I love the downhill assent assist. Especially on very steep rocky hills when off road here in Arizona.
I just discovered you,and I own a 2016 Rubicon since 2016 and did not know that,I am a truck driver,we call this function a Jake brake.
Awesome that you and your wife have your own jeeps

Thanks, the adventures have been better since we each drive our own.
The problem with the electronic map is if you have a battery problem so a paper map could be handy.
You forgot to demonstrate how you could actually change the speed by manually shifting the automatic transmission Those speeds are as follows JK Gear Approximate HDC Set Speed 1st 1 mph 2nd 2.5 mph 3rd 4 mph 4th 5.5 mph DRIVE 7.5 mph REVERSE 1 mph JL Gear Approximate HDC Set Speed 1st 0.6 mph 2nd 1.2 mph 3rd 1.8 mph 4th 2.5 mph 5th 3.1 mph 6th 3.7 mph 7th 4.3 mph 8th 5.0 mph DRIVE 0.6 mph REVERSE 0.6 mph
I still use paper maps as well as my electronics. Good video.

Same here. Electronic mapping systems are great but I always keep paper back ups. You never know.
This is awesome vid. Thank you. Learned lots. Have gone on my first trail until 2 weeks. Excited.

I find on really steep downhills It's easier to manually shift into 1st gear while in 4L. Saves the brakes.

I agree 💯 I'm pretty new on off-road only 3 years experience, last week went out with 9 other new broncos on a trail in Santa Clarita CA and I definitely experience putting my JL in 4LO then on manual 1st gear it's amazing, I was like why is it that all the broncos are pressing brake & I'm not, it really helps don't have to press 🐤 😂😂 we love our jeep🔥👌.
After using the DH assist for downhill, do you push the button again then stay in 4L or shift 4H for uphill? thanks
@DefiantJeep
Жыл бұрын
Hi Ronald, thank you for the valuable question. My routine is to push the button to turn it off when you have made it down the hill. You can stay in 4L if that is what the terrain demands, but if the road looks smooth, put it back in 4H.
I have used this and it was amazing. Sadly, my ABS controller module is broken and no replacement has been available for a year and a half. Apparently, they can only be made in China!

Glad to hear that the Downhill worked well for you. Sorry to hear of the auto parts shortage and delay. Looks like everything comes from China. I ordered a SmittyBilt hood for my jeep and it took 6 months to arrive.
How is this different from using Manual shift and gently applying brakes when required?
@DefiantJeep
Жыл бұрын
Hi @tangoreal9098, the difference is that the DHA is computer controlled vs the Manual Shift and applying the brakes is exactly that, manually controlled.
Did you de-activate the assist once you reached the bottom? Can you climb with it activated?
@DefiantJeep
Жыл бұрын
I am not sure what the manufacturers parameters are on this but if the hills are next to each other (one after another) I just leave it engaged. This is me knowing that I will be doing UPS and DOWNS one after another. If there is a distance between hills or climbing, then I would disengage it.
Does the downhill assist work the same way with a manual trans?
@DefiantJeep
Жыл бұрын
I am not sure if a manually transmission Jeep would have a down hill assist or if it is an option. If it does, then I would say yes it would work the same just leave the Jeep in 1st gear. If it does not have the down hill assist, I would say just keep the Jeep in 1st gear and ride the brakes.

@@DefiantJeep I have a manual 2018 JKU and it does have the down hill assist button. I thought it would function the same. I would like to not have to hold the brakes so much with the pedal. Will be nice if it works the same way. I’ll have to try it next time I’m out on a good down hill.
What’s the recommended air down??
@DefiantJeep
Жыл бұрын
This is an excellent question. Thank you for asking. When I take a group out to a trail the general air down is 15psi. I run 10 ply tires so I take mine down to 12psi.
Nothing wrong with using analog equipment. In fact, it’s more dependable than any digital equipment I know. I was on a Land Navigation course with a Captain one day who couldn’t get his GPS to work. I pulled out my map and compass and he literally said… “What are you gonna do with that?” My smartass immediately looked at him and said… “I’m gonna get us there.” 🇺🇸

Nothing wrong with analog at all. Today's generation is so bent on having tech when all you really need is a map, a compass, and some skill to use both.
Gotta love manual transmissions. No need for downhill assist
@DefiantJeep
Жыл бұрын
That's right. Keep it in first gear and ride the brakes.
Downhill is one word in the title.
ya an wat happens when you lose your tech you use a map an a compasss duh
If you can't drive without pushing buttons you shouldn't be on the trail. Onix is an awesome app.
is it normal to hear some clacking noises from the drive train as weight shifts back and forth downhill with the assist on ?
@DefiantJeep

I would say "NO", I do not remember hearing any sort of noises as I went down hill slowly.
We all test down hill decent without pressing the brakes. But in a real situation let the down hill decent assist you. Never! Take! Your! Foot! Off! The! Brakes! Going! Down! Hill! It’s a feature to assist you. He should make that clear before someone gets hurt… never go down a hill without your foot on the brakes.

Hi poke777890, thank you for your comment. It is very sound advise. We will pass the word to keep your foot on the brakes.
@poke777890

We all learn from watching videos, this video is not good advice with all do respect. Down hill decent is a feature you press going downhill and hope you never have to use it, Example… I seen a video with a off-rode Jeep going downhill without using this feature and hit a pothole and his foot came off the brakes then he hit another pothole and couldn’t find the brakes, he started gaining speed as his Jeep was bouncing around. He flipped it because he lost control because of gravity… downhill assist would have kept him good until he could’ve regained control. Downhill assist is like a seatbelt. Something you activate and hope you never use it. But it’s there for emergency’s .. even if the driver had a heart attack going down a hill, it might get you to the bottom safely.
Who else thinks the JK looks better than the JL? The soft top JK especially looks better.

I've had my JK since it was new. It is a 2017. My wife has the JL and after purchase it was exciting to have a second Jeep but without sounding bias, I love my JK soft top more than her JL hard top
