Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 Challenge - CRD vs HEMI - Part 2

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Part 2 - WH Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD vs HEMI, 3.0L V6 turbo-diesel OM642 versus 5.7L V8 petrol. This video was filmed at Menai New South Wales Australia and is the second installment of this series. For those that haven't seen Part 1, here's the link to it: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nK5nrcirgZS6hM4.html or you can click on this video at the ending screen after watching this video.
This trail is rated as medium difficulty.
Here's a little bit about the vehicles, they're both equipped with factory QD2 system, which incorporates the centre diff lock, as well as the front and rear, made by Eaton specifically for Jeep Grand Cherokee WH models (or WK in the US). The HEMI sports a 545RFE transmission and 3.73 diff gears. The CRD is equipped with NAG1 transmission and 3.55 diff gears. Both running a 4" Superlift lift kit, somewhat modified.
Both are running 33 inch tyres. The CRD is running 33x12.5R17 Atturo Trail Blade on +10 offset rims and the HEMI is running 285/70R17 Buckshot XMT Mudder with 1.5" spacers. So both end up with similar total offset.

Great Video. Excellent examples of driving off road. Good to see people that don't flog the crap out of their 4x4s unnecessarily and drive at good speed, following good lines. Yes the CRD had tyre issues; but overall, as far as the CRD Vs Hemi goes; I think they were pretty evenly matched off road. Both had capable drivers and both didn't need to be over-revved to achieve their goals. Yes, the Hemi sounds awesome, but the CRD is no slouch, as most diesels have proven. I'll call it a tie based on the capability of both vehicles including ride height/clearance and torque being up to and achieving the challenge. Once again, good to see some respect for the vehicle without doing damage.

The CRD since this video has the front Saguaro bumper with a winch, custom rear bumper with recovery points, separately wired front and rear locking diffs via switches, Nissan Patrol trailing arms bushings, rear coil retainers, removable mud flaps. Another awesome video. What did the drivers think about the downhill trip? Was there a difference? I loved the spotter saying "Slowly, slowly." I thought I had clicked the wrong sort of video. Did you fix that solenoid connection properly. The Hemi driver just looked a bit shifty. (jokes) And seriously? I think 'tracks' is a bit of a stretch. The only difference between the bush and these 'tracks' is a lack of trees. (left hand down.. Ohhh $hit!)

Love the run out audio snippets on these filums. So, we never really decided which was best of the two did we? The CRD has "shit" tyres (hahaha!), but seemed to work most of the time in spite of that. The HEMI sounds amazing, and seemed more "relaxed" about the stuff it was pointed at. So for me, HEMI win.. They are side fix flares and have a lip for the screws. We then put black selastic over the screw heads so they're not visible. Here's a link of the flares: www.ebay.com.au/itm/274315584792

i think those cars look great, no bullshit hanging off them, just a lift and tyres. i had a wj crd with a front locker, rear lsd and 32" tyres, the thing looked like a street car but was really capable. i'd take the diesel any day just for the fuel bill.

Yes, LSD's that lock up 100%. We've modded the CRD with manual switches inside the cab rather than relying on the ECU, so it's heaps fun now. You can try unlocked, front or rear locked (one at a time) and twin locked. So much better than having the factory ECU do the thing.
