We have the trailhawk also, when you loosen the oil filter the oil runs down on top of the skid plate. I punch a hole in the middle of oil filter with a center punch to allow the filter to drain and avoid this.
great video .one thing i like to let it drain as long as you too ;but i got a major tip for you that you didn't think of i guess. take off the oil filter first .take off the oil pan drain plug second .third take off the oil fill cap . yes you might need a larger or two buckets to catch all the oil BUT! with all the "holes" open it creates a better flow to empty out even more oil. same idea as having the vent cap in a gas can or tank .

Yeah I had a little bit of time so I wasn’t concerned with making it drain as fast as possible and I didn’t have another drain pan. I should have taken the oil full cap off first, though.
Thanks so much! Followed step by step as a first time changing my own oil. (2018 Jeep Compass latitude). Maybe bc I have non-trailhawk version, but oil plug and oil filter were located FRONT passenger side, not rear passenger side. Locating and loosening the oil plug and filter was half the battle 😅 Thanks Again!
thank you.. im learning to do more things on my own since I am a single mom with no help. I'll definitely teach my daughter if all goes well lol

Good on you! Id say the key things are making sure the filter and drain plug are tight, making sure the new filter doesn’t get double gasketed, and making sure to fill the engine with proper amount of oil. Just make sure to check everything over before start up and you’ll be fine!

@ TonyTheTruckGuy You became pretty popular with that video you made my friend. Everyone has their own little tips and tricks and I was taught back in the old school days to do filter 1st & Oil pan drain 2nd. I thought they were nuts at first, however actually saves you if you accidentally drop the filter because there's no oil in the drain pan to splash back on you. As as long as you do it properly and tighten everything up properly I guess it doesn't really matter. I tried the trick of punching a hole in the filter and never had luck with that. However an empty plastic beverage cup does work well. Food for thought & keep safe out there My friend.👏👏👏💪💪💪

Yeah the punching a hole thing never worked for me either. Just keeps dripping all day and makes a mess lol. The cup method you mentioned, or a plastic grocery bag seem to be the best I’ve found unless you’re willing to just accept fate like I did 😂 Thanks for watching!

Thanks for this amazing video well done all the info. I need to know you great 👍
I like to put a piece of cardboard big enough under the oil pan so if there's any spills it will land on the cardboard and I also have a roll of paper ready to clean it up of I have too.
One thing I do with my Trail hawk oil change Punch a small hole at bottom of the Oil filter let it drain that way save the mess ;)

Great video! Only filters I go with are Wix, Purolator or Bosch (which is basically a rebranded Purolator) for European cars I only use Mann, Mahle or Hengst. Great video nonetheless!

Hey man love the video. I know it's a bit of an old video now, but it helped answer all my questions for when I do mine. One question did pop up in the middle 😅 just curious why not remove the skid plate? I'm assuming it would be a pain to do but I still wanted to ask.
@TonyTheTruckGuy
Жыл бұрын
Hey! Glad I could help! Just 1 reason really and that’s because it wasn’t necessary for me. If I was struggling to get the filter off or on, or didn’t want to deal with any oil hitting the skid plate, then I would have pulled it, but it just wasn’t necessary for me.
My guy, thanks for the video. It helped a shit ton! I swear whoever did the last oil change on my rig super glued that mfing filter on. Had to pull the screwdriver method to get it cracked lol. Im doing the 60k maintenance and wanted to know what brands for everything required you'd recommend? N was wondering if you knew if it's necessary to change all ignition coils when changing the plugs
@TonyTheTruckGuy
3 ай бұрын
Glad I could help! I wouldn’t do coils unless you’re having misfire issues. As far as oils go, I would just stick with the factory recommended 0w-20 and make sure you’re getting a good quality synthetic oil. I like Pennzoil, Amsoil, Valvoline, Schell, etc. Filters I always go OEM or WIX.
About to do mine. Fucking awesome bro thank you!

Good video. I don't understand your logic in bringing engine up to operating temperature before checking and adding additional to proper level. All that is required is that the engine oil pressure is up to normal limits.

30 ft lbs on the drain plug, and for the filter I recommend hand tight plus an additional 1/2 to full turn with a strap wrench if you have one.

What filter wrench do you recommend? I didn't see one listed in description.
@TonyTheTruckGuy
Жыл бұрын
I can’t remember the exact filter dimensions, I just recommend a strap style filter wrench that pivots. They’re typically found at your auto parts store by the filters anyways.

Hello, I have a Jeep Compass 2018. When I bought it, it was new. I see that it consumes a lot of oil, it does not even reach 5,000 miles and it no longer has oil. Sometimes it tells me it changed oil and sometimes it does not and I have to carry an extra bottle of oil. What can I do? my friend
@TonyTheTruckGuy
Жыл бұрын
It’s either burning the oil or leaking it out if you can’t even go 5,000 miles without adding any. Any leaks will need to be fixed and if there’s no leaks, then the engine is worn out and needs rebuild or replace.
@Tyrodpettie

There is a class action lawsuit on Jeep Compass for having faulty engines that burn through oil. Mine does the same.

@TonyTheTruckGuy

It’s a love-hate relationship. If you’re just cruising at 60 you can get 30ish. Problem is you have to wring it’s neck to merge onto the highway, etc which takes more gas, so it only averages low 20’s with some city driving.
