JCH Street Pan 400 - CRISP & CONTRASTY | ROLL REVIEW

JCH Street Pan 400 is a NEW old black and white film that's also a bit of a passion project! This stuff is brought to all the film shooters out there by Japan Camera Hunter, Bellamy Hunt and today I'm taking a look at some shots from a roll of 35mm that I took.

I need to get me 2 or 3 rolls of JCH StreetPan 400 and give it a try! I think this is heaven for the rangefinder street shooter.

My favourite way to use JCH is in 120 format for portraits in the studio. Excellent video, thanks for sharing.

I've shot two rolls of this stuff in 35mm, and two rolls in 120. I think one of the 35mm rolls may have been defective, because it was horribly fogged, had diagonal sprocket shadows across half the roll, and I think it also had significant bulk loading artifacts at the beginning. The second 35mm roll I shot came out perfectly, and I absolutely loved how the images looked. They just have this really nice "punch" to them. Both rolls of 120 that I shot with it came out good, though super bright scenes did wash out and not look so great. However, the film base on 120 is so thin (and the curl of the film is so strong) that its just physically difficult and frustrating to work with. This alone makes me not want to shoot the film in 120, even if I do like how the pictures turn out.

Thanks for the explanation of what this film IS... I actually had been assuming it was just rebadged film from some no name factory. I might give it a try now.

It seems to be very similar to Rollei Retro 400S but maybe with more contrast. Is one of the more expensive in the stores, but can be very interesting for some purposes. I have to try it at least once.

Hey Noah -- quick question -- in your Analog Resurgence title sequence you have a Canon WP-1 "waterproof" 35mm point-and-shoot. How much have you used it, under what circumstances, and how well did you like it????? Thanks!!!

Sadly the WP-1 actually stopped working before I had a chance to put a roll into it! I thought it was okay, but it stopped turning on and I never got to use it...

@@AnalogResurgence -- Well, I have a WP-1 on order, an A-1 on order and will try to win the shopgoodwill.com auction for a third one -- the Prima AS-1 -- but they are all actually the same camera, just with different names depending on the region that they were sold. Hopefully at least one of them works and I can use it in the pool this summer with my daughters.

It's a french guy respooling films in his appartment and he has some pretty funky stuff like russian aerial surveilance film, medical film or sound recording film. I haven't tried them yet but it's on my to do list. Here is a link to his website : filmwashi.com/en/
