Of all the instruments i've seen, or played, this has to be the single most beautiful one. Both the sound and the aesthetics of this unique creation, and the sheer talent needed to master it, are a 'tour de force'.

Lol wow this is amazing, yeah the tempo's a bit inconsistent but who cares he's obviously very talented and I'm sure most people would love to be able to play like that! @bball24ified Tapping or "hammering on" the string with enough force onto a fret is enough to make the string vibrate. Because electric guitars/bass guitars use a magnetic system to monitor the vibration of the strings, they can pick up the sounds accurately. The same effect can be used on acoustic instruments, but is naturally quieter.

I, too, have played the bass this long, and have an understanding for many different types of music. He is using this instrument to fill the role of a guitar and a bass; by two hand tapping. I do the same with 6, 7, and 8-string basses. It has become common to do in many types and genres of music over the past 20 years or so.

I know, he's a badass for both playing the Super Mario Bros theme AND playing a stupendously crazy bass. And I know, the fanboys will be pissed. My apologies. At first I did think it was a Chapman Stick, but I found out that 11 string basses have been around since 2004, but are still pretty rare. Being a guitarist, I have seen 8 string basses, but never an 11 string. It's still a cool instrument!

Looks like a bass guitar custom made by Ken Lawrence, who is perhaps more well known for making Explorer shape guitars for James Hetfield of Metallica. You can check the head stock for the KL logo to confirm.
