Jeep 4.0 LITER Crankcase Vent Problems. CJ, YJ, XJ, ZJ, WJ, TJ, 4.2, 4.0, 2.5 6cyl / 4cyl

If you are getting oil blown into your intake tract, air filter box, or onto your air filter, check the integrity of the Continuous Crankcase Vent System. There are two ports on the valve cover. One brings in fresh air, and the other is a metered orifice that connects to the intake manifold to provide vacuum.

I stand corrected. The 4.2 had a PCV system. The fuel injected engines used a CCV system.

Either way ( CCV or PCV) they do the same thing. It’s not that big of a deal… well, until you get to the parts counter and the guy tapping on the keys can’t find the part because he’s looking for PCV valve. Part names do matter, but these two do essentially the same thing. 🤙 But I got another one for ya 😁 Is it a distribution block or a proportioning valve! 😄

Good explanation, I just changed mine 2 days ago. When I purchased it I asked for a PCV and wasn’t corrected so up until 2 days ago that’s what I thought I was working with. I had only bought one so after realizing there was 2 and having to cut the first one out as you mentioned I went for the hunt online for the second one. I come to find out they are sold in pairs and it’s called a CCV, I then researched CCV! Here I was thinking all I was doing was a valve cover gasket job and now I’m thinking this is the reason valve cover gaskets prematurely fail on these. I do believe changing the CCV helped with a smoother idle as well, I do not believe mine was completely clogged as I don’t have oil on the filter but it was dang close! Now onto throttle body cleaning and new injectors………have a good day!

Cool! You just answered several questions. Thanks man, now, also, on the back side of my air filter housing there are two nipples side by side. On my manifold there are two there too. 🤧 I noticed there were no hoses hooked up. There were only nubs from the old hoses. I plugged off the nubs on the manifold. The other two are still open. There seems to be a lot of oil pressure pushing the air out of that opening where the plug is. Vapor is coming out all the openings. The rubber on the front and back plugs is like you said. I gotta replace those. I can’t believe that’s all it is but then there’s that vacuum you mentioned and maybe that’s it. Oh well thanks man. I love this motor. 🤧🙄

215k miles now 340k miles yea I should have done that with the head gasket Best thing I learned was overheating fix. Don’t delete or use cooler thermostat. Use OEM about 195 thermostat. It didn’t make sense to me, but it keeps the coolant in the radiator long enough to actually cool down instead of circulating, hot coolant. I had overheating after water pump and head gasket replacement. Added fan shroud that brought I down 10 degrees. The right thermostat at the right temp solved overheating for good You would think a 165 opening at a lower temp would mean it runs cooler. That’s not true at all. Coolant needs to be cooled to have a cooling effect. Otherwise it just keeps everything hot. Let it sit in your radiator long enough to cool down ;-)

Hey man. I just thought I'd provide a little bit of information that I'm gained from my research back. A few years ago, my brother had a rear main seal leak in his jeep xj and we're like man. We don't wanna we don't wanna do the rear main seal... So I did a lot of research and came across the fact that the rear CCV orifice. Is typically too small. A diameter and the inline 6 gets high case pressure, which leads to oil being pushed out the rear main seal. So what I did? What we did is we put a big fat like half inch line coming out of that back orifice CCV. And it' stopped leaking. , so I'm just sharing that with you alright? Thank you.

Have a `91 Jeep Cherokee Laredo 4.0HO. Replaced valve cover gasket that had seepage with a Fel-Pro VS50522T gasket from Rock Auto. Valve train is clean as a whistle. Use Castrol 20W-50 conventional oil. Now oil is leaking what looks to be front oil pan timing cover area. Engine has got some miles but doesn`t smoke. Don`t know if any blow-by but didn`t notice any oil in tubes that connected to front and rear valves on top of valve cover. Was wondering if there is any pressure build up in the crankcase that caused seepage but now you got a new gasket on there and oil is leaking at front oil pan timing cover area. Not going to change to the black late 90s valve cover. Don`t look as solid as the early 90s. Can try blasting some air thru those valves if you think it will help.

Nice one my friend, I just came by this video looking for info about the location of the oil catch can. I have the 4.0 TJ and was wondering where to put it. There's lot's of video's on YT and what strikes me is the following. There is a port on top of the valve cover in the front and one in the back (like you showed) Both go to the intake manifold. The front one goes via the throttle body into the intake manifold, the back one goes directly to the intake manifold. I've seen both the front and rear ports being used to place the catch can. My question is, if I understand this video correctly, that I have to put the catch can between the front port and the point where the hose goes into the (hard plastic) air filter tube, is that correct?

ALL combustion engines will get some combustion blow by into the oil...dirty oil will smell a little gassy, question is how much is too much...do a compression check on your engine

@Super-B cylinder 1 is a little low but nothing that would really raise any flags. I think it couldn't hurt to replace the injectors and see what happens. I was curious of what you thought.

@@Mattmazz77 Probably have an injector sticking open and pumping too much gas on combustion stroke which is leaking down into the sump as the engine is unable to burn it. Check your injectors.
