Jeep Cherokee XJ Instrument Dash Cluster Bulb Upgrade To LED

Parts lists and sponsors in description:
This video assumes you know how to remove the pieces that hold the instrument cluster in place. From that point we show how to remove and replace the stock incandescent light bulbs(h-5 socket w/#73 bulbs) and replace them with LED blue bulbs and new sockets. This would be considered a difficult task except Jeep made the Cherokee XJ simple to disassemble and work on these vehicles. If you have any questions about what we did or would like us to make a video of how to disassemble the dash please let us know in the comments.

    I would think that it would be a simple matter of supplying 12volts to the instrument cluster and checking that the various bulbs are working before reinstalling it. Has anyone tried doing that? And, if so, how did you connect a battery to it?

Any info would be awesome p.s. I've just spent a hour or two watching videos and your is the only one I found that was simple to understand informative and didn't want half the video telling me about your life story !!!!!!

    Glad you enjoyed the videos. I will try my best to help but electrical problems always get complicated. I suggest get a chiltons or haynes manual the one that has the wiring diagrams in the back. That will help you trace any wires if there is a short. It sounds like from what you described you have a short in the switch for your lights or you have the wrong amp fuse in the block. You may also want a test light or a continuity tester once you know where the wires go to see if you have a break in the wires some place. The example i give often is the wires in the door break a lot on these because they get moved and pinched often. Killing the window switches. The head light switches do go bad sometimes but that should have killed the headlights too. I see you have another comment too, i just haven't gotten that far yet.

    Nice I joked for years that my check engine must have burned out, well it did. The 01 failed emissions yesterday. I wouldn't have taken it in if I knew the light was on. So the state may force it off the road.

    You can't correct whatever the issue is and retest? These can pass where i am at and we have strict rules for emissions. Plus the motor has 240k on it.

    They give 60 days to fix the problem. I'm sure it can be fixed, just not sure how much it will cost in the end. It threw 5 codes. So it depends on how many dollars I want to part with. @@SKPcars

    The stock bulbs are clear incandescent lights. I think there is 1 or 2 with amber covers over them. They look yellow on the panel because of the age of the lenses and the type of bulb. My leds are all blue and look purple because of the yellowing.

    If I want to get the Full Time bulb. Do I get a green bulb or is it already painted green in the cluster?

  • @SKPcars

    @SKPcars

    None of the bulbs are colored from oem. They are all white bulbs, a few have caps to change the color. I don't remember which ones had that. The color you see is on the plate is the bulb shines through. If you change the color of the bulb it will change the color depending on what it is on. Amber bezel and blue bulb equals kind of green color. Most of my bulbs look kind of purple because of the frost color over the bezel, i put in all blue leds. I hope that helps.

    I’m having an issue where I replaced the bulbs with LED’s like you did. I installed the cluster back in but one side doesn’t light up at all and the other on does. So I swapped the LED’s from one side to the other and now the side that wasn’t lit up is now lit but the side that was lit in the beginning is now not lighting up. I ordered some new LED’s thinking maybe I just got bad LED’s. Still the same thing. Wondering if the lamp check could help? Cluster was lighting up just fine with the stock bulbs before I replaced them.

    I don't have a great answer without looking at it. I can help troubleshoot though. First i believe the led's are directional you might have to flip them in the black socket part. I had a few not light up right away and that was the issue. Also the part that the socket touches is what completes th circuit for the bulb. If that silver part is worn off it won't light up. Make sure the silver touches the metal part when locked in. I woul guess it is probably the led bulb being backwards though. If that isn't it let me know and i will keep trying to help

  • @SKPcars

    T5 is the size of the socket. The leds just have to fit into a T5 base. They will often sell them together on the sites that sell them. If you mean power output, I don't know what it is.

    Possibly 1 of 2 problems. The twist locks aren't making contact with the metal on the board they twist into or the LEDs only work in one direction. You could try flipping them in the twist locks and see if they light up. Less likely, you could have blowns a fuse, especially if the power was on when the dash panel came out. Hopefully that helps.

    If the gauges look the same the back should be the same. The same bulbs would fit. I believe the earlier ones take a different bulb. Later models should be the same. It only takes a few mins to pull off the cluster. It might be worth the time to inspect before buying bulbs.
