Jeep Rebuild 2: CJ-5 Gets a new (old) frame
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I found a better frame and some springs for the 1956 heap of a Jeep we pulled out of the woods. It's the military version- the M38A1. It had some issues I had to repair on it, but should make a reasonable platform for rebuilding the CJ5 on it's journey to being converted to an electric vehicle.

I promise I'll still mostly make stuff out of rusty junk and not just buy shiny things with your money.

Just remembered why I subscribed. First video I saw, don't remember how I happened upon it, but you made the statement "The name of this channel is Jeremy Makes Things not Jeremy Buys Things From McMaster". You have not disappointed me!! Keep up the good work. p.s. I've been working on old Jeeps for most of my 77 years on planet Earth.
I can't believe you're really doing it and I feel a little sorry for you after getting a glimpse at what lies ahead. Please don't get burned out on this! :)
Hello Jeremy, Great that you now have the chassis & springs done a great foundation to build upon... enjoyable viewing, thank you. Take care. Paul,,
I bought a 1976 CJ-7. When I got it home I power washed the entire jeep. The frame looked great, it was all undercoated till I hit it with my power washer and blasted right through it. It had rusted from the inside out leaving only the undercoating which was easily blasted away. Luckily down in south New Jersey a guy called Sam the jeep man (rip) had a great 1986 frame for me along with a gas tank and power steering box and an amazing dash pad, that's where the reconstruction began. Then came the new springs and hours and hours of work and a fiberglass body, tons of rewiring and rebuilding the 304 V-8 and quadra trac auto transmission. since then I put 64,000 miles on it and wheeled it every chance I got, Paragon and Raush in P.A. many times and many other places. only rolled it once. I LOVE the flip back soft top where it opens just above the driver. Saves time from having to drop the whole top just to drive to and from work. Can't trust leaving it wide open. I do feel his pain, been there done that. slightly insane 4 wheelers..
Wow, as a bodyman of 28yrs, that is a LOT of work. Your ambitious 👍🙂
If you continue with this type refurbishing efforts, I am in. Starting from the basic frame and working up will provide you with a solid Jeep that you will absolutely love and deserve and equally be proud of... Thumbs Up!
I have a 66 CJ5 sitting in my front yard waiting for the snows to melt so I can start my frame off this coming spring. I feel your pain.
I love old Jeeps. Keep up the good work!!!
Love this style of video. Please make more!
This series is going to be awesome!
Nice to see this level of restoration, instead of bolting on aftermarket junk. FYI I worked for a leaf spring manufacturer, it was standard practice to peen the threads on the end of the center bolt after tourqing.
Great job rebuilding the frame and leaf springs!💯
I’ll be up for spofest. I hope we cross paths, and see the jeep! All cool and fun to watch
Enjoy watching you work!
Gunna be a great project Jeremy! Cheers from West Australia
I’m new to your channel and it’s great to see your “Make do and mend” approach to renovating the old classics 👍👍💕🕊️🇬🇧
Whoa! You seem to have a handle on the technical aspects of your project! Go for it!
Keep up the good work, it will be good to see the old girl back on the road.
I am glad to hear you're going to keep working on the rebuild of the jeep. I wanted to let you know that at the end of the day, after all is said and done, you're going to have a true jeep with interchangeable parts. I have had a 59 willys, and now a 1995 YJ, my dad has had a 1970 CJ5 and a 1985 CJ 5 my brother had a Jeep CJ 7 set up for Moab and now days. My YJ, we are having problems finding parts for because Jeep sold out to FIAT. In my opinion is crap the new jeep are high-priced junk. The footprint is way too wide for a mountain vehicle. I hear that the TJ parts are also becoming harder to find. But the after-market CJ parts are abundant. I am currently redoing my YJ for the second time. The dashboard cluster is either getting old CJ gauges or new electronics clusters. The brain box has no after-market or is no longer supported by Jeep. The steering column was a rebuild from NY that was hard to find. So I am faced with basically slowly switching everything over to after-market parts of the CJ .the rear axle and transmission were just rebuilt. Sorry for the long story, but do not think you're the only one . Keep up the hard work, and you're going to have something better than what is new. Most people just have a jeep as a grocery getter .
Great progress Jeremy, and I'm not just talking about the beard. Good idea to start a patreon. I hope you get plenty more people signing up. Keep up the good work 👍
Very instructive and decent photography ❤
Great videos. Had a couple of CJs in the 70s.
this is going to be so fun to watch
I'm cheering for you and Geoffrey:) Cheers buddy
Looking good so far friend!
Looking good so far.
Jeremy! This Jeep save is epic!!! Just found your channel. Awesome content. Now I need to get back into my TDI Commando
Nice job!! Keep going. You got this.
I think the advice about not lubricating leaf springs ("because the friction helps damp them") is probably leftover from an era when shock absorbers either weren't standard fitment, or were barely up to the job and needed every bit of help they could get. These days, it's probably less of an issue. Things have changed a bit in the nearly 70 years since that jeep was built, and it was hardly state of the art cutting-edge technology back then!
Love your opening comment...this will be a great project
Excelente trabajo estás haciendo te felicito !!!!!!
Cool channel its cool when people fix old things n not just part them out
I did the save thing to a 51 dodge m37 keep it up doing a good job
I think this is a great project. And it's almost finished. Well... Over here we're not alowed to weld or drill in chassis. If it's bent or too much rust, it's "game over".
Good content man. We’ll done.
Regarding the springs, you should not have painted them, but lubed them as you did, altho with ind.grease... My experience shows that if you are going to disassemble them to the point to which you have and clean them up, you should take a brush, brush on some thick industrial chain grease, assemble them, and spray them down with more industrial grease from a spray can... Those hold up for around a year in the open, are immune to salt, water and other shit... Every 9 months, bend down, respray them and voila, you have springs that work better, as they have the full ability to move against eachother while springing, and they will remain rust free forever essentially, if you re-apply the grease annually or like most normal people, once a year... Bike chain grease is great, and so is forklift chain grease...
Sure man - make knives from that stuff - good stuff in this series!
Loved watching this channel because im a fan of Jeep and so awesome to find this channel of restoring vintage Jeep. Thanks Jeremy. I will share this tomy social media accounts and network of friends. From Philippines, the Jeep country🥰
Good editing.
Keep on trucking!
Good luck
You're gonna have a lot of love in this venture (i.e., blood, sweat, tears, cash), but you have a diamond in the rough. Good luck.
Yes, knife makers love old leaf springs
You could make a drift or two out of the springs that might be strong enough to get the collet Chuck out of the mill...
Can’t wait to see this finished, I grew up around Jeeps, my dad was an AMC employee. I have owned 3 Jeeps. Looking to get a JK now to build up?
Aaah screw it. Patreon: Joined.
You're a stud
It's not weird. You got it B]
I learned to drive in a m38-A1
I might stick around a bit longer - like WRG comment below I've been messing with Jeeps for a lot of my 77 years - almost finished my latest one now.
I Don't Like Insults But Does Make A Good Summer Time Toy
Wow ..where are the last parte that restoration??
You need a sandblaster? Are you going to make one? Those videos are always really fun. *Edit: oh later in the video you have one. Well cabin sandblaster video would still be fun. Maybe one that is a cabin blaster but the hose system is detachable so you can take it out and use out of cabin?
Proper weld doesn't require plating
you are so cool
Hi what is the maximum lifespan of this chsie paint?👍🏽

I’m not sure, but with as hard as it is once it cures, it should last quite a while.
Have you used that chassis saver before?

I haven’t, but the reviews seem pretty decent.
So what will happen to the Jeep’s old motor? Wish it could be put to use although it’s probably a little ole thing

Right now, it’s sitting in my driveway next to the body. I’ve listed it for sale a few places, but so far no one has come to get it. It’s a tough sell for a questionably rebuildable motor that’s not especially rare.

Hmmm…must be new here… That gave me quite the laugh!

If you found the car in the woods how do you claim it and get papers for it like the titles and stuff so it can be legit yours

The state I’m in doesn’t require a title for vehicles made before 1999, only a Bill of Sale. So the friend who gave it to (it’s been on his property since he bought the property 20 years ago) me writes out a bill of sale that says he sold it to me for $1, and I can use that to register it.
“The Army said not to lubricate leaf springs”. I am here to tell you, 28 years in the Army, other than aircraft and tanks, I would not listen to a single word on maintenance, or in the army known as PMCS
Was with yah till I heard electric

On the patreon, consider having a $1 tier. I pay for YT premium so I think you should get some cut of that and I like to spread my monthly YT patreon budget (way more than Netflix) among as many creators as I can. Might not make sense for your channel though? One of my new favorite channels regardless.
Electric.thanks for telling me you making it into electric that when I stop watching ypur video.
Devolver essa máquina para o asfalto
If they think an old jeep is too far gone, has never owned one
Sorry Jeremy, I'm one of those retirees living on cat food so I cannot help financially, but if you need some delicious recipes for fancy feast, and I will supply my usual emotional support. Are you frigging crazy, you'll never finish that POS, great Vid though.

Yeah, you could just buy a jeep and possibly for less money, but the acquired knowledge and experience cannot be purchased.
excellent vid thanks
It if your going electric….. Plus I stopped video when you repeated going electric 💩
