We lost a legend when the world lost JD, his banjo sounds like no other and its all down to JD’s picking. JD will be remembered as an innovator of the five string as much as Earl and Don. It has always puzzled me why JD never bought out any instructional videos, Im sure they would have sold tens of thousands of copies even millions. Thanks JD for all the pleasure your music has given me and the billions of others bluegrass lovers in this world. R.I.P. JD, Sadly gone but you will never be forgotten.

I saw JD and this band a number of years ago, they were using a single mic and just tore it up. I asked Ricky how it was singing without those monitors he said " well it makes you sing your ass off, but then again that's what it's all about ain't it?" It's sure good to see the man still doing just that, what a great voice!

this is a good performance. there has been some discussion about jd's best new south band. my personal favorite was jd, rice, douglas, scaggs, and slone but there's nothing wrong with these ole boys. i liked all of the different version of the new south bands. jd knows talent, how to use it and how to share the stage with all the band members. he's a nice man and one of best ever banjo players. if you like bluegrass music, it seems to me that jd and the new south almost has to be among your favorite bg bands but that just one man's opinion and thank goodness there are others. i've been listening to bluegrass music since the late 40's so the list of my favorite bluegrass bands is pretty long. i sure hope bluegrass music never gets too far afield as happened with country music. thanks for this post and all your other many posts. they are greatly appreciated. ken t.

@@packingten I agree. Tony Rice is wonderful, of course. As far as talent, style, or musicianship are concerned I could not think of a single negative thing that I could say about Tony Rice. He was one of the best ever. That said, Ricky Wasson is also a great singer, and for some reason, I think I just prefer the sound of Wasson's voice.

Got my "first" banjo a couple weeks ago. I've noticed how JD has a pretty sharp angle between his forearm and hand as viewed from the front. I've found that this is helpful to produce good tone from the stings picked with the forefinger and middle finger. Nonetheless, Earl didn't seem to do this, so I guess it depends on the individual picker. Noticed in this video how much of a "bow" is formed by JD's hand, keeping his wrist far from the head of the banjo. Very visible at the 3:14 point of the video. I can see where this also would help produce good ring and accuracy in picking the individual strings. Just watching the great JD Crowe to see _"how it's done"_! 8-)

I'd be afraid to injure my wrist playing at such an angle. I know JD didn't experience any issues as far as I know, but it would still leave me slighly worried. I too, got my banjo a few weeks ago! Happy playing.

Do you want to know the secret to their good voice??? Just look at their size, the more you weigh the larger your lungs are, and therefore you have a great voice. and they all look like they aren't into the performance because they are all very tired. just look at those drooping eyes. besides, it is also very dark out.

+bangwhistle69 I know you made your comment 2 years ago but I have to agree. This is not one of JDs better bands in my opinion. Before everybody starts heaping abuse on me let me say I don't think they are bad musicians or anything I just don't feel any passion in this performance. Everyone looks bored and the music seems listless. Maybe just an off night? I think Ricky Wassons voice is better suited to old country music and not the fast paced, high lonesome bluegrass I prefer. Give me Del McCoury or his son Ronnie anyday. Just my opinion folks. Please don't hate me .
