That was so disrespectful by LVMH to discontinue Jean Patou’s Joy. I first learned of this perfume from Sam at my world of fragrance last year so I purchased a 10ml travel size of it. It wasn’t love at first sniff but I learned to appreciate & enjoy it. I recently subscribed to you a few days ago watching your review on Chanel Cristalle video. You’re amazing.

You are absolutely poetic. I love listening to your reviews to understand more about fragrance, but also because I enjoy the artistic way you describe fragrances. Sometimes I like to own a perfume for the history and legend, even if I'm afraid to wear it. ❤

Love this review! I'm in Spain, and the region I'm in is full of jasmine. Spanish jasmine is actually jasminum grandiflorum, and I love to pluck the flowers and let them scent my pockets . This summer I plucked a bunch of flowers that almost certainly hadn't recently blossomed and forgot about them for about a week, and when I finally realized it my bag smelled as if it had been left soaking in cat urine. I do get a small waft of those indoles in the fresh flowers when I stick my nose into them and get a similar reaction to the one you describe here, almost as if I'm going to get an allergic reaction, but there's something about it I find so irresistible. I've never smelled Joy, but this review has certainly more than piqued my interested. Thank you so much Dacob!

So Dacob, answering your question about Joy and the male users (I’m sorry if it gets too long 🙈) My version is the EDP, produced by SA Designer Parfums (as well as yours), with batch code 3148. I'm a 23 years old guy and my favorite type of fragrances are the floral and floral-aldehyde, especially those that contain rose and iris (but I'm not a big fan of white florals, especially those that are full of tuberose). To have a base of my taste, my favorite fragrances are N°5 (EDT, EDP, Parfum), N°22 (EDT), L'Heure Bleue (EDP), Shalimar EDP, Chloé (EDP), Love Chloé . On me, Joy is purely floral, a 100% “vegetal composition” (which smells “natural”, so to speak) The top notes on me are VERY pungent, sharp, the kind that makes your nose inflate, but is fleeting. On my skin, it blooms in a beautiful white and carnal jasmine, but never dirty or disgusting. Along with the jasmine, I also notice a rose that, in my view, reminds me of a dry, dehydrated rose, as if it had been kept between the pages of a book, but which still exudes its perfume. The base notes are slightly powdery, slightly soapy, but nothing to much. I can't notice the indolic, fecal nuance on me... I think my skin (miraculously) “swallows” that nuance, leaving me only with the good part. Joy is the ONLY white floral and jasmine fragrance I can wear, as the others give me a headache. I also love it because is no sugar, and I loathe sweet/fruity/bubblegum-like fragrances. The curious thing is that I receive compliments when I wear it! I once wore it for my internship, and my boss said I smelled like lilies and he said he loved lilies because his mother used to cultivate it on her garden. Others commented that it was a different kind of smell, but very nice and pleasing, which surprises me a lot because in Brazil, the perfumes that are successful are the sweet ones, loaded with vanilla or fruits, including the masculine ones that follow the One Million and 212 VIP trend.

Wow it is amazing how differently everyone perceives fragrances. To me this opens green, and then turns into a soapy, clean , vintage smell. Not meaning anything bad in vintage, just that it smells like something you would have smelled ages ago, not a scent you would find on the market now. I often wear this when I am looking for a clean non offensive office scent. Thanks for the video, it reminded me that I have it in my collection! Wearing it as my SOTD because of you!

I love your descriptions of the perfumes. I don’t think anyone on KZread does a better job of getting into the chemistry and the feelings/memories associated with the fragrance. I have had a bottle of Joy since the early 90s. I liked it in the early 90s, but something happened to me as I matured, and I can’t stand a white flower forward fragrance on myself any more. I like it when I first put it on, but then I get nausea and a headache a few minutes later. 😩

I haven’t smelled it in years. But now as I am a grown up woman, you have made me want to explore it again to see what my mother saw in this fragrance that she thought was so special. I know exactly where I can buy one. Thank you 🙏

Joy (the original) has the unfortunate effect of smelling much too strong and even off-putting in the bottle, but absolutely marvelous when it's being worn and the wearer's skin chemistry joins in the effect. It also lasts forever--the bottle I purchased 20 years ago is still great and you really need only the smallest possible dab of the stuff to last all evening. I'm a fan. My mother, who also loved it, used to say that when she wore it people were warmer and friendlier towards her, as if they were drawn to it.

Yes, but I have to be honest, it's been YEARS since I worked in Chicago in fragrances (almost 11 years now) so I've ONLY got the pure parfum to experience.. Obviously I used to show the edp and edt to a select few customers, but I haven't experienced those concentrations in a long time and, as you know, sometimes the parfum can be more tame than its "eau de" counterparts.. It's INDOLIC for sure, but I suspect less so than the edp... I can decant a bit into a spray for you and send it to you... Email me bjorktaiwan@gmail.com

One of those hidden gems lost in time, have always some. Reformulation LV did of it is to be ignored. Congrats for the video.

Thank you so much dear Very kind of you. JOY is a concept. I think we can love it if we understand it as the representation of JOY that comes after having conquered years of tribulations. That feeling of having gone through much pain to get to the other side. Its a JOY with a memory of pain we had to endure to get to the JOY. It is not an easy and purely simply beautiful scent. It carries the bad tough memories with it but that is why it is so great.

I am speechless with this review. Definitely I can’t think of a better review and tribute to the legend of Joy. Unforgivable in deed knowing how LVMH killed such an important part of our history to give the name to such a new cheap, unoriginal and vulgar perfume. I must admit my granny wore it and I couldn’t stand it on my skin when I was a child. It was repulsive. But on her it was magic, magnificent, dark as a mortal sin and hypnotic like the eyes of a poisonous snake! Her secret? Just one spray and walk through it. That was the only way to keep it wearable without chocking you and everyone around. With a review like yours, who cares about the new Joy? Long live the original Joy! Congratulations for perhaps the best tribute to the former most expensive perfume in the world!

Dacob, thank you so much for this review!! I just purchased a small very old vintage bottle from an online estate sale. I cannot wait to get her!!! Why companies decide to discontinue this epic piece of art is beyond me. Such a beautiful history of what survived the great depression. Last batch ever produced that's super special. Use sparingly!! I cannot imagine Chanel 5 disappearing! That would be catastrophic!! I am also a proud Opium Addict and have vintage juice and pure parfum in my collection. I will cry when I run out. I know I can seek it out and find it but I will still be sad. But back to JOY...I will let you know how my PH mixes with this juice. It sounds like it will be a sultry tease of a scent. I love Joy by Jean Patou! I thought I was the only one ...he he. I must get Joy out and en-joy it again, am slowly trying to get back on track with my perfumes after an odd health moment that lasted too long might I say! Reviews are extremely rare to find on this masterpiece ( and Pete Burns had fabulous eclectic style and taste, so I am not surprised he enjoyed Joy)... I bought a bottle of the edp some 3 years ago , and was at first repelled by it, but then drawn to it, as you just so eloquently decribed in this video. I do smell the poopy hideous smell ( and I am a gal last time I checked), but then the jasmine bowls me over in a good way, but the stinky smell stays with me, but I found that it is a addictive perfume, and there is none other like this one that I have tried. Friends I have given a whiff of it to, keel over in horror and distain, and cannot handle the smell ( and have been quite questionable with their use of adjectives to describe it), and they are actually guys! Maybe they do smell something even more repugnant than I ( as you say). I find it a personal and extemely sensual perfume too. I really appreciate your indepth scientific research, just fabulous. I am so glad to finally see a review of this treasure of a perfume, and am gobsmacked that the review came from you Dacob!! Brilliant xx

OMG, I have a bottle and it was a replacement for one that was replacing the last one. This is a perfume that I'm so shocked to see totally discontinued. The shift from total natural flower fragrance to some synthetics is noticeable in how the notes flow though out the day. The shift was when Proctor and Gamble purchased the perfumes in 2005 (I think, I'm guessing). But the overall general scent remains. It was a fragrance from a neighbor who wore it. I fell in love myself and as all the other fragrances have come and gone, this has lasted well. When you mentioned the human hormones, I suspect that is why it has lasted so well over all ages from young to old. The initial blast is so well described. It takes a while to go, "wow this smells wonderful." As a fashion house, Patou was a game changer in women's active wear. Thank you for the post. And yes I must be mad, I found this channel by searching on Joy Perfume.

I also have a small bottle of Floris Honey Aoud which I believe has a spot of civet somewhere in it so I don't mind animalic /stinky perfumes because they shine in the dry down. Great review BTW - subscribed 🤩

Dacob, do you like 1000? It’s one of my favorite perfumes of all time. I would ♥️ to hear your thoughts about it. I listen to a lot fragrance reviews and I’ve only heard 3 KZreadrs talk about ever.

Great job again, Dacob, even if I am in the 1000 team (my personal issue with tuberose, lol). Patou perfume should have been preserved as the pieces of history they are. LVMH ruins the future of perfume industry. Everything is decreasing in quality. And buyers are undereducated thinking that a Dior Joy or Sauvage are unique scents..... My goodness.... They have no idea what perfume is......

@@SuperDacob Right again and it's my major issue with a lot of brands. Now my reaction is simply stop buying from brands who do not respect or preserve their legacy. They are absolutely free to make money and I know and understand we do no live inside museum or temples dedicated to the glorious past. But... Patou perfumes should have been preserved and sold on line. Lutens never discontinue a scent. But it's another subject. I hope you will have a suitable answer for your bag issue. Very nice funny model for summer.

My perfume since 1983 when I was still living in Paris, after seeing the film "Joy", and listening to the movie's background music by Francois Valery, then later got a light blue teddy custom made by Dior (Paris 8e), gift by my then boy friend, with a bottle of "Joy" de Jean Patou which listed as "le parfum le plus cher du monde"! It carries a sentimental value and my love for Joy who had a similar destiny like myself.

I smelled joy once and it was repelling hahah but I am mad at lvmh discontinuing such a legend for the trashy dior joy. I have this in extrait - a more recent (I think) clear flacon bottle and a sealed vintage in the black bottle with the red cap (that one is adorable!!). I haven't worn it in a few years so now will need to try it again and see if I find those indoles. I recall soapy, floral, vintage and something I couldn't put my finger on...maybe it's that! Recently, I tried Jicky EDT for the first time. It was so beautiful when I sprayed it. A little bit later at my desk I smelled something funky. I smelled my wrist, it was me! 'It smell like a poo poo!', I said in a bad French accent, grimaced, laughed, smelled again, grimaced again, yep...poo! Thankfully that went away after about 20-30 minutes. My first real poopy indole experience! I mean, REAL poopy. :P
