I love Johnny Depp. He’s an amazing character actor. His partner was French and they lived in France and raised their children there. The children both speak fluent French, so I’d assume Johnny speaks French adequately for the role or he wouldn’t have been cast, correct?

Was just about to comment the same) It is a bit hypocritical coming from someone, who had never managed (well, yet) to learn French past the basics, but the man has spent so much time in France and raising a family with a French woman (which you can argue is way more immersive than any training course), how do you not pick up the language? Even footballers (ok, not all, but many) pick up the languages of the countries they come to playn in.

Did they study any 18th-century portraiture! She was said to look like a china doll, which was part of Du Barry's appeal! The girl playing Marie Antoinette would've been a better casting choice! I guess the director didn't care? I heard this was a vanity project for her?

Agree 100%! The real historical Jeanne du Barry clearly had a very 18th century type of prettiness: porcelain complexion, big blue eyes, neat, small, feminine features. This lassie is “jolie-laide”, to put it politely! Big, toothy mouth, wiggly profile, slightly squinty eyes and boyish physique… all just look so wrong for the period and it’s hard to believe in the character.

Looks like an interesting interpretation but I'm skeptical of the two leads. Louis was said to be "the handsomest man at his court" and Jeanne was blonde and blue eyed and round faced if one goes by her portraits. Depp is more like Dracula and Maiwenn hawkish. Jeanne had big shoes to fill after Madam Pompadour who even after the sexual relationship with Louis still was a close friend and adviser. Louis fluctuated at times of illness with religious guilt and per protocol sent mistresses away. Was it Louis xviii who did it or Louis for the sake of his soul. Thank you for your review. ❤

How fascinating! I know nothing about Jeanne du Barry. So interesting how she even got to court to become Louis XV’s mistress. So tragic that she was executed by the extremist revolutionaries during the Reign of Terror. I am interested in watching the movie and reading more about her. Thank you, Dr. Paranque!

Maiwenn sadly looks nothing like the actual Jeanne and is far too old. I haven't watched the movie yet but I probably will, since the french court is my epertise. I really wonder if they show her downfall and execution. I also need to know how they portray Zamore. They said if everyone would have behaved like Jeanne on their way to the Guillotine, less people would have died that way.

they do not show Jeanne's downfall and execution. They just show her being taken away from Versailles and landing in another convent. No mention of what happens to her in the end. And Jeanne did not behave with dignity on her way to the guillotine. She wailed and struggled and begged the executioner for her life. .

Johnny Depp's ex is French singer Vanessa Paradis and it's said he does speak fluent French with his children by her. Maïwenn like Asia Argento who played Jeanne du Barry in Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette looked too old for the part. Worse the 2006 film made her so ill tempered when the historical Jeanne was actually well mannered and good natured.

The actress looks like the lead singer from Aerosmith. She could of done a music video “Dude looks like a lady.” This modern Hollywood movie interpretation of Madame Du Barry would probably make her ghost turn in her grave. Thank goodness they won’t do a remake of Désirée Claure Bernadotte, French Queen of Sweden. The 1950’s version with Marlon Brando is a very well made version.

OMG, you look just like Madame Jeanne du Barry - the resemblance is astonishing - just like on the portrait - amazing 💖I think the actress in the movie does not resemble the real Du Barry at all. And her mouth is too huge! Big mouths were considered ugly back in that time. I just learnt about that from the channel of "Merveilles En Papier". Laetitia talks a lot about that time and the ladies of it. She is a paper artist, sculpting figures like Marie Antoinette, or fairy tale characters, preferably the ones written by Madame d'Aulnoy.

SPOILER ALERTS I have to admit, from the moment Johnny Depp makes that first smirk, they have my attention. And as she rises, they've drawn me in, and I am very much looking forward to seeing it!! She wrote, directed, and therefore, got the main part, so that is unfortunately going to get many comments. Maybe that is why they departed from the traditional? Du Barry was literally plucked out of the gutter and raised to Maîtresse en Titre! Incroyable! And she didn't seem very embarrassed about it! BUT... DID she have many ties around Europe by then? Probably! She WAS spending too much time in England as she was trying to sort out the (rest of the) money from the jewelry she buried in the back yard (which I always found a little greedy.). And she DID smuggle jewels and money back and forth in her effort to do so! I agree, if you want the King you must be bold! But I would think she was more cunning and clever than an intellectual or even intelligent. In addition to rising to her position, she got her title, her maison, her jewels, etc, etc... But I disagree that she didn't have the King wrapped around her finger! She was good at that! She managed to weasel her way out of situations she didn't want to be in (apart from Madame La Guillotine). And save becoming Queen, what more could one have achieved? And even after, she lived a life most would long for (et pas seule!!). Similarly to Anne Boleyn, she understood people, and above all, men, and her affect on them. Jeanne was able to use her feminine wiles to take advantage of that in any situation! Whereas due to Anne's time spent at Court in France, she had a very different education than du Barry did as she came up in the world. If one can't read and write well in at least their mother tongue (could du Barry?), read music, play an instrument, etc, you must use what you've got! Bah, voilà ! On verra! Mais moi? J'imagine qu'il serait au moins, très intéressant! 😅

I am very excited for this!! Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette is one of my favorite films since I was in high school. That film too doesn't get much praise. However I feel like she captured the image of the court of Versailles being similar to the punk rock moment of the late 70's and 80's, with its elaborate fashion sense, and hardcore parties, and the politics that came from that moment. I think johnny fit's the part of louis the 15th, he still fit's that bad boy image of his earlier days in his career. Which the real louis as you know was a huge playboy, and by the time Du Barry came into his life, he wasn't in the best of shape, and she made him feel alive, and young again

I haven't seen the film, but judging from the snippets and pictures hared online, it has an obvious casting problem: the two lead roles, Du Barry herself and Louis XV, are played by actors clearly selected for marketing appeal (Depp) or vanity (Marwen) purposes. Cinematography wise, the movie seems good: lighting, costumes, sets. I cannot comment on the script, as I haven't seen the film, but the marketing / vanity aspect of the casting for the leads combined with beautiful scenery leads me to worry that the whole project might have favoured looks/superficial appeal over substance.

i consider myself a history addict and have read quite a few books on Jeanna Dubarry. Let alone all the historical mistakes in the movie but WHY could they not find a better cast than this rather haggered dark haired actress ??? Memoirs and portraits of the 18th century clearly describe Jeanne Dubarry as angelic despite her naughtiness with blond hair blue eyes and flawless skin right up to the end . Its a shame that producers have to have it their own way just to please themselfes

If find it very weird we can't see this movie, outside of France. No one cares when Catherine of Aragon, who was actually very tiny and petite, blond blue eyed, pale skinned with reddish golden hair, is always repeatedly portrayed as an olive skinned dark haired Spaniard, like she's in a Spaghetti Western, by any drama made that is funded by American money. It would be very interesting if you could present the evidence that you researched about Louis VXV, what was he like then, contrary, to how Johnny Depp played him? Who else has actually played him that you thought was truer to the real life King then?

This movie grows on you. I really liked the movie. The actors were all great!..Depp playing this king at the end of his life and reign was good casting because a formerly gorgeous Depp is now older, less appealing, more tired, depressed, worn out and sick of life (post Amber Heard), much like the king was at this time in his life when he met Jeanne!! This makes their relationship quite believable because it is like now when a tired, sad, older married man falls hard for a lovely young woman. I would have liked to see more love scenes between the two. In the end, Jeanne now loved the king more than he loved her, which sounds like real life! On the whole, the movie was gorgeously filmed, wonderfully acted and the costumes were beautiful and realistic. The movie is worth watching, but I think mostly women will like it.

IDK. We have the same Y chromosome as the Bourbons of France, and from the small sample size of men in my family, he does look quite a bit like us. Sadly, he does not have grey blue eyes, but other than that he fits the role relatively well in my opinion. Ever since the sun king, the French monarchs were ahead of their times and also quite quirky people.

Another great video, Dr Parenque. I appreciate your thoughts about it and I agree with you. Your humour was superb on the Spice Girls as I grew up listening to them lol. According to French especialist on historical costumes, director of Temps d'élégance, she remarked that costumes and hairstyles were a total disaster (pretty grotesque and burlesque, her words), also pointed out that the film was more about Maïwenn herself than Jeanne du Barry who was supposed to portray a historical figure, she mentioned that her acting with Johnny Depp wasn't smooth on backstage as there were lots of rudeness, shouting and arguments between them. Anyway, historical productions are always to be taken carefully for historical accuracy as their main focus is to entertain and not to educate the public. Merci beaucoup pour votre travail extraordinaire 🙏

Great video, again! I agree with you in many ways. I also find the scene kind of weird where Jeanne's meeting King Louis XV and he's looking at her and bites his lip. 😂 I think they could've made the clothing a bit more historical accurate, more flamboyant, with more details you know? I also hope they show's us her intellect, (intelligence like you said) who she was, her personality. The scene where some of Louis XV. courtiers, (his sisters i guess) are critcising him for Jeanne du Barry is very interesting, i've read about it a little bit and i know they formed themselfs to a opposition at court against Jeanne, in particular against Louis XV. behaviour for having mistresses which were not born into aristocracy, basically of low birth and i know even Marie-Antoinette get's involved to this later, right? I'm really excited to see all this.

I saw the movie. When Jeanne comes in wearing the white dress, she already knows the king and has been sleeping with him. this ceremony is her being presented to the court as the Countess Du Barry and as his official mistress. And as for Depp's "smirk", the trailer cuts off how much he was straight up chuckling and smiling at her seconds before. And the scene where you see her running up the stairs , she is running because she is HAPPY and she is running to see the king to tell him that the Dauphine finally addressed her. The fact that the narrator says "vous etes en danger, madame". has nothing to do with that scene. When those words are spoken, it is because the King is dying and he is telling her that the tide will be changing for her and that she should prepare for it.
