Always keep hope in the forefront! I had a stroke 6 years ago, with partial paralysis on my left side. Progress has been glacial but I recently had occupational therapy which taught me great coping skills. Plus improvement in my hand function. I was primarily a quilter who did lots of handwork--requiring 2 hands. After waiting 1.5 years to try, I have adapted to mostly machine work, but after a lapse of almost 40 years, a very strong desire for handwork of some sort, I picked up cross stitch again, very successfully. I am now able to support my hoop totally with my left hand, have always used only my right to stitch. Plus, I have sewing skills to fully finish my smalls. Don't give up! Thanks for this, Jean! I confess that even when I used to do needlepoint, I didn't know that "tent" was an umbrella term for Continental AND Basketweave. I think the biasing produced by Continental was a major factor in leading me to more interesting pattern stitches. Once I learned basketweave, I tried to use it exclusively in place of Continental. I became so fond of it that I once stitched the background of a piece in Basketweave from the back of the canvas so that the fascinating reverse basket weave pattern showed on the front. I hope you have a great time on your travels, whether they are road trips with a friend, solo, or on your Flosstube at Sea cruise. And I wish you well with your second surgery and rapid healing plus even more inventive adaptations.

Thank you for another informative flosstube. Although I rarely use a half cross stitch, it is good to know the differences between the stitches you demonstrated. I always enjoy learning from you. Your January plans sound wonderful. Girl trips are fun. I’m so sorry you need more surgery on your left hand. As far as needing to improve organization and suffering from procrastination, I’m your twin. Maybe 2024 will be an improvement in those categories.

Hi Jean Thank you for explaining the differences of the "tent" stitch.Your explanation of the three stitches is the best and clearest explanation I have ever heard. I do get very confused on how to do the basketweave stitch and and have tried to find a needlepoint kit that requires it so I can learn how to do it successfully. Hi Jean, I am so glad you explained the differences of the tent stitch!. I don’t stitch on a higher count fabric or have come across a chart that requires this stitch. I so appreciate your thorough information, presented in such a kind, caring, and respectful way. I am picking up cross stitch again, after 40 years. I had also done a small amount of needlepoint in the past, and your explanations have cleared my confusion of the terms used. Thank you. You are learning to adapt with dexterity issues, and I am struggling with seeing the small stitches clearly. Time for me to admit that I am struggling, and purchase a lighed magnifier to assist me in my stitching journey.

This video is so wonderfully timely for me. I bought a kit thinking it was cross stitch because I just saw floss in it. When I opened it, it the fabric is actually a fine canvas and it says to stitch it in continental stitch. I had no idea what that was and now I do!! Thank you so much.

Jean thank you for another great tutorial. I wish you had done the basket weave stitch on needlepoint point canvas so we could see the poles and the steps. I have a small needlepoint project and have held off doing it cause of the warping of the canvas I have had in the past. Have a safe and wonderful cruise and stitchey girlfriend trip. Just came across your videos recently, have lots to catch up on lol. Thanks for your review of tent stitches. I appreciate you clarifying the terminology as I've been hearing both tent and continental used. I did needlepoint a lot in the '70s and was trying to think back on what these two stitches were, or if I'd forgotten one of them. But watching your video showed me that two terms are being used for the one stitch. When I needlepointed, I did a very large Maggie Lane wall hanging using basketweave. The effect on the back really is interesting and looks woven. I think some stitchers are using continental these days because they're stitching over 1 and finding that their thread is slipping under the fabric threads, so not staying where it should be. Hi Jean, sorry to hear of your hand issues I’m a retired surgical RN..I myself have had several surgeries in the past year have more to go my thumb joints are total worn out so had one done have yet to do the other..long painful recovery…I so appreciate seeing your adaptation in hoop I always stitch in the ditch but just couldn’t figure out how using this stand! Great idea and I did think of it ... I'll be in Fort Walton Beach so it's 2 hours each way and I am only at FWB for the afternoon and evening :( so think I have to plan another trip to the Gulf!

Hi Jean. As a full coverage stitcher i think alot of the stitchers are using continental tent in order to avoid the floss slipping under the fabric threads when using half cross.. this is mostly used if they are stitching over one on the finer counts. 25/28/32 etc. the slippage occurs on those stitches where the thread travel on the back goes opposite of the direction of the top fabric thread at the intersection they are stitching. Tension also plays a part in the thread “slipping”. So they are trying to solve the problem by using the continental stitch which does keep that from happening and tension becomes less of an issue for them. Meaning they probably are not as mindful of their tension. Many stitchers where doing just the simple x and who have not expanded their knowledge base into other stitches probably do not understand the execution of the stitch. How the execution of the stitch effects the fabric. Does it cause it to distort for example. Does it create a column line ( which frequently can happen in full coverage stitching). I totally agree with you that education is the key especially since there is more cross over between cross stitch and needlepoint. As you know the stitches can be used in both techniques and basically the only difference is the ground fabric that is used. Fabric vs canvas. Sorry to be so long winded. The other reason the full coverage people like tent stitch is they think it is faster than full cross so they can have a finish sooner. Half cross = half the time personally I don't agree but then I only stitch full cross

I love road trips! I have been sharing the "Stitching Road Trip" Facebook group with friends and members of other FB groups! I also have recommended your floss tube videos for their excellent instructions! It is such a great resource! Praying for you as you undergo surgery again! Do you plan to reissue any of your older books? (Especially the alphabet/border/sampler ones?) I can empathize with your dealing with procrastination. I do procrastinate and it can be very frustrating when I have too many things to do with a time limit! I never knew that mixing stitches in needlepoint was a No-no! 😱I admit that when doing a larger needlepoint with a lot of "background" I have done continental for the 'design portion' that has many color changes but changed to basketweave for the background to keep my canvas straighter. I hope that the needlepoint powers don't get after me for that!😂Thank you again for another great video!

This is the way I learned tent stitch years ago. Lately people have said the half cross leg is not uniform with the last leg of the full cross. so, they are encouraging people to go from top left to bottom right to mirror the last leg of the fukk cross. Your thoughts? THANKS!

Happy New Year and thank you for the great tutorial. I didn't know the distinction between the three tent stitches. Also I didn't known that a tent stitch was only slented to the right. Which brought me a question. When I cross-stitch, the upper leg of my "x" is slented to the left (\). If a cross-stitch project requires tent stitches, for a sky for example, do I still slent the half-stitch on the right if the upper leg of my cross-stitch is slented to the left? If I keep them all in the same direction, slented to the left, how do you call a "half-stitch" slented to the left? Does it exist? Happy New Year! I hope you enjoy your upcoming travel plans. I have a question about white floss. I tend to use primarily DMC floss but hate stitching with white, it never looks good. I avoid so many nice patterns that use a lot of white floss. Do you have a white or slightly off white floss you’d recommend? I would be willing to spend a bit more to get a decent white floss. I know you like Cosmo brand, is there a white floss you like in the Cosmo brand? Thank you!

Cosmo has a nice range of white ... from a snow white to what I call a "antique silk" because it reminds me of the gowns we saw on Downton Abbey! I don't sell individual skeins but I do offer an assortment of all the blacks (Cosmo has 4!) and whites. So, which is most stable? I often wonder if I should do large areas of block stitching as a half cross and then come back for the top stitch in order to make very even stitches. I keep experimenting with different patterns of stitching to determine which yields the most uniformity on the surface. I don’t care if I use more thread.

All three tent stitches are equally stable. When you "come back for the top stitch" you are no longer doing any one of the tent stitches. (LMK if I have misunderstood your question.)

But I have tried a variation of full cross-stitch where my first leg is either a half-cross and stitched English/Danish depending on whether I stitched a full row or a single stitch at a time, or I have tried continental and then crossed, especially when stitching in hand and traveling right to left, or even up and down. I guess I am just wondering about filling a space with half-crosses, and then coming back to make full crosses. I will keep experimenting. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Personally, I would not lay down continental stitches and then cross them to make full X's. I am confused by your question about stability unless you are talking about stitching "over one" on linen.
