in sub. So as far as interiors goes, you can get all options for all 3 trims. As far as off-roading upgrades all I did was a 3 inch lift, and the Sarah’s stock wheels and m/t tires. Still hasn’t let me down!!!
I looked at the Jeep Sport, Sahara and Willy’s but after test driving several of these models I acquired the Rubicon Hard Rock Edition and am glad I did. This Hard Rock is sweet and very capable out in the elements.
Great video guys. I have a stock 2017 JKU Sahara, which I bough brand new in 2018, so I got a crazy good deal. I went to buy a Rubicon and saved like $10k getting the Sahara. So I am planning on upgrading with purpose and as needed. Excellent commentary. I subscribed.
I appreciate your candor sharing your combined Jeep experiences.’ It answered my question, “do I really need a Rubicon?” A Wrangler Sport S might be all I need. Thanks guys!
I give you guys a lot of credit for the the content, it was fair and thoughtful. Thank you.
New to the Jeep world, purchased a 2010 2-dr Sport and look forward to many adventures!
Completely depends on what you want to do if you plan on just doing 35 or less the Rubicon is a good package if you plan on going bigger or you like to drive with a little bit more fuel pedal by the sport and build it better.
Well said..I own a 20 wrangler sport s and have been to Rausch creek in PA twice..off road park no lift stock tires..and was blown away by its capabilities..when 90 % of the jeeps their are rubies...and i ran green /blues trails
Thanks you so much for this video. It’s the debate I’ve been dealing with for the past week. Thanks guys. Going jeep willy’s instead of rubicon
Keeps have great resale value. Could try sport and upgrade to Rubi later without losing a lot in depreciation.
I have owned 6 Jeeps over the year. TJ, JL, XJ, 2 Libertys, and a grand wagoner. The most I’ve ever had is limited slip, and all of them have taken me everywhere I wanted to go, some easier than others, but with a good spotter and tire placement you can go just about anywhere in most Jeeps (at least the “trail rated, they used to all be trail rated you didn’t have to have a badge to tell which to buy)

Agreed, know your vehicle, momentum, tire placement and angles and. these jeeps you can get where you need to go. I don't live where there is deep mud nor do I do extreme rock climbing.
Just installed the same lift with falcon 3.3 reservoir shocks it’s a great lift
good video, but axles work differently than stated, power is split through the axles equally at all time, its the torque that is applied (A spinning wheel can't get any additional torque) so the wheel with the least amount of traction is the one that spins. Accelerating will just increase speed, not torque. One old trick on RWD vehicles is to get extra traction is to lightly apply the rear park brake. I vote with a base Jeep Sport and a few mods and you're good to go!
Just bought my 2015 Jeep Wrangler s sport. Boy do I love it. It’s always my dream to owed one
Don't know what year your Rubi is, but the sway bar disconnect works in both 4H and 4L for my 2017
I've heard from Jeep dealers that the Rubicon is a different vehicle than the other 2 levels of wranglers. They look the same but things thst make the Rubicon the most capable off reader are the things underneath. The Rock Trac Transfer case and transmission are way different from the Comaamd trac. Transfer cases work in coordination with the drive axles, differentials, driveshafts, transmission, and wheels in order to evenly disperse power.the Rock-Trac system helps the Rubicon maintain a slow and steady rock-crawling pace with enough torque to conquer nearly any obstacle. Plus the Rubicon comes with Tru-Lok electronic locking front and rear differentials plus an electronic front sway bar disconnect that enhances the Rubicon’s off-roading capabilities even further. Plus the axles are wider and thicker in the Rubicon for stability and strength. Plus all the suspension parts like all 8 control arms, spring and steering components like draglink, tie rod and trackbar are beefier which gives it more strength to handle larger tires and larger obstacles...

@Jason Davis Any mass market OEM product will not compare to competition grade aftermarket products. Not every needs or even does enough rock crawling to need a pro rock. But some do and that why they buy the sport and tear it down to build it up.
Definitely depends on what your going to do with your jeep. Most people don’t realize though is you can sell axles, sway bar, and t-case though for a significant amount out of rubi…
whats a decent budget size suspension lift would you advise? running on 35 inch tires? im thinking 2.5" lift..but i really dont know what im doing
Great vid! Very helpful. Wish you’d go into what gears and why are better for certain uses. I’m little stuck on that. But great job👍🏻
Sway bar works In both 4hi and 4Low in JL.. only the locking Diffs work in 4Lo. Also if you go. Over 15 mph the sway bar will engage on its own, and it must be on level ground too
Here in Maine even the dealership said the Rubicon was over kill. I ended up with a 2021 Sahara JL can’t complain it has taken me places I shouldn’t have gone. But didn’t go alone just in case.
Great conversation on a topic more people should know about. The stock jeep is very capable.
If someone gets into doing some serious offroading, is the rubicon kind of a waste? At what point would you replace axels? Swaybars, etc?
An honest video thanks guys good stuff
Ima put 38 in mt tires ,some danatrac axels and a 4. 0 in coil over lift kit on my sport
Did you add the grill vent on the hood of your Jeep Sport?
Can you guys do a video on when to use 4high vs 4low? And when to use the lockers and when to use the sway bar?

Disconnect sway bar when you need Flex or just don't run one at all problem solved. Used for high when you need a little bit of speed and when you need lower gears used 4 low.
Very informative comments thank you
How much do you think is spent on a Sport before you get to what a Rubicon offers stock?
This is an excellent video
Thanks for the video
would the Willys package be worth it over the sport ?
Just turned 18. Can’t drive yet but I’d like to get a wrangler sport with hydraulics so I can get it to bounce. But my mom wants me to get a Prius. 😀
Thanks for the advice. Very helpful. Want to buy Jeep Wrangler or Tacoma for off-roading but not sure what I really need. I’m a novice can’t spend a lot of money.
Great video buddy
Can we get the link to the grill on the rubicon
Great video
Wrangler sport is highly capable in stock trim...very impressed by mine go to Rausch creek in PA. Green/blues

How many inches of lift is that?
What about the axles the Rubicon comes with. Example. Sport model with 37s and lockers for family outings and deep woods hunting? Or Rubicon?
@julieheyer9240

Patrick Amos the Rubicon comes with a much better axle than he sport so if you’re going to 37’s get the Rubicon or truss or replace the stock axle on a sport.
"Off roading" is a very wide topic. Back in the 90s when I started off roading we had fun just treading lightly on trails, hitting mud holes and climbing steep grades. Over the years its seems the definition of off road has become climbing boulders. So your right you dont need a rubicon to have fun. Esp with the newer tech on these JL's.
Are you guys in Sacramento?
I am seriously looking to use just 4.88 on the gas models exclusively. Not a believer in mini van motor & gearing.
the electronic sway bar diss connect only works in 4low, didn't know that so guy has manual disconnect as well. I don't mind manual quick flip start of day& put it back at the end of the day. I God will only make Rubicon models & only 4 doors, in Bronze , silver & gold +special order Platinum but it may not b what passes for Rubicon current level NOW. What u need & not what u don't deal esp Bronze level.
We love our 2001 TJ Jeep Wrangler...part of the fun is building. Well, I’m learning to do repairs but it’s just one more reason for us to bond! Hey, what better way to bond then working on a Jeep!? I’d love to get my own Rubicon for crawling but I’m afraid it would create fighting. Lol.

You're right, part of the fun IS building, but to each their own. Who wouldn't want best of both worlds? 😁
The electronic sway bar disconnect works in 4H and 4L. 4.88 gears are way better than 5.13 for 37 inch tires.
Am I able to to upgrade axles & add front/rear lockers on a sport???

Thanks for sharing.... way more informative than seeing the Rubicon vids. Been considering a Wrangler Unlimited but wasn't sure if I can get by with the Sport S until after seeing your videos. I was concerned about not having lockers but your vids are proof you can get by without them for everything but the extreme. The Sport S is all the Jeep most people need.
You can add a lunchbox style locker or weld the rear and front end. But then you end up with a full posi in the rear.
love our jeep wrangler unlimited sport so far
I feel like with the Sport, a lift, and decent tires - I would be the limiting factor way more often than the car.
The disconnects work in 4 high on the new Rubicons. The Rubicon is great if you want to have a better offroader and have a factory warranty covered.
If your bank account only allows adding one locker I say put it in the front...and consider a regear while ur at it if u are pushing bigger tires (37s and up) Since the back has a LSD..
The beauty of a jeep is you can buy the cheapest model and take your time with upgrades
Hey currently looking at shops for a similar Teraflex suspension kit, but with adjustable arms. Did you guys do the ST3 yourself or any shops in Socal you recommend?
The sport s looks cooler for sure, that Aftermarket angry grille looks silly
I got a jk sport s n I love it…jeep on brothers .. I don’t rock crawl so I don’t need lockers..
I am not rock crawing, but I want that as my base product level, I can if I need or want to, or next person wants to. Baja & overlanding for Me 10 to 1 rock or mud. Speaking of mud east coast 4 by 4 ing is miles harder than Utah. So u never touched on if in normal muddy dirty unimproved east coast type conditions & u want every thing u can get in mud.

I have a TJ, and I put a 44 in the rear with 4:56 RP, E locker, and a loc Right in the 30 up front. 2 inch lift with 33s. It does everything I need it to do. The vehicle I would love to have is an 05-06 TJ Rubicon. I’m not particularly fond of the newer jeeps. Too much electronics, and just too big and heavy for my taste.
Are there any trails you can’t go on with a sport?

Depends, everyone forgets how important the driver’s ability actually is. This is a great video and I caught it because I’m planning one myself (but probably called in defense of the Rubicon... I still remember when my jeep club used to rag on me with the built not bought line 😂... I started with sports and SEs tho). The Rubicon is going to allow you to save yourself when you make a bad decision. Additionally, open diffs require so much more throttle but it’s just two sides of the same coin... pick your poison, fast and loud (open) or slow and calm (locked). My recent KL in ft collins video shows my wrangler get stuck open, but then I flipped the lockers on and just crawled out. That was puss poor driving tho... I think. I try to do most of the stuff I do without being locked.

Yes . lockers truly make night and day difference requires a lot left skinny pedal and less effort. But you can absolutely build a sport better than a Rubicon the Rubicon is a half-assed Dana 44 for a lot of extra money.

I put a Rock joxk 44 in the front of my sport when the Detroit locker and I'm running at Torsen LSD in the rear 488 gears in Chrome Molly shafts. Always there always works no buttons no switch has nothing to turn off or off no electric lines no Airlines

The cool thing is.. for $200 you can buy a tazer JL.. lock the rear in 2wd, front in 4hi, and unlock the swaybar anywhere up to 30mph. THAT is why I got the Rubi.
Need? Neither. A Sport can easily be ridiculously capable offroad though. Fab your own anti-sway bar disconnects. Install a winch. Go wheeling. If you want to get more serious, install lunchbox lockers for cheap. Maybe throw on some siped 33" mudders/hybrids. 4:1 Low and 4.10s aren't needed, but even things like that or better are offered from aftermarket vendors.
Whichever one doesn't have angry eyes is automatically better than ones that do. It's also better for the trail to be in 4wd. Slippage beats up the trail for no reason. Perhaps it's my Australian experience screaming at me about this because the government there has closed trails to the public because they get too beat up by people plowing through trying to "save" their tcase. Bigger tires are FAR harder on your gears and tcase than actually using them does, fyi. Bigger tires on stock sport gears is a sure way to roast them quicker. Also it is much harder on your transmission.

THANK YOU, much APPRECIATED.
NOW your sport has thousands of dollars worth of upgrades. I get that is route alot of ppl hve gone in the past. Get new & warranty & upgrade as u go. For these ppl hving every jeep come down the line same quality prts mass produced means. Lots of cheap quality prts out there for ppl looking to stay stock on the cheap. Most ppl will still drive a bit till time to replace then still up grade but crazy type will take brand new prts off & upgrade. Ppl car & tons of prts supply.
A Sport Jeep 30000 some a Rubicon 40000 some, both cost a good coin. So Sport or Rubicon can do advanced rocks, but extremely you need something built.
Add a Hemi a. total of $15k
Get rid of the angry eyes grill and the jeep would look awesome.
