Brad, to clear things up a bit...there is essentially only one transfer case that is built for rugged off-road duty, and that's the one with low range or the MP3023 This is a 2 speed unit with a 2:72 low range. It's standard equipment on QuadraTrac II & QuadraDrive II vehicles. The difference between these two systems is that QuadraDrive has an ELSD. The ELSD can transfer torque on the rear axel side to side in essence it acts like a posi rear. All WK2's with a 2 speed transfer case come standard with the Select Terrain system which is a piggy back system onto the standard BLD or Brake Lock Differential system that all WK2's come with, even those with QuadraTrac I. QuadraTrac I is NOT available with SelecTerrain and do NOT come from the factory with a Trail Rated Badge. In order for a vehicle to have a Trail Rated Badge from the factory is must have either optioned Off-Road Adventure I or II. OffRoad Adventure I is now called All Weather Trail Rated Package. OffRoadII gets you QuadraLift & QuadraDriveII. I'm on my 2nd ownership of a Laredo with OffRoad I or the newer AllWeather Trail Rated Package, which by the way are coil spring Jeeps. I chose the coils because of reliability and better wheel travel. All Trail Rated badged WK2's come with front tow hooks, skid plates,2 speed t-case ,full size spare & a rear tow hook. If you opt for a tow package the rear tow hook gets deleted. Jeep has dumbed down and limited the All Weather Trail Rated Package only now availiable on the Laredo trim. That's a shame because it was a great value. I do some light wheeling & primarily use my Jeep for overlanding and I keep up with my buddies lifted & locked Pro4x Xterra & TacomaTRDPro no problem. QuadraTracII is a really good system .Low & slow will win every time, and the crawl ratio on V6 WK2's is better than in HEMI equipped vehicles With a 3:45 rear gear ratio and 4:71 first gear with a 2:72 low range transfer case you get a crawl ratio of 44:1. That's better that a whole lot of SUV's & pick ups out there. The WK2 is NOT a rock crawler but it can do some amazing things Cheers!

Great video, love these comparison clips you're doing. One thing, you can replace your quadra-lift system to coils, after they fail. Not straight forward, but done plenty. Also, there's a nice video by this Australian guy, comparing front lock to back lock to both. Turns out, a front locking capability is better to a back one, according to his findings, but you can also see that in your video, you could have used a front lock. Nice color combo, BTW, blue and yellow 😄

The Quadra Drive II ELSD is a very fast-acting device that allows little spin before locking the diff. It is superior to the earlier WK georotor mechanical clutch pack. All 4x4 vehicles with any type of Traction Control require vigorous use of the throttle to engage the control, and require vehicle in motion to become effective. Traction Control works poorly on stationary vehicles - you need forward motion for the computer to determine braking effect on the spinning wheels. A more aggressive throttle brings easier results and more grip. Air suspension allows variable height for offroad, while normal height for everyday driving. A great advantage. Thanks.

Great comparison Brad - exactly what people should see when making a decision between a QTII and a QDII equipped WK2. You can see the tremendous advantage the simple addition of the rear ELSD gives your Jeep over your companion’s vehicle, with nearly all obstacles. Now imagine if you had an ELSD in the front too! I had a 2005 WK 5.7 Limited with QDII, and I now have a 2015 WK2 Summit Ecodiesel with the newer QDII. While my latest rig is a superior vehicle as a daily driver and is quite capable off-road as your videos all demonstrate, my old WK with 2 sets of ELSD was definitely the better off road vehicle, even though it lacked the adjustable height air suspension of the new vehicle. It crawled over most obstacles like a tank, without any wheel spin from the front wheels. I also hope that someday Jeep brings back the front ELSD. The current QDII system should really be called QD1.5 - In my opinion Jeep misled people by calling both generations of drive system QDII. If you ever get an opportunity to compare the two different QDII systems, I’d love to see it!

WK2 w/ ELSD is absolutely worth it. If I could not have gotten Quadra-Drive II on my 2015 WK2, then I would have bought the 4Runner w/ rear locker instead. All in, WK2 w/ ELSD and Quadralift is a much better "total OEM package" for most off road situations than a stock Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro. The Jeep has better ground clearance and (for me at least) better control off road (or perhaps it's just what I am more used to using when maneuvering through difficult trails in the woods?).

Most excellent real-world demonstration. I just bought a 2016 4x4 with 33K mi., and this gave me a great understanding of the QT2 capabilities. I don't have the urge for rock climbing in a vehicle I just paid 25K for, but this was still one of the best visuals I've seen. I might run into slippery or icy though, and I'd like to know the absolute best all-season tires to get next? I believe I can also max. up to 275-55-20's. Yeah, I know... 18's are better off-road, but I liked the Overland-style 20" rim upgrade it came with...

Just a tip for quadra trac 2 owners change your brake fluid professionaly by removing your wheels and completely bleeding the system. It accumulates humidity and in my case my rear axle was not even "brake locking" up until I bleeded my system

Hi, thanks for the great video. I'm off-roading with QT2 for 2 years. as you said, the QT2 will work, you just have to know how to drive with it. I think that the QD2 has one down side - you are not controlling the locker (the ELSD is almost a locker), sometimes the result of using a locker is that the rear of the WK2 would slip aside ( I saw this in one of your videos as well), and thins might be dangerous.

I have a WK with QD2 5.7hemi front and rear ELSD that actually fully lock along with a locking Transfer Case all at 4L. So you have a triple lock at 4L in a GC WK QD2. I was wondering if WK2’s QD2 have a front ELSD as well as a rear ELSD that fully lock at 4L like the WK’s QD2? Or WK2’s QD2 is only a rear ELSD that doesn’t fully lock at 4L? Thanks

Im confident on any type of terrain or approaching various obstacles. I have owned the first and second generations Grand Cherokees (ZJ and WJ) also a TJ Wrangler and my current third gen WK is the most capable. Jeep needs to bring back the WK’s QD2 back to the next Grand Cherokee platform.

The QuadraTrac system sounds like a dog burying a bone. Too funny! Given the nature of a Jeep, I’m surprised that the limited slip rear diff isn’t offered as a stand-alone option. As can be seen in this demo, the LSD greatly enhances the vehicles capability. In a Jeep, you shouldn’t have to buy a lot of useless crap just to get the LSD. It’s just a money-grab.

absolutely correct. It's a money grab. Even though QT2 is an option on Laredo it's almost impossible to find one on a lot. They want to upsell you to Limited or higher. I wound up ordering a Laredo with QT2 and none of the BS I didn't want to pay for. I would have liked the LSD but not even an option on Laredo. I just had to wait a couple of months for delivery. I do mostly snow and beach driving and QT2 is good enough.

Thanks for trying to layout Jeep's complicated 4x4 systems. It's too bad the QuadraDrive II system doesn't included front LSD. Also, none of the GC systems include locking diffs. I think 4 low may lock the transfer case, but not 4 hi, correct me if I'm wrong. Also, Jeep is vague about the torque distribution defaults, front to rear. For Laredo and SRT, which are AWD systems, they say Laredo defaults to 50-50% and SRT defaults to a rear biased 40-60 or 35-65%. But for most GCs with QuadraTrac II & QuadraDrive II, we don't know. And we don't know how much torque can be adjusted front to rear in given situations. Wish some one could find this out.

It's uses the speed sensor data. One wheel is spinning because it's in the air, the other is on the ground. You have open diffs, what now? The ecu pulls the brake on the spinning tire, power is then sent to the other wheel because that sides being held. You can see the issue with the system, it's slow, and it can really only function in pulses since you don't want a brake applied while your attempting to move forward. The only place the system is better is onroad. It's inferior as it's a bandaid solution. I have a patriot, it isn't an off-road vehicle, it's like for a little trail with no massive potholes, but that's true with most independent suspension vehicles. They fix these yet? I seem to remember all sorts of customer complaints in the last 8 years with these cherokees. Also anyone have a commander? Do you like it?

After the WJ they dropped the front limited slip in the WK's...which is now just a rear elsd and trickery with the traction control/stability control/ABS systems to apply brakes on the front wheels to help transfer power....have to remember to the WKs are now independent suspension so your articulation isn't as good as a WJ either. So you will find that you have tires in the air more often with the WK's VS a WJ or a ZJ.

Keep in mind the quadra-trac 2 and quadra-drive 2 both use the same transfer case, the only difference between the 2 4WD systems is the quadra-drive 2 has a rear elsd. Also, these 4wd systems are rear wheel drive based, unlike the old 249 transfer case which had a torque bias towards the rear but was in 4WD all the time, power to the front axle was continuous, these current systems apply power to the rear wheels until traction loss is detected then it will variably send power up front. In low range however, this is a part time 50/50 torque split front to rear as a normal part time 4WD transfer case would be...in all other modes its mostly rear wheel drive based, certain modes however change the transfer case outputs to allow for more constant front axle torque being applied.
